I wanted to share with the other Martin Loy (to America 1741) researchers my recent discovery: a certain "gender change" for one of the children of Peter and Philopena (Sharp) Loy. (Peter being son of John Loy, Jr., son of John and Mary (Holt) Loy, son of Martin and Catherine (Foust) Loy.) The book "Know Your Relatives" and published census transcriptions had given Peter's next to youngest child as son "Manisea" Loy (1850 census where name seems illegible), or Riley Loy (as given in 1860 census). Upon viewing the census rolls myself prior to my own book publication, I had seen the 1850 showed this child as a female, and still couldn't make out the name, while the 1860 showed a male, Riley. I assumed the 1850 enumerator just made a mistake putting "female." While researching the 1830-40 census of Peter Loy in Campbell Co., TN, I realized he had no sons that age for that child, just daughters. With my Ancestry census image subscription, I re-checked Peter's 1850 census household and suddenly I could read the name as "Marrilla"! Then I checked the 1860 census and discovered something I'd missed when I viewed the roll years ago. The enumerator originally had written "female" for Riley, with occupation "domestic," which was written for sister "Haisey" (Hazey), too. Then someone with slightly different handwriting than the enumerator had written "M" above the "F" and again "M" on the left side of the age, indicating that the gender of Riley should be male. It is my guess the name "Riley" was pronounced "Rilly" (rhyming with "Billy") and short for Marilla. But everything seems to indicate "he" was really a "she." So, everyone with a copy of my book, please note this correction. I couldn't find any Marilla/Riley Loy in the Union Co., TN marriages so wonder where she went after 1860. Delores p.s I'm also 99 percent certain the Anna Loy, age 15, who died January 1850 in the 1850 Campbell Co., TN mortality schedule was another daughter of Peter Loy. The 1840 census gives an "extra" daughter who would fit in this age category but she isn't in the 1850 census.
