    1. [LUCAS-L] Amanda Lucas and Gov. Robert Lucas
    2. John Kessler
    3. Eric, Thank you for the information on Amanda Lucas of Ohio (my greatgrandmother). I only learned her name two months ago. Not one of my aunts knew the names of any of their grandparents. I am astounded and very grateful that there are people out there who take the time to help others. I intend to find a copy of Kemp's book and check with the Ross Co., Ohio Probate Court people again. I am new to digging and this is just so much fun! I think the Amanda Lucas in Kemp's book must be related but can't be my ggm because mine had her children from 1869-1886. You have given me somewhere else to go. Thanks also for the Gov. Lucas information. Maybe I can adopt them. :) Kelly Kessler

    2. It turned out to be only 4 pages of text. I guess it was all the formatting and line spaces that made it originally 7 pages. There will probably be gliches regarding margins, forced line breaks, and other things that will make everything look funny. But with some patience, I think everyone will like it. Eric

    2. LUCAS GENEALOGY Robert Lucas, of Deverall, Longbridge, County of Wilts, England, arrived at the Delaware River, Apr, 4, 1679; his wife Elizabeth & eight children arriving in July, 1680. John eldest son, born Nov. 11, 1654, died unmarried in 1719; & Edward I, second son, & his wife Bridget, had the home plantation. Giles & Robert II, other sons, were cattle dealers in 1684 in Bucks Co. One authority says Elizabeth, daughter of Robert I, mar. in 1692 Nath Goforth of Phila. & another, says her husband was Nath Poole to whom she was mar. at Middletown, Pa. monthly meeting (Quaker) Sept. 23, 1682. Thos. Bailey of Bristol, Eng. in 1682, settled in Bucks Co. that year, & soon after, became the husband of Mary, dau. of Robt. I, mar. date not given. Robt. II, above mentioned, mar. at Burlington (N.J.) monthly meet. June 17, 1703 Eliz. Scott. John Lucas, eldest son of Robt. the immigrant bequeathed property to his sister Rebecca, and "cozin" (meaning niece) Mary Poole, for which reasin I am convinced that his sister Eliz. married Nath Poole rather than Nath Goforth. Robert Lucas II removed from Bucks Co., Pa. to Burlington Co., N.J. & settled in Willingboro Twp. & is found as a witness to the will of Abraham Henlin (?) also of W.boro dated June 17, 1722. He was married at Burlington monthly meeting June 17, 1763, to Eliz. Scott & among the witnessed to their wedding were his brothers John, Edward & Giles, & sisters Mary Lucas & Eliz. Poole, & Bridged, the wife of his bro. Edw. The following advertisement, concerning this same Robt. II, son of Robt. I the immigrant, appears in the Pa. Gazette for Nov. 14-21, 1730: "These are to give notice that Robt. Lucas of Willingboro Twp., in the Co. of Burlington, is desirous next spring, with the Leave of the Province of W.N. Jersey & Pa. to keep and maintain a Ferry truly at his Landing within less than 1/4 miles of the place where the Ferry has been held heretofore. Upon the Terms, Ferriage for Man & Horse, ninepence, for Single Persons fourpence, a Gillof rum for threepence, & extraordinarily good Pasturage for Horses & Cattle upon Reasonable Terms. If there will be encouragement for him, he design to cut a Road from the Red House to the House adjoining, to the great Road, next to Leonard Van Grift's plantation, which is supposed to be 1 1/2 miles nearer." Robert III or Jr. son of preceding mar. Rebecca Fenimore, at Burlington, May 18, 1730; & in Dec. 1730 he "rises in monthly meet. & condemns his outgoing in marriage." At the mar. of Hannah, sister of Robt. III mar. at Burlington Oct. 18, 1729, to John Gibbs there were present Robt. Wdw. (uncles) & Robt. Jr., Benjamin, Eliz. & Margaret Lucas, 2 bros, & 2 sisters. Giles Lucas, son of Robt. the immigrant, was living in Bucks Co., in 1694, at the time of the settlement of Thos. Lambert's estate. In the wills of John Scott, of Willingboro, & Martin Scott of Evesham, both probated in 1702, legacies were devised of the former, to Bridget Scott Lucas, & her dau. Mary; & by the latter to his bro-in-law, Edw. Lucas I. (Note: For many years it has been supposed that Edw. Lucas I had a son Edw. who was the father of the Edw. who migrated to Va. in the 1730's, but such has been proven to be erroneous. But the Edw. who migrated was the son of Edw. I, hence Edw. Lucas II.) Edw. Lucas I, supervisor of Falls Twp. for 1730, died ante 1740, & is described in his will as "of Falls Twp." His wife Bridget & son John were appointed executors: JOHN to have the home plantation; to the son Robt. the land lying between Wm. Paxon & wodow Darkes (formerly Edw's bro. John's). Other legacies were bequeathed to his son Sam'l., his abro. Giles, his 5 dau's. Ann, Eliz, Mercy, Mary & Margaret, & to bro-in-law Thos. Bagley. John Lucas, oldest son of Edw. I mar. Aug. 27, 1730, Isabel Hayworth. He lived in Falls Twp. Both he & his wife died within a few days of each other, he, however being the first. Both wills were probated Aug. 25, 1748. In John's will a clause devises to his "antient mother, what was left her by father's will." John's bro. Rob't. "to have the plantation after his mother's death, & bro. Edw. to have plantation where bro. Rob't lives.

