    1. [LOYALISTS] Daniel Cook
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jodistefano Surnames: Daniel Cook/Lydia Churchill Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.loyalists/777/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Esther Wright's book "the Loyalists of New Brunswick" is not longer in print and I cannot find it in any of my local public libraries. However, my great-great-great . . . grandfather is in that book and I would like to get a copy of what Ms. Wright writes about Grandpa Cook. His story starts on page 212 of her book Family lore is that he was a loyalist from Dutchess County and I have found some land grants issued to him. But I don't know who his wife was. And I am not sure how his son, Daniel Cook Jr. followed him to Canada. Daniel Cook Jr. married Lydia Churchill (Nova Scotia). But I'm not sure what happened to them from 1775- 1785. If anyone can help with getting that page from Ms. Wrights' book, I would very much appreciate it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: young1451 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.loyalists/704.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Recently I too discovered that Grant (Duldreaggan) , John aka John Duldreggan Grant aka Mr John Grant as he appears on Lots 25 & 26 Street Road Charlottenburg Glengarry McNiff's Map 1786 had been inserted on the UEL list . Supposedly someone from the Vancouver Branch of UELAC had it PROVEN . This same Vancouver Branch UELAC has apparently misplaced the records of this , as apparently the National UELAC has as well . Curiouser and curiouser . This same John Duldreggan Grant had remained in Scotland with his 9 children into year 1785 when he and 8 of his children [no wife] boarded Ship [ship's name in dispute] and destination Glengarry Canada . By deceit or misadventure the Ship put in at New York , where they overwintered , and they came overland to Glengarry in 1786 . This John Duldreggan Grant never took up land or settled in the American Colonies prior to the Rev War ending in 1783 . How does this make him a Loyalist ! He married a Mary McIntyre in Montreal and had 8 more! kids with her , yet I have not seen any Land Petitions from any of his 16 children as s/d of a UE . Why can't UELAC furnish their PROOF !!! I am eager to hear other's thoughts on this matter . Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: young1451 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.loyalists/222.5.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Ulla . I am surprised that no one has answered your query directly . Your Finlay Grant is to be foung on the Kingsborough Patent Rent Roll with Rent Due Date 25 Sept 1778 , which puts him in a grouping with my ancestors William Carr and his son in law David McEwan . Their Ship the Snow Brittanie left Scotland 1773 [probably with Finlay aboard] and put in at Dublin where my guys boarded . I agree that he is not likely directly related to the other Grant mentioned in this thread . Finlay Grant is found on the KRRNY muster roll , born 1736 , no wife's name given , but one son and daughter . That son would be John Grant , daughter unknown , and probably Lewis Grant is a son of Duncan Grant Sr . Finlay Grant drew the west half Lot 19 Front Charlottenburg which he exchanged for the east half of Lot 17 South Branch Road to be next his son John Grant who held west half of that Lot 17 . The trade was with the Heirs of Kenneth McKenzie , but since the trade took place while Patrick McNiff was making his 1786 Map , your Finley Grant appears nowhere on that McNiff's Map 1786 but a McKenzie name appears on both these Lots . This John Grant later had to go to court in 1800s to prove his ownership east half Lot 17 , which is still in the family today , and known as the Thornapple Tree . My John Grant married a Flora Grant daughter of Peter Grant from Lancaster. She was born about 1781 according to her tombstone in the Summerstown Salem United Church. According to their records, her tombstone reads: Flora Grant-daughter of Peter Grant and wife of John Grant b. Glenmorrison, North Britain, d. Dec 10, 1821, age 70 years. Erected by his sons Alex, Peter, and Duncan. I think the daughter of Duncan Grant was born 29 Aug 1809, d. 09 Nov 1868. Author: bgressel Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.loyalists/775.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Elaine, In my family tree, John Ban Grant's second wife was Flora Grant. She was the daughter of Peter Grant Senior from Lancaster. Her younger brother, Peter Grant Jr. was a shoemaker in Lancaster and married Jenet Ross. This marriage resulted in no children. From Peter Junior's will, I have pieced together a family tree for Peter Senior of Lancaster. Peter Senior was born in Scotland about 1740. His wife was Margaret Ross and was born in Scotland about 1745. They had (at least) the following children: Flora born 1781 (married to John Ban Grant),Peter Junior born 1784 (no children), Isabella born 1788 (married to James Farrell), and Alexander (?). Since there are the Scottish naming patterns to work with, Flora, who was married to John Ban Grant has a daughter named Flora Grant (she was born in 1815 and married John McArthur) so I don't think this is your Flora. It is possible your Flora could be from this Lancaster group though. As JYoung points out, the McDonnells and! Grants had many connections. I haven't sorted the Alexander out from this group (so many Alexanders). Perhaps your Flora is from this group or maybe (probably) there are more children from Peter Senior that I haven't identified and they may have had a Flora. I just thought I would throw this out as a possibility. All the best, Barb Gressel Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
