According to Wikipedia , in 1998 the Former Townships of Bedford , Loughborough , Portland , and Storrington were amalgamated into a new Township called South Frontenac in the County of Frontenac north of Kingston Ontario . The original land deeds should still be on file in their registry office . It has been my experience that many of these OC land grants were actually never taken up by the original grantee as many were just not well situated for settling . Hope this helps . Cheers J. Author: pqrstny Surnames: Rogers, O'Neal Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.loyalists/773.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you. OK, here's another question for you on the OC dates This one is an excerpt from the Ancestry.ca-The Loyalists in Ontario O'NEAL, James of Ernestown. Lieut., Loyal Rangers. Widow Elizabeth. OC 20 July 1797. Died 1784. Margaret, m.---Johnson. OC 20 July 1797. OC 26 Feb 1798. Richard. OC 2 Nov 1797 Alice, m. Thomas Cook Jr. of Town of Kingston 11 Sept 1803. OC 25 Feb 1806. Mary, m. Moses Rogers, 26 Oct 1803. OC 26 Feb 1798. OC 2 June 1798. >From this, I'm gathering that James O'Neal was granted the OC on 20 July 1797, which went to his wife Elizabeth because he died in 1784. Margaret must have gotten hers on 20 July 1797 (from her father's service) and her husband ---Johnson must have gotten his on 26 Feb 1798 because he must have had a father (or he himself) was entitled to land. Right? Richard must have been over 21 and got it through his father. Alice must have married Thomas Cook, Jr on 11 Sept 1803 and she got her own OC on 25 Feb 1806 through her father. But what of Mary O'Neal and Moses Rogers? I'm guessing they got married on 26 Oct 1803, so maybe she was younger than 21; but she also received her own OC through her father James on 26 Feb 1798; and her husband Moses got his own OC through his own service or through his father's service on 2 June 1798? Am I reading that correctly? Here's another question for you. How do I find out if Moses received his OC because of himself or because of his father; and if it was because of his father, how do I find out who his father was? Thank you. Even if these other questions aren't answered, just explaining what OC means was very helpful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mccollm Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.loyalists/773.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm not sure what "2/5 Portland" stands for. O.C. however stands for "Order in Council". As it relates to Loyalist land petitions it means the date that the Order in Council was issued approving the petition. In order to be eligible to receive the land that a U.E. Loyalist or the son or daughter of a U.E. Loyalist was entitled to, the petitioner had to have reached the age of majority (21) or be married. This has led some researchers to interpret the O.C. date as either the 21st birthdate of the petitioner or the marriage date of the petitioner. It is synonymous with neither. It is simply the date that the Order in Council was issued, nothing else...regardless of what you might read elsewhere. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Young from Cornwall Ont. here . I think we have talked before . I am surprised that no one replied specifically to your query , so I will try to connect some dots . The Alexander Alex Grant you mentioned [Lot 8 Con 4] is the eldest Natural son of John Duldreggan Grant who settled on Lots 25 & 26 South Side of South Branch of the Raisin River , on north east corner of intersection of Cashion Glen Side Road and Street Road . These were the western lots given out in Charlottenburg Glengarry on McNiff's Map 1786 , as a two mile wide strip of land reserved as an Indian Reservation [known still as the Indian Lands] was west of him to the eastern Boundary Road of Cornwall Township Stormont County . The Grants Corner's you mention is at this western Boundary Road Cornwall Twp . John Duldreggan Grant never settled in the USA . He remained in Scotland until after the Rev War was over . His sister Isabella Duldreggan Grant was married to Simon Fraser Sr. who died in Albany NY in 1779 while prisoner of Americans . Isabella settled with her children [including Simon Fraser Jr. the Explorer] at St. Andrews West Ont . [north of Cornwall] . John Duldreggan Grant , Alexander Alex Grant , and several other half siblings , sailed from Scot. on the Cochran 1785 . The ship was diverted to Philadelphia [where they over wintered] and they walked to Glengarry spring 1786 [the same year this John Duldreggan married his last wife Mary McIntyre in Montreal --- he had 8 children with her --- the last being Alpin Grant born 1802 the year John Duldreggan Grant died age 65 . Alexander Alex Grant and his half brother Honourable Alexander Grant received Lot 26 from their father in his Will , and Alexander Alex bought out his brother's share . Alexander Alex Grant married Ann / Nancy McDonell [daughter of Donald McDonell KRRNY, killed 1777 at Fort Stanwix NY] , she received land grant as daughter of UEL so her family also UE . Alexander Alex Grant b. 1756 d. 1851 the year he and wife appear in 1851 Census [age 95] . Sometime in those 95 years he acquired the Lot 8 Con 4 Indian Lands [also Street Road] which in his Will he leaves to his eldest son Angus Grant b. 1791 d. 1877 who then added Lots 7 , 9 , 10 , to form a nice little parcel . To tie this into the original posting on those Kingsborough Patent Grant members . The Peter Grant at top of first posting , is also my Ancestor . He was also KRRNY and settled on Lot 10 Front Charlottenburg which he shared with Kenneth McDonell KRRNY married to Jenny Grant . This Peter Grant had son Duncan Grant KRRNY who received part Lot 20 South Branch Road , on McNiff's Map 1786 . Duncan Grant married Henrietta Henny McLennan {daughter of John McLeland / McLennan KRRNY who received part Lot 23 Street Road directly east of John Duldreggan Grant] . This Duncan and Henny Grant oldest daughter Isabella Grant b. 1794 married the afore mentioned Angus Grant of Lots 7, 8, 9, 10 Con 4 Indian Lands . I also have a comment on DNA genealogy . I think you would do as well consulting a Palmist . Research and sharing works . Cheers J. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He appeared with a witness who stated that he knew him to be of good character and that he had resided in the area upwards of four years. That was all there was to it in October of 1791. My thought is that he hurried to do it so that he could own property, but that is just a guess. He had to have been one of the very first. If he had only waited a year! Not all Loyalists left the US in 1783; mostly those whose property had been confiscated. Also, many Loyalists later returned with no need for any special documentation. Later, Loyalist descendants, born outside the USA, would have to apply for citizenship. I would imagine that Thomas Alva Edison's father would likely have had to apply even though his father's parents were likely from New Jersey. Would not the naturalization papers you mention suggest a place-of-origin? Thomas. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are two Alexander Grant , one a sergeant the other probably a private , both probably KRRNY , who received land and are listed on McNiff's Map 1786. The private soldier Alexander Grant shares Lot 27 1st Concession [or Front] of Glengarry County, Township of Lancaster with a William Grant ; and they share same Lot 27 in the 2nd Con [that means these lots butted each other] . Their names were abbreviated on this McNiff's Map 1786 , as they are Alex. and Wm.Grant on the 1st , and just A. and W. Grant on the 2nd . This William is probably a close relation to Alexander . Many of those listed were of Scottish or Irish heritage [same holds true for German and other non first language English speakers] , their names were recorded by persons who did their best and wrote the names phonetically , and many of the first settlers retained that same spelling to ensure they retained their UE status . Later generations have adopted slightly varied spellings .
