    3. Dear Delores, No, I never found them there. William L. Loy's marriage certificate says he was born in LaSalle Co., IL, so that may have been the only IL location for them. I sure did search the Effingham census records for them. I think I'll start on LaSalle County now. Thanks! Joanna

    3. Joanna, Did you ever find any records of your family in the Effingham area? Except for the Isaac Loy born in OH, all of the Effingham County Loys descend from my ancestor John Henry Loy, son of Henry, son of Martin. For a while the descendants of Matthias Loy lived there (ca. 1870-1890ish) but they moved on to other states, such as KS. One of the daughters of this branch married one of the grandsons of John Henry Loy, but they divorced. Other than this, I didn't find any other "stray" Loy family in the county that couldn't be accounted for. As a side note, just before that Isaac F. Loy came to the county, there were also two Loy women (sisters?) that married Moore men there. One was Cinderella Loy who md. 25 February 1863 (Effingham Co., IL) Samuel Moore and the other was Mary E. (b. ca. 1824 KY) who married A.S. Moore. One record gives Mary E. b. OH, which is same as Isaac, who was born ca. 1839 OH and ran a livery business. In 1850 there was also a Hugh W. Loy b. 1820 KY, who was the only Loy not descended from my John Henry Loy. The fact he was from KY makes me think he may have been an unrecorded first cousin. Have you come across any of these in your family records? Also, from the way it sounded was that William P. lived in Effingham prior to his shipwreck. If so, I wonder if he left any family at all in Effingham? He's not in any census I've found. I also own the state census on microfilm and book, and he wasn't listed there either. Delores By the way, to me Effingham is more south than central. I used to live in northern IL (Galesburg) and to us Bloomington area was central and Effingham was south--or, it would be if the state was divided into thirds. If divided into fourths, I guess it would be south central. I'm the first generation since 1839 that wasn't born in that area, though I did visit there and grew up in the state. 3. Hello! Effingham is in central Illinois. Nat Geographic had an issue last year on the national road (c1840-50). It went west from general area of Uniontown, PA to Effingham and points west. Explains how the Loys got there. There still seems to be presence of the Loy surname in the area. Joanna

Surnames: Loy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Eex.2ACIB/337.1 Message Board Post: Joanna, As I mentioned in a reply to your prior posting, I had corresponded with Raymond Loy of Washington State in the 1980s, who at that time was a retired dentist for the FBI. In one of his letters I have here, he said that his great-grandfather was William Loy and William was "born 46 miles from Pittsburg, PA and moved to IL. In 1849 he went to California in the gold rush and was shipwrecked off Panama. He then returned to St. Joseph, MO where he had a furniture store. He stayed in that area until his death. My grandfather [Raymond's] was born in MO and my father in Kansas. I only met my grandfather once. He had a sister whose married name was Darby and lived in Denver, Colorado. It seems that the Loy family left PA and separated into Iowa, Ill and Colorado. I never heard them mention N Carolina [I had asked him if he was connected to my Loys of NC] Years ago a lady wrote me saying she was married to a Loy. His family consisted of six boys who all had Biblical names such! as Abraham Isaac Samuel etc." In another letter, Raymond told me Union Gap was the town in PA where his great-grandfather was from. "There were 6 brothers and some sisters. The boys names were all biblical names wsuch as Abraham Isaac Samuel Andrew etc. They all migrated west to Illinois Iowa and Colorado and Ohio and Tennessee. My branch comes from Illinois probaby the same branch as yours because they were from Effingham Illinois." [I surmised he may have been from the Matthias Loy branch, since those were the only other Loys I'd known that lived in Effingham Co besides mine from Martin Loy. Until now, I'd thought Ray had just been saying because mine were from IL and his were from IL, but here he specifically says Effingham. I'll have to check this out. Maybe they lived there between census so I never caught them.] "My great-grandfather left Ill in 1849 for the gold rush by ox team and returned after being shiprecked at the [Isnis? can't read the word] of Panama. He traveled through the jungl! e before the canal was built. He returned to St. Joseph, MO and started a furniture store. I was born in Seattle in 1909 and for years there were only two Loys in the phone book. My parents O.W. Loy and an A. C. Loy." [The A.C. Loy was my grandmother's uncle Andrew Clifton Loy. DRW] Raymond ends this letter with " ...I have two sons and two daughters. My sons names are Raymond and John they live in Washington State." I hope this helps some. Delores

