My family just went into lower New jersey this weeken for a high school marching band competition. If you have never seen these they are very much into the arts and it is much like watching a string of good plays. Anyway, we passed through alot of areas where roadsigns read .Entering SOME township. In fact, where we were going to, the high school was named Middle Township, and is down near Wildwood, NJ. Well, several of the townships we passed through looked like open fields, and I remarked, where is the town. Because no sooner had we seen a sign for one township, than we ran across another sign less than a mile of the first one, that said, Entering SOME boro. My oldest son is a soplmore in college and informed me that, he understood what townships were in the olden days. He said that a group of people would form a township, mostly farmers, by subdividing the land into evenly divided lots. Each lot was the same size. I should say farmettes or whatever, as the lot sizes where not as we know them today, 1/4 to 3 acres, say. they were more like the size of a farm perhaps. But the idea was that the persons who owned the land pretty much had squared off or rectangular portions of land, instead of irregularly shaped parcels. And he thinks it was done this way to try to evenly divide the land between persons. The reason I wrote about this on this list is that many of the ancestors to the LOY family originated out of Pennsylvania, where I do know there are many townships as well. Thought it was an interesting note to pass along. By the way, in my earlier research on Loy's in PA I had learned that some Loys lived in the Cocalico township area. I believe it was John George Loy who lived in Frederick, MD by the mid 1750's time frame. Cocalico township is near Lebanon, PA, home of the famous Lebanon bologna. I learned about where this township was through my son's band travels in PA as well, and just plain old curiosity. My son's band has competed against bands from Cocalico township in Lebanon itself. In fact we are headed there next weekend, and I plan to do some sightseeing on the way to the competition. Well Lebanon, PA is locate in Lebanon County, PA. It is northwest of Philadelphia. and is also the neighboring county on the west side of Berks County, PA. I do know that Loy's have been found in Berks County in PA in the early 1800 census records.

Marge, just for your and anyone else's info, your link was a clickable one. I, too, was confused about links in email when I first got on the internet in 1997. As long as you type the URL starting with http:// (in other words, not editing it to begin with just www.) the email browser automatically makes it into a clickable link. No html needed, in other words. The only exception is if it's a long url and takes up more than one line: only the first line is clickable and a copy and paste of the URL in your browser is needed for accessing the site. Raquel, I'm glad you mentioned about those other Loys in Los Angeles. I'll be able to sort out who belongs to whom maybe. From the Rootsweb CA death records, there are lots of them here in Riverside County, even. Trouble is, I've looked for several obituaries in our Palm Springs paper and even the Riverside County Press Enterprise and neither paper has the five obituaries I've searched for. I assumed that everyone who died in a certain area had an obituary published, though it could have been published in another city. By the way, to get to the CA deaths, there is an easier URL to get to the site. (If you've noticed on the internet, some sites can be accessed in several ways.) The one I use is one Angela sent a while back: http://searches.rootsweb.com How simple to remember can you get? Oh, and I found out there are three ways to access my Loy site. One is the long url everyone should know. The other is http://clik.to/loyhistory Now I find there's another that my site provider has: http://members.fortunecity.com/loyhistory Take your pick. As the old saying goes, all roads lead to....the Complete Loy History Website. ;-) DRW
