    1. Re: [LUCAS-L] Message from Owner
    2. Terri: I just wanted to add another message to your already very high stack of papers. I also wanted to post my querie again since it's been awhile. My wife's family was from Belmont Co, OH. Her Lucas line is Sarah Ann Lucas b 31 Oct 1818 Belmont Co who m James Hughes b ca 1812/18 PA. Her parents were William Lucas b ca 1794 who m Temperance _______ . This William is number E5 on page 133 of Anabell Kemp's book. The daughter Mathilda who m John Lees listed under them is wrong. Claude Lucas who helped Kemp with the book did some research for me regarding Sarah Ann and found out her siblings and her were put up for guardionship when her father (and maybe mother) died in the Winter of 1824. Samual Lucas b 1768 (number 92 on page 131) and John Pryor, Jr (page134, 170, 171) were appointed as guardians. Sarah's siblings were Samuel b 17 Jan 1813, John Nelson b 17 Sep 1815, Elizabeth Anna b 12 Nov 1816, Mary Ellen b 27 Nov 1817, Temperance b 29 Apr 1823, and William b Aug 1824. I have not researched these people to see who they married and if they had children or not. William's lineage is John Lucas b 1760 who m Rachael Duvall, William Lucas b 1730 who m Sarah Higgins, Charles Lucas b 1692/3 who m Elizabeth Evans, and Thomas Lucas b ca 1650 first in America who m Dorothy ______ . I was told differently when I first started this adventure and for over 5 years persued the Governor Lucas line and eventually decided it wasn't my wife's line. I am interested in what line your's is. Eric A. Johnson Yorba Linda, CA varnivarni@aol.com Researching: Lucas, Hughes, Gatten, Vaughn in Belmont Co, OHIO

    1. [LUCAS-L] SNODGRASS, Sarah WV--- NEED HELP PLEASE!!
    2. Here goes, my great grandfather was Parker L. J. Lucas (anyone know what the L. J. stands for?) (1846-1891) s/o Madison Haines Lucas and Malinda Rock. Parker md. Sarah Isabelle SNODGRASS (d. before 1900 in Hamlin, Lincoln Co., WV). They had the following children: James M., Alonzo P., Malinda J., Henry R., Ollie, Silas Oxley, Millie Maye, Thomas M., and Elisha W. Lucas. I'm trying to find out more about Sarah Snodgrass. I'd like to thank those of you who have sent information already but I'm now more confused. Hope someone can help me to clear this up. First there is a listing for Sarah Isabelle Snodgrass d/o a pioneer miller named William James Snodgrass and Mildred Rau. It's reported Sarah md Parker on Jan. 1, 1873 in Hamlin. This information is from "Lincoln Co., WV and It's People" pg 118. Another possibility is a James B. Snodgrass (1809-1866) who md 2nd to Mildred Rees(c)e on Dec. 16, 1845. Two of their children listed are Isabella b. abt. 1846 says she md. Parker Lucas; and also listed is a Sarah J. b. abt. 1853. Sarah and Isabelle are there but as far back as my dad remembers, his great grandmothers name was Sarah Isabelle. Clearly in James daughters case they are reported as two seperate people. And last, According to "Lincoln Co., WV and It's People", Parker is buried in the Lucas Cemetery on Big Creek and Sarah is reported to be buried next to him following her death in January 1899. In the Lincoln Co. archives in the Lucas Cemetery it gives a listing for Parker Lucas and the next listing is for Sarah S. Lucas d. 1899 but says she is the daughter of Madison and Malinda Rock Lucas. I'm wondering if the S. stands for Snodgrass and the meaning just got mixed up. Sarah Susan Lucas was b in 1849 and died in Monroe Co., WV. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I've looked but haven't been able to find a Snodgrass mailing list. Is there one available? Thanks for all your time and thanks in advance for any help. Lora