    3. Beth, Since the message was gatewayed from the message board, I think you'll have to reply to the message board for the poster to get your message. But as to where Effingham is, it's in southern Illinois. This is where my Loys came from, but I've never run across any of these Loys living there. In 1870 it was just my Loys and descendants of Matthias Loy, and an unknown Isaac Loy family from Ohio that I've yet to find ancestry on. 3. Angela, The following account came from 1909: C. R. Munns, a young traveling salesman whose engagement to Miss Mary Green of this city was announced some time ago, was killed early Thursday morning and his body badly mutilated by the cars. No one seems to be able to to account for the accident. All that is known is that the body of Mr. Munns was carried some distance by a train. The limbs were severed from the body and portions left along the track between LaValle and Wonewoc. His coat was found on the pilot of the engine pulling 509 when the train arrived at Elroy. A memorandum book contained a request that in case of accident notice be sent to Miss Green of this city, and to his father at Fennimore. Mr. Munns was in Reedsburg Wednesday afternoon and evening, leaving on Train 503, about two o'clock Thursday morning. Notice of the accident was sent here and Miss Green, Mr. and Mrs. James Miles, and Attorney W. A. Wyse went unto Wonewoc on No. 507. Miss Green identified Mr. Munn's watch chain, and some letters in his coat. An inquest was held late yesterday afternoon, but we are unable to state what the finding was. The accident has deeply stirred our people, many of whom had become acquainted with Mr. Munns on his occasional visits here and all of whom sympathize profoundly with Miss Green, whose grief is easily imagined. - Reedsburg Times I thought it a bit strange, too. 3. Angela, I spent my teen years in Effingham. I knew a a lot of people, my age, who were killed or severly injured by trains. It was not an unusual occurance in the 1980s, although then the ppl were in automobiles. Effingham has always been a dangerous place regarding trains. 3. Angela, What Joel says is really right on. Since it was known as the Crossroads of America, Illinois probably has the most railroad lines of any of the states. I remember when I lived there, it was always a rush by my mom to get me to school before the train would come to delay us. My classmate's father and brother were killed when a train hit their car. Even today, a lot of people try to beat the trains by crossing right in front of them! But there are some that are killed just from improper warnings, such as was in my friend's father's case. In 1944, near Jacksonville, IL, my maternal grandfather was killed and my grandmother nearly fatally injured when their truck was hit by a train. The crossing was known to cause a lot of accidents prior to this, as there were no light signals, just the wooden crossing signs, and it was on a curve where it was hard to see the train. (After his death, it affected the community so much because he was so well liked by them, that they finally got the crossing lights in.) In Effingham, I know of three family members that were killed by trains there, including Voris. It was probably about the time Voris was killed that my paternal grandfather's teenage (or just pre-teen) cousin was selling newspapers. As the train was pulling out, a man called from the window that he wanted a paper. The boy went to give the man a paper, when he lost his footing and slid under the train, which killed him. Then there are the cases where people used to cross the train bridge. (I forgot how to spell tressle, so I'm saying bridge.) Voris is listed in the Johnson Funeral Home records, Effingham, IL, as a boy of R.L. Loy. The date the arrangements began was 26 July 1902. Previously that year, Voris had just graduated from Chapman College. His obituary would probably be in the Effingham paper, which is on microfilm at the Effingham library. If they haven't gotten their new microfilm readers yet, you might want to wait until they do. When I was there, the copies were very blurry and the only way to read anything somewhat clear was to hold the film handle a certain way. When I visited there in 1995, it seemed about every street my aunt drove down, we had to cross train tracks, so there are a lot of them. Delores

He was born in Germany in about 1836, and came to the US, where he enlisted in the Civil War in 1861. He lived in Indiana at the time of his enlistment. So, if you can take a look at the bible again, I would be most interested if it contained any info on GABRIEL LOY. I have no info on his parents or siblings at this time. Thank you, Beth STEINBERG ARNOTT.

I did not look inside the Bible. It was in the Gas Light Antique Shop in Pierceton, Indiana. I do not have any connection to the Loy Family. I do research on my family so I know I would like it if it belonged to my family. Hope this is helpful to someone. Tim
