    3. Merry Christmas everyone! I rarely do forwards of email, but I got this today from Everton and after checking out the pertaining site thought many of our Loy list might be interested in this. Especially for family members they've been trying to coax onto the web. It seems to be an alternative from Web TV--and won't tie up your TV while surfing! It sounds like a contridiction where Everton says it's free, then pay $700. The device really is free but with a 3 year contract. The "catch" is the $21.95 per month internet service charge (which one would pay anyway with any ISP) but there is a $100 discount if the 3 year service is paid in advance, which would be $689. Delores ---------- From: fhn@everton.com To: history@everton.com Subject: [FHN 25dec00] An Inexpensive Tablet PC Date: Mon, Dec 25, 2000, 4:16 AM EVERTON'S FAMILY HISTORY NEWSLINE =========================================== Sponsored by: Everton's Genealogical Helper In the current issue: "How To: Conduct an Area Search" http://www.everton.com/subscribe/ =========================================== Monday, 25 December 2000 An Inexpensive Tablet PC The dream for some has always been to surf the Net without a keyboard. Handhelds like the Palm Pilot and various Pocket PCs have whetted the appetites of these gizmophiles, but the screen wasn't big enough. Tablet computers about the size of a sheet of paper (about eight by 12 inches) have been available for years, but the cost (in the thousands of dollars) has been a major roadblock for the gizmophile with a conscience (and a budget). Mada PC wants to change that, with a new tablet computer in the "free" price range. Free that is, if you sign up for their proprietary Internet access service. The service costs US$21.95 a month, about the same as AOL. But there's a bonus: sign up for three years of service, and pay nothing for the Nada PC Surf Board. Or pay US$689 up front, and use your Surf Board any way you want. What does $700 get you? The Surf Board looks like an oversize (2.2 pound) Etch-A-Sketch with an 8-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 640 by 480 pixels. In color. It comes with a 56K modem, a serial port (for a mouse) and two USB ports (printer, etc.) so you can use it with peripherals you already have. Also included: a PCcard slot and a compact flash slot, and connections to run the unit from the AC power coming out of the wall rather than batteries. Unfortunately, you can't buy the Surf Board in a store, but you can sign up for one now so you'll be in line when they start to ship in January 2001. 1. [LOY] Fw: Holiday Greetings from Linda Wilson Nimori
    2. Linda Nimori
    3. Warm holiday wishes for all of you at the Loy web site. Let me offer you some interesting thoughts to ponder during this joyous yuletide season as you contemplate why our ancestors and their descendants are so important--- Did you know that most people think the Twelve Days of Christmas are those twelve days preceding this blessed event? Actually, Christmas is a season that begins December 25 and lasts twelve days until January 6---the Day of Epiphany---the day when most Christian churches celebrate the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Light of the World. This day also recalls the journey of the Three Kings---the Magi, or the Three Wise Men; it's the day they found the Holy Child in Bethlehem. From 1558 until 1829, people in England were not allowed to practice their faith openly. During this era, someone wrote 'The Twelve Days of Christmas" as a carol that could be sung in public without risk of persecution. The song has two levels of interpretation: the outward (enjoyed by all in a humorous, whimsical fashion) and the hidden (known to faithful members of the church). Each element in the carol is a code word for a religious reality: 1 Partridge in a Pear Tree---Jesus Christ 2 Turtledoves---the Old and the New Testaments 3 French Hens---Faith, Hope, Charity 4 Calling Birds---the Four Gospels of the New Testament St. Matthew St. Mark St. Luke St. John 5 Gold Rings---the Torah [the Law], the first five books of the Old Testament Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy 6 Geese A-Laying---the six days of creation (Genesis 1) "And God said, Let there be light, . . . "And God made the firmament, and divided the waters . . . "And God said, . . . Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree . . . "And God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. "And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, . . . "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: . . ." 7 Swans A-Swimming---the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) Wisdom Knowledge Faith Healing Miracles Prophecy Tongues 8 Maids A-Milking---the eight Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:8-10) "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kindom of heaven." 