Hello Karen, I am writing in regards to the below Benedict LUCAS. I have a Bennett/Benedict/Benet Lucas (born in 1808) who married Mary McClincie (born in 1819), they had 11 children. Their daughter, Emmeline 'Emma' Caroline Lucas, was my gg grandmother. My records indicate that Emmeline was born in PA on 14 Nov 1854. Unfortunately I do not have any information as to the birth place of her parents. I am wondering because there is only 34 years between the two Benedict's, possible yours may be the father of mine? Dear List: I have finally accumulated enough info on my elusive Lucas' to share. Hope someone out there connects. Here goes: >From the January 11, 1945, Newark, Arkansas Journal. Harvey W. (Wesley) Lucas, 58, died at his home near Mt. Carmel Sunday. He is survived by his wife and seven children, one sister, Mrs. H.C. Overturf of Crawfordsville. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Mack's Chapel cemetery, conducted by Rev. J.M. Hughes (a Methodist preacher) of Newark. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Mayhan-Boultinghouse. Mayhan-Boultinghouse is now Jackson Funeral Home in Newark. Newark is in Independence County Arkansas. Batesville is the County seat. Children of Harvey Lucas and Alma "Bessie" nee Summers Lucas: note-Bessie was his second wife and he was much older than she. All children are still living except those who expired in infancy which I am not listing. Lula Mae Genevie Bonnie Pauline (my mother) Dorothy Bobby Joe Cecil Wayne Lucy Marietta "Dustye" raised as Overturf First wife Hattie ----they had three sons The sons lived with Harvey and Bessie. We assume Hattie died. Jim/James Harvey Tom They all moved to the St Louis area. Harvey's father- ukn Lucas m. Martha Ada Beatty Two children known: Harvey Wesley and Lula Belle Lucas Lula was raised by the Beatty's. We assume her mother died. Can anyone identify my unk Lucas greatgrandfather? I would love to know his name and any other details about him or his wife. I have quite a bit of info on the Beatty line. The Beatty's were prominent in Poinsett County Arkansas from 1883 to appx. 1937. Harvey, Bessie and children were in the Poinsett County area in 1937 when a horrible flood came. The flood destroyed everything. It is said that you could take a boat all the way to Memphis, TN (appx 50 miles). Grandma Bessie always said she "liked to never gathered her children up." They were rescued by boat and seperated. Three children ended up hospitalized. Geannie, Bonnie and Dustye. Dustye ultimately ended up with Carroll and Inez Overturf who raised her in Bakersfield, CA. She was not adopted, she just wasn't returned. If any of this sounds familiar, please write. My mothers birthday is 10-4 and I would like to present her with her family as a gift. She will be 66. Bessie died 3 yrs ago. Sincerely, Alma Luper

This was in our local paper today. www.lasvegassun.com/stories/ In recent years, ailments associated with aging caused James Lucas to lose vision in his left eye and his wife, Anna, to lose vision in her right eye. To compensate for those disabilities, the Las Vegas couple would routinely travel close together so they could get the best possible field of vision and look out for one another. It was that closeness they shared on ill-fated Swissair Flight 111 that has helped their family better cope with Wednesday's tragedy. "Although it is devastation to lose both your mother and father in one accident, our family is comforted because they were together to hold each other's hand as the plane went down and watch out for each other," said Jim Beckett, the couple's son, of Henderson. NV. "They were very dependent on each other and they lived very full lives." James N. Lucas, 72, and Anna B. Lucas, 74, a former ballroom dancing team, were among 229 passengers and crew members killed Wednesday night in the crash of the MD-11 in the Atlantic Ocean seven miles off the Canadian coast. Late Thursday, the airline released the passenger list that included the names of the Lucas's, who were married for 48 years, and 135 other Americans. It is not known, however, whether the bodies of the great grandparents of nine were among those that were recovered from the waters 40 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Services for the Las Vegas residents of 19 years are pending. Interment will be at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV. It was a cruel twist of irony that brought the Lucas's to their destiny. At first, Beckett said, the couple had planned a trip to Israel, but they canceled it in the wake of terrorist bombings of overseas U.S. embassies and the U.S. retaliation against a purported terrorist base in Afghanistan. The Lucas's also had scheduled a previous flight to Switzerland, but were forced to cancel it and wound up being booked on the Swissair plane that took off from New York's Kennedy International Airport Wednesday night. The couple