Consisting of 800,000+ death notices and covering the early 1800s through 1975, the Necrology File is searchable not only by the name of the deceased but also by keywords in the death notices. Users can search names of relatives, churches, synagogues, funeral homes, place names, and other relevant information in this online format. The original File was compiled over a period of years in the Library and consisted of the death notices clipped and pasted onto individual index cards. In the 1970's, the File was microfilmed to preserve the content of the death notices.
