That book sounds like a gold mine. I must get it. Meanwhile, could I ask for another lookup? The lineage you cite -- Basil (4), Thomas (3), Charles (2), Thomas (1) -- is unfamiliar to me. Unless I've been misinformed, "my" known LUCASes start with a Robert (about 1630 - 4 May 1740). Then come three Edward Lucases and finally my 4g-grandmother Elizabeth Lucas (first cousin of Robert Lucas and sister of Mary, Mercy, Robert, Susannah, Drusilla, Phoebe, William, et al). How does your Basil/Thomas/etc. line connect to mine? The link must go pretty far back. According to my notes, there was another Lucas-Buckles marriage, too. Susannah Lucas (1773-1883) m. Robert Buckles; children William, John, Joseph, Elizabeth. I can't place Robert Buckles. Susannah looks just the right age to have been the sister of my 4g-grandmother Elizabeth, but I seem to recall that she was really Elizabeth's first cousin, the daughter of William Lucas and Susannah Barnes. Correct? Robert Coontz Waukesha, Wisconsin

    2. Robert Coontz: I looked in the Lucas Family Book by Anabel Kemp and Henderson is on page 104 and matches nicely. Henderson fifth child of Basil and Elizabeth Brashears Lucas, born in Berkeley Co, Va in 1793. Married in that county 12 May 1831 to Maria Buckles b 29 Jly 1803, d Berkeley Co, Va 20 July 1839. She was bur near her parents Abraham and Elizabeth Buckles in Zion Baptist Church Cem, Jefferson Co, W Va. Abraham and Elizabeth had other children, Aaron, Ephraim, Phoebe, Elizabeth Ann, Mary H, and Sarah. I'll dig a little deeper for the item no (2) regarding John (1820) disappearing. Henderson's lineage is...Basel (4), Thomas (3), Charles (2), and Thomas (1). I will be more than happy to search more on specific questions if the answers can be found in Kemps book. 2. Robert J. Coontz, Jr.
    3. All, While digging through some family genealogical papers, I've come across some typed transcripts of family letters written between 1838 and 1872. Two brothers, Aaron and Ephraim Buckles, write back from Ohio and Illinois to family connections living in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties, VA/WV. There is a lot of news about members of the LUCAS family of the Shepherdstown area, who were cousins and former neighbors of the Buckles brothers and of my own Coontz ancestors. Most of the LUCASes mentioned are descendants of Edward Lucas (1738-1809) and Elizabeth Edwards (1745-1808). The letters are fascinating reading and provide a wealth of information about who was where, when. They also raise a lot of questions, which I hope you LUCAS researchers can help to answer: (1) One name that keeps cropping up is Henderson Lucas. Does anybody know who he was? From the letters, I infer that he was born in 1792, give or take a year, and died in 1868. In 1838 he was living at "Sulphur Springs" and farming. (Maybe Henderson was a middle name?) (2) One of the Lucas brothers, named Edward, evidently had nine children: Lewis (1806), Elizabeth (1808), Edward (1811), George (1813), William, Robert Armistead (1815), Benjamin (1817), John (1820), and Charles (1823). The family supported the Confederacy in the Civil War. Charles died in battle at Richmond. Lewis and Edward (the younger) both lost sons. Intriguingly, John disappeared at the beginning of the war "in the company of a lady" and apparently was disowned. A letter dated Januasy 23, 1865, said his name was no longer mentioned in the family. Does anybody know where he went or what became of him? Did he ever come back? John Lucas is a common name, so I'll probably never know, but it would be fascinating to find out. Robert Coontz (5g-grandson of Edward Lucas & Elizabeth Edwards) Waukesha, Wisconsin

    1. [LUCAS-L] Sarah Lucas - 1740/Scotland?
    2. Tiffany G. Bils
    3. Hi - I'm new to the list and have only one LUCAS ancestor - Sarah Lucas who married John Gass/Gess in Albemarle Co. VA in the early 1770s. They eventually moved to Kentucky. They had the following children - John (1774), James, Nancy, Sarah/Sally (1785), Elizabeth and Jemima, Thomas, Susannah, William (1793) and Mary (Polly) GESS. The only further information about Sarah LUCAS was that she was born in Scotland (that from the family bible). Any bells ringing? Tiffany G. 3. This book was reprinted in the late 80s by Higginson Book Co., a company that reprints out-of-print family histories. They regularly advertise in the Genealogical Helper. The book was listed at $75.50 in a 1993 advertisement but was on sale for $53+. It is probably still available and since a large portion of the book concerns your family, it may be worth it to you. 1. [LUCAS-L] Lucas Family
    2. Message for Jenny Oldham - received your message and still unable to get delivery to you in spite of using "respond." Message was returned again. I am glad you found my message. I was attempting to give you some information on Nancy Lucas. She was the daughter of John Lucas, b. abt. 1765, Virginia, d. September 1837, Casey Co., Kentucky. The wife, of John Lucas, was long thought to be "Patsy," but this was a result of errors in reading early court records and is now totally discredited by most researchers. Recent researchers have been leaning toward Sarah Jones and do so with some certainty. John Jones was a neighbor of John & William Lucas in Surry Co., North Carolina, in the 1790 census. John Jones was born about 1740, probably in Virginia, and of Welsh ancestry. He was father of at least two children, and probably more. Two known children were son Michael, who married Sarah Johnson, and daughter Sarah, b. abt. 1765, d. aft. 1820. She is the best bet for the wife of John Lucas. John and Sarah had eleven children: Mary Polly, Hezekiah, Nancy, Willis, William, John, Jr., Jesse, Johnson, Mary Frances, Naoma, and James. John Lucas is a direct ancestor of mine as my mother was a Lucas. My great uncle, Herman F. Lucas, wrote, in his book, "Legends of Casey County," the first record of the Lucas Family in America was of one William Lucas of Cornwall County, England, who sailed to this country in his own supply ship. This trip was reported to have been in January 1625 or 26. I have been unable to locate any information on this William or a date of arrival. Where Herman got this information is any one's guess. I did find several Lucas in Virginia during those early 1600's such as: Richard Lucas, age 16 arrived by ship "Assurance" 1635; Robert Lucas, "Tobacco Viewer" 1639; William and Thomas Lucas, 1654. I have family group sheets, etc. and would be willing to share any information that I have with those who are willing to reciprocate in kind. I hope this information contained here will aid you in furthering your family research. Stay in touch. Richard M.