had been world travelers for more than 30 years. James Lucas won their first trip to Europe on the popular television game show "Concentration," during several appearances Feb. 9-12, 1963. Over the years, the Lucas's visited Europe several times, as well as the Caribbean and China, among other exotic lands. "Dad had said that this would be their last trip because they were getting on in years," Beckett, a scientist with the Department of Energy, said. "They were a little apprehensive because of all the Anti-American sentiment, but they were still looking forward to the trip." The Lucas's had planned to meet up with a Florida couple that had taken another flight to Switzerland, Beckett said. Born July 25, 1926, near Charleston, WV, James Lucas was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from the University of Miami Coral Gables, Fla., with and engineering degree and for a while worked for an oil company. He served in the Army during World War 11. Born Ann Brewer on Feb. 26, 1924, in Charleston, Mrs. Lucas developed an early interest in dancing, which she pursued after graduating from high school. The two met in 1949 after they were hired as instructors at a dance school in Coral Gables. "They were friends from the start, but at first they didn't want to dance with each other," Beckett said. "Mom thought dad was too arrogant." But within months the two became a dance team and less than a year after they met, they were married, Beckett said. Over the years, the Lucas's opened several ballroom dancing studios in West Virginia and appeared on the "American Bandstand" TV show during it's Philadelphia heyday. He also managed several nightclubs in the area. While running one such club in the late 1970's, Lucas prepared the house specialty, "Hillbilly Balls"--meatballs in a country gravy--for then-President Jimmy Carter, who later sent him a thank-you note for the meal, Beckett said. The Lucas's moved to Las Vegas in 1979 because the drier climate was recommended for Anna Lucas, who suffered from asthma. In recent years, the couple enjoyed activities ranging from gardening to surfing the Internet on their home computer, Beckett said. In addition to their son and great-grandchildren, the Lucas's are survived by two daughters, Susan Patterson of Las Vegas and Jeanann Folk of Henderson, and six grandchildren. Also, he is survived by three brothers, Charles, Pat, and Evert Lucas.

I am descended from Marsham Albert Lucas and Margaret Richardson. I have lots and lots and lots of information on this family from Thomas back (and Marsham to current, but not much on Thaddeus), including many of his and Sarah's ancestors. If you send me your address, I can send you a quick folder of material with more later (this is the heart of my busiest season of work). Just to wet your appetite, I have lists of the 1850 and 1852 wagon train members and their goods, copies of letters, copies of photographs, etc. Lance Mackey lamackey@sns-access.com Researching the following lines: Paternal: Mackey, Swisegood (Schweissguth) // Glenn, Woods // Warren, Troy, Smith, Welsh // Murphy, Delap // Helmstetler, Waggoner // Mayer, Magdelena, Harmon // Girsius, Augst // Martin, Ottmann, Schaeffer // Lengin, Strohl // Schadlin // Mayher Maternal: Lucas, Kinzer // Lee, Paul // Richardson, Hartman, Compton, Mundorff // Davidson, Young, Casen, Starr, Wolf, Sumpter, Elliott, Amon // Whitman, Murphy, Thompson, Roark, Kelston, Souders, (Mc)Gregory, Schoffner, Prather // Phelps, Brunk, Bridges, Cooke, Griffith, Hammet, Roberts, Reddick, Dowler, Powers, Mayse, Oakes // Guy, Moore, Hodge(s), Greene, Quattlebaum, Fletcher, Dillion // McDonald, Laybourne, Herkandall, Wilson // Marchant
Hi Terry, Welcome to the group. Can you give us a little more info? Do you know what state were they born in or married in? Do you know a year or time frame? Anything to help narrow it down? Hi, All-- My name is Walt BOSWELL and I just subscribed to the LUCAS list in hopes that someone could help me with a particular LUCAS problem. My great, great grandfather, John Anderson BOSWELL (11 Sep 1832-26 Dec1911), married Lucinda Elizabeth LUCAS (3 Feb 1833-28 Feb 1910) somewhere in Georgia. They are both buried in Junction City (Talbot County), GA. Does anyone out there know anything about Lucinda Elizabeth LUCAS. All I have on her is what I mentioned above, except for the fact that she had at least two children--James Evans BOSWELL and John Henry BOSWELL and her husband was wounded at Honey Hill, SC during the Civil War. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Walt Boswell walter.boswell@mci2000.com
I want to thank all of those who have sent me information about making a web page. I have looked over alot of nicely done sites but haven't decided which one to go with yet. Once I do get everything together I will add my Lucas line and maybe connect with some of yours. Again, many thanks for all the help. Lora
