    3. -----Original Message----- From: Rochelle Walls [mailto:rochelle@e.coolworks.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 12:47 PM To: Loy-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {not a subscriber} Delores' power outage Hi everyone, In case anyone has been emailing me in the past three days (or waiting for the Loy site update!) and wondered what happened to me, our electric has been out all this time for our whole village. I'm sending this via my "extra" webmail address from the college computer. (Ironically, the cause isn't the California power crunch, but someone ran into a power pole.) At times like these, I wonder how our Loy ancestors and kin did it, without air condition, refrigerators, or microwaves! Especially those that moved out West. 1. [LOY] Badtrans Virus
    2. Scott and Roxanne Munns
    3. Dear Researchers, I realize that I have already warned all of you about this virus. However, it is still growing and propagating, and I decided that another warning was in order. As soon as I know of any address on our list that is sending out this virus/worm, it is being unsubbed and a message sent to the unfortunate individuals explaining the reason they were unsubbed. Since it responds immediately to any new messages sent to the infected computer, it appears to be coming from the list. It is not coming through the list. PLEASE remember, people are not sending this out, this virus/worm is doing it and the individual does not know it is happening, until someone tells them. Some are reporting that various anti-virus programs are detecting it, others are reporting their programs are not detecting it. Here are 2 links that will take you to the archives for the Virus Discussion list at Rootsweb for more info and ideas on how to protect your computer and how to deal with any virus or worm. http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=VIRUS-DISCUSSION http://archiver.rootsweb.com/VIRUS-DISCUSSION-L/ you can join by subscribing to mailto:VIRUS-DISCUSSION-L-request@rootsweb.com or mailto:VIRUS-DISCUSSION-D-request@rootsweb.com If you receive the Bad Trans or any other virus/worm please refer to these archives, for info and answers or contact the list adminstrator if you need help getting into these archives or subscribing. mailto:VIRUS-DISCUSSION-admin@rootsweb.com Remember if you do receive a virus from someones computer, the people at the other end have feelings and this is not a vindictive act by that individual. In order to prevent the sending of this virus/worm to others with the appearance they are coming from this list please notify me PRIVATELY with an address, I can take care of this without big problems. The following message or something similar is sent to the unknowing individual, PRIVATELY, to AVOID embarrassment and hurt feelings. Dear listmember, I apologize that I had to unsub your address temporarily, it appears you may have acquired the Bad Trans Virus/Worm. To avoid it being spread this is the safest way to handle it. It is sending messages from your address that appear to be coming from this list. Unsuspecting individuals are opening it and becoming infected. This is nothing personal, you have done nothing wrong, we just need to take care of it. As soon as you get it taken care of please send me a note and I will gladly resubscribe you. Thanks for your patience and understanding. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks to everyone for their patience Roxanne ListHostess

    3. Is it just me, or are others also being denied access to the ten day free access at Ancestry.com. Last week I noticed they no longer allow immediate free access, but it says we have to register (though free) to access it. Then when I did, and tried to access it, the site still wouldn't let me in, saying I had to buy the premium service even to access the 10 day trial databases. The site will let me do a search and retrieve the number of entries in the search, but it won't let me see the actual information. I noticed they've added more counties to the TN marriage database and wanted to do a Loy surname search, but it wouldn't let me see the entries. Delores

Adam Loy and Barbara Cassel; 5. John George Loy and Mary Elizabeth Traut/Trout Henry Wilbert Loy (Henry, 18) "Bert" was born on 16 July 1871 at Elkhart, Indiana. and died at Chanute, Kansas, April 9, 1953. He was married on 21 September 1898 at Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri, to Sarah Ellender Wilson, the daughter of John S. and Sarah E. Wilson. She was born on 4 November 1875 in Butler County, [state?] died in Wichita, Kansas on 26 January 1958. Bert is named as H.W. Loy in most newspaper accounts and mistakenly noted in his obituary as " Herbert W. Loy," This may have been an assumption on the part of the newspaper writer as he was known as "Bert." 1. [LOY] Viruses
    2. Scott and Roxanne Munns
    3. Dear Researchers, I have just recently been taught a hard lesson about viruses! Please, let me reassure you that you cannot "catch" a virus through the Rootsweb mailing lists. They do not distribute attachments, and therefore any virus coming through the list gets "cleaned." However, as I just learned, if someone reads your message from the list and then deletes it (without ever replying to you), the virus will cause a message to be sent to YOU with the virus attached, and a nice friendly text message saying "Take a look at this attachment." (or something to that effect). In genealogy, many of us send attachments after making a connection on a mailing list, so this is particularly dangerous! One of you just sent that message to me, and I got caught! So, please, would you all take a moment to update your anti-virus software? (I really don't need any more of those messages.) 2. Scott and Roxanne Munns
    3. Dear LOY Researchers, I just want to remind and reassure all of you, it is nearly (never say never) impossible to get viruses through the mailing list. Due to RootsWeb's "no attachments" policy, they do not distribute e-mail attachments, therefore the viruses won't come through. If, however, you communicate with someone on the list to their personal e-mail account, this (of course) is no longer true. This message is, however, a very good reminder that it's time to update (or obtain) your anti-virus software. If you need suggestions, please contact me off-list at: LOY-admin@rootsweb.com Happy Researching!