    3. Dear Eric and list: It was most generous of you to share your info, and with a garage full of stuff...I'm sure your wife is tickled you find time for setting up your computer. <grin> Anyway, I have been on a blind search to find my Lucas Line (my mom's). I have come up with a little info and wonder if you or anyone else out there can help me further my research. PLEASE! The 1910 Arkansas census for Greene County has dwelling number 40/40 with 2 heads of household. This is unusual. James L. Dollons is listed as 1st head then: Ed C. Lucas (believe Edwin) is 2nd head with wife Ada. (I believe Ed is my ggrandfather, he m. Martha ADA Beatty.) Ed is 49 and m. 2 times. Ada is 36 and m. 1 time. They were m. for 17 yrs. Children 6 number living 4. Listed children are Fred (male), Mabel (daughter), Maud (daughter), Hazel (daughter). Ages 18, 14, 9, 5 respectfully. Maybe Fred was not their child? The family put in a lot of road miles. Fred b. IL , Mabel b. TN, Maud b. KY, and Hazel b. MO. Ed shows b. MO-his father US and Mother US. Ada lists Father TN, Mother KY, herself KY. Assuming she gave the info because of the completeness of her family births. I'm leaning toward believing the 2 children she lists as dead could actually have been from one of Ed's previous marriages and very much alive. They would be: Harvey Wesley Lucas - my grandfather and his sister Lula Belle Lucas Overturf. I have found Harvey's Obit. It says he died age 58 on January 11, 1945. His tombstone says 1944. He is buried in Independence County Arkansas. He m. 2Alma Bessie Summers. his 1st wife was Hattie or Mattie unkn. The Beatty family was quite prominent and I traced Ed through them. Please help me trace this line backwards. I have more current info if I have any cousins out there. It's amazing how my garage is stacked 5 feet high with one small slice in the middle to walk and my wife and kids wanting certain things for the kitchen, bedrooms, etc and I go for the genealogy stuff. Anabell's LUCAS book lists only one Eli Lucas. On page 96 she comments on the grandson of Thomas Lucas first in America who is Charles b 1720, son of Charles the planter b 1693. The Lucas family of Wash Twp Belmont Co, O, claim as their ancestor, one Charles Lucas who fought in the Rev War for the State of Md where he was born. It may be that their ancestor Charles Lucas, Rev War soldier, was a son of Charles Lucas b 1720, but there is no confirmation of this. Eli Lucas son of Charles was b in Va 1796, mar in Belmont Co, O, Martha A. Barker. They had eleven children, and five of their sons served in the Civil War. Issue: D1--Wm. Lucas. 3. Dear Lucas Researchers--I am trying to track down some New Hampshire Lucases, in particular a Daniel Lucas, who died in 1733 in Nottingham, Rockingham county NH, and whose will is recorded in NH State Papers, 32:476-477, as follows: > In the name of God, amen, I Daniell Luckas of Nottingham in the Province > of New hampshire in Newingland being in good health of body > Item I give unto my beloved sonnes James Luckas Thomas Luckas & Andrew > Luckas all the Land that Lys in the third division and in the fourth and > Last Division belonging to me, that is to say one hundred in the third > division and seventy eight in the Last Division they being part of the > right following the home Lott Lying in fish street No five the aforesaid > hundred ackers and seventy eight to be equally divided, amongst the sd > James and Thoames & Andrue Luckas & > Item I give unto my belove ' d sonne John Luckas the sume of ten > shillings and noe more & > Item I give unto my beloved sonne William Luckas the sume of ten > Shillings and noe more ................ > Item I give unto my beloved Sonne be the Law Nea'll m'Gaghe and his wife > jean m'Gaghe aless Luckas my Daughter ten shillings and noe more > Item I give unto my Grand Daughter Mary Randell the sume of twelfh pound > ore goods to the value of sd twelfh pound at the Discreation of my > exectuor ........................... > All the rest and residue of my > personall Estate Goods & Chattells whatsoeever I doe give and bequeath > unto my Loving and faithfull wife Barbara Luckas who I ordaine my full > and sole Executor of this my Last will and testament As this will makes clear, Daniel had sons James, Thomas, Andrew, John, & William, a daughter Jane, another daughter who married a Randall, and a wife, Barbara. I believe this Daniel was the grandfather of an ancestor of mine, James Lucas, who lived with his wife Charity and his children in Vershire VT (settled by people from Nottingham, Deerfield & Northwood NH), but I have been unable to establish the links between the two men. Daniel probably removed to New Hampshire from Pembroke, Mass (Plymouth colony) and may have been an original proprietor of Nottingham NH. Any information on either his ancestors or descendants, or on any early Lucases in Pembroke, Mass, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michele Stepto

They had the following children: James Madison, Alonzo Parker, Malinda Jane, Henry Rock, Ollie, Silux Oxley, Millie Maye, Thomas M., and Elisha Walter Lucas. Sarah was my gggrandmother and I would like to know more about her side of the family. They lived in/near Hamlin, Lincoln Co., WV. To date I have nothing more than her name. I did find the following item in a WV county: Joseph SNODGRASS 1790-1852 md second to Elizabeth Mannan on May 15, 1837. Joseph was the son of Joseph and Mary WALKER SNODGRASS. Four children listed: Leftwich b. about 1840, Marion b. about 1840, Sarah S. b. about 1847, and Clabourn b. about 1849. Does anyone know anything about either of the Sarah's listed or if maybe they are the same person? Both Sarah's are listed as being born about the same time. I'd appreciate any help on this matter. Thanks in advance. Lora

    3. I am looking for information about Benedict Lucas Sr born in 1774 in Maryland (some references have him born in VA ?). His father was Ignatius Lucas Sr born 1731and his mother Catherine was born 1734. There were 11 children listed in a 1776 Maryland census, 1 male above the age of 16, 4 males under 16, and 6 females. I have quite a bit of information on Benedict's descendants if you are interested. Any information about this family would be appreciated. They eventually settled in Breckinridge County, KY but it is believed they also lived in VA at some point. Benedict's wife, Rachel Crume was from Shenandoah County, VA. Thanks and good luck!