    2. Well folks, I figured there would be some problems sending everyone this text file directly. But I didn't realize that my AOL server would compress the text file that I attached from my Macintosh computer. Many people do not have every decompressor know on the market. I surely don't. So I think I'm going to have to cut and paste the file in the body of the e-mail that I send to the rootsweb server. So.... I will cut and paste the whole 9 yards and see if it comes through OK. It's only 7 pages, so maybe I can break it up into 4 parts so it doesn't overload everybodies e-mail servers. Wish me luck. To those that were not able to read when I sent to them directly, let me know if it comes through. Eric A. Johnson Anaheim, CA varnivarni@aol.com

    2. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --part0_899516993_boundary Content-ID: <0_899516993@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII To those I have corresponded with regarding the Robert Lucas Governor line and those who think they are related to the Robert Lucas Governor line: First, I'm not in the habit of attaching files to rootsweb.com sites. Sometimes it may not be friendly with everyone's e-mail servers, computers, and word processors. However, I think this copy of a paper I obtained many years ago could be very valuable to all researching the Governor's lineage. I don't remember who I received it from, so I can't recognize them and give them credit. But the paper was written by (Mrs. C.F.) Lillian Hayes Fisher, date and place unknown. Maybe someone out there recognizes this person. I think it came from the Indiana Library that holds a large Genealogy section. This is Part 1 of what I was hoping will be three. The second part is a copy of an entry of a book called "Our Family" Lucas, Brown, Patterson, by Helen P. Booth. I am entering that into the computer now and will send a copy when finished. It pushes the Governor family back to England to 1525. There is some overlapping with the first paper which makes me feel good. The third part is a family group sheet that I still can't find! It listed the siblings of the Governor, which as I remember, had dates, places, marriages, etc. This first part was copied into a Macintosh computer using Microsoft Word v6.0.1. I then saved it as a TEXT file, hoping it will be friendly with most word processors. I'm not sure about e-mail attachments and how they encode attached files. But if anyone has a problem detaching their files and bringing them up on their computers let me know what they are and I will try to straighten them out. The reason I didn't copy and paste this into the body of this e-mail is that it takes up about 7 sheets. Typically, Windows 95 and NT (what I have at work) have no problems bringing Mac .doc files up. But not everyone has it. Therefore the TEXT file. Bear in mind that this is not a full-blown book that has every person and their spouses and children up to the present. I haven't found such a book. But maybe this is where it starts. For payment in return.......... I have created a chart for the Governor line. I have 88 people directly descended from Robert Lucas first in America. What ever you have on this family I would like to include it with what I've done so far. Please send me your branch via e-mail and maybe we can answere someone else's questions in the future. 1. [LUCAS-L] John LUCAS (1820-93, VA/WV > Clinton Co., IA)
    2. Robert J. Coontz, Jr.
    3. Hi, all. I've long been intrigued by family stories about my first-cousin-five-times-removed John LUCAS of Shepherdstown, VA/WV. At the outbreak of the Civil War he disappeared from home "in the company of some lady" (as an old letter put it) and was never heard from again. Well, I've found him, and I wonder whether anybody else out there can tell me more. In 1870 John was living in Lyons Township, Clinton County, Iowa. The "lady" turns out to have been one Mary Stephens from Pennsylvania, born about 1830 (John was ten years older), and they had children John R. (b. about 1861), Robert E. L. (!) (b. about 1864), Mary S. (b. about 1867), and Charles F. (b. April 1870). I think John himself lived until 1893; don't know about the children. Any descendants out there? I'd love to hear more about this black sheep, who looks as if he may have outlived everybody else in his family and raised a fine family of his own. Robert Coontz Waukesha, Wisconsin P.S. To orient you further, John was the son of Edward (or maybe Edwards) LUCAS (7 Nov 1783 - 1 Sep 1849) and Mary RONEMUS. He had brothers and sisters Lewis (1806-), Elizabeth (1808-1844), Edward (1811-), George (1813-1881), Robert Armistead (1815-1883), Benjamin (1817-1890), and Charles (1823-1864).