9 Ladies Dancing---the nine Fruits of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-23) Love Joy Peace Longsuffering Gentleness Goodness Faith Meekness Temperance 10 Lords A-Leaping---the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17) "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, . . . "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; . . . "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. "Honour thy father and thy mother: . . . "Thou shalt not kill. "Thou shalt not commit adultery. "Thou shalt not steal. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, . . . wife, . . . nor any thing that is thy neighbour's." 11 Pipers Piping---the eleven faithful Apostles (Matthew 10:2-4) Simon, called Peter Andrew, his brother James, the son of Zebedee John, his brother Philip Bartholomew Thomas Matthew, the publican James, the son of Alphaeus Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus Simon, the Canaanite 12 Drummers Drumming---the twelve tenets of belief in the Apostles Creed, found in the Book of Common Prayer: "I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. "I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead; on the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen." This, then, is the hidden meaning of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and the secret behind the song. Enjoy singing it for the fun it brings, but keep in mind that it's true meaning is sacred. "In our daily lives, we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but the gratefulness that makes us happy." Have a joyous yuletide season! Linda Wilson Nimori ---2nd great-granddaughter of Benjamin DeArmond and Louisa Loy ---3rd great-granddaughter of George Loy Jr. and Barsheba Massengale ---4th great-granddaughter of George Loy Sr. and Catherine Tillman ---5th great-granddaughter of Martin Loy and Catherine Foust

This database contains millions of records of people whose names have appeared in printed genealogical records and family histories. With data from sources largely from the last century, each entry contains the person's complete name, the year of the biography's publication, the person's state of birth (if known), abbreviated biographical data, and the book and page number of the original reference. In addition to family histories, other genealogical collections are indexed. These include the "Boston Transcript" (a genealogical column widely circulated), the complete 1790 U.S. Federal Census, and published Revolutionary War records. The most recent update to this database reflects the inclusion of volumes 196-206. For researchers of American ancestors, this can be one of the most valuable databases available at Ancestry.com. Most of the works referenced in the AGBI are housed at the Godfrey Memorial Library in Connecticut. A photocopy service is available. Please contact Godfrey Memorial Library at 134 Newfield St, Middletown, CT 06457 or via e-mail at mailto:referenceinfo@godfrey.org to make use of this service. 1. [LOY] Loy marriages in West Virginia
    2. Grady Loy
    3. Ancestry.com has posted free for 10 days a database that has marriages from several West Virginia counties including Hampshire County between 1863 and 1900. There are 37 marriages of Loys all in Hampshire County, all all almost certainly descendants of John Loy of Berks Cy PA and Frederick Cy VA through his son Daniel and probably most of these through Daniel's son William. Many of these I saw in the notes of Nellie Loy Whitmore who had access to the original and/or family records no doubt but I suspect a few may be new information. For those (not so numerous) ones of us researching the John Loy line this might be useful. The site can be accessed at http://ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4484.htm or by accessing ancestry.com, going to home and looking on the middle of the right side of the page. Grady

    1. Re: [LOY] Names in Stone Book
    2. I know of the Names in Stone Book for cemeteries in Frederick County, MD as I live within 2 miles of the Frederick County line. I have visited the Frederick Historical Society in Frederick, MD, (Frederick having been the largest city within 15 miles of my house, it once was a busy social and shopping town until my town began to be more commercialized). The book is definitely not worth your spending $132.00 on. It may contain some Loy's, but if I recall, it has very few Loy's compared to all the other names in the book. I could offer to get the material to you as soon as I can manage another trip to the Historical Society. That would not be too hard for me as I think they are open on Saturdays. Perhaps after the holidays. P.S. We just bought a scanner for one of my Christmas gifts, although my husband insisted on setting it up now. So I can copy the pages and scan them and send them to you. Okay?
