Hi Jack, I was glad to see you use the term barrier islands. Folks would do well to remember that those strips of sand are just that--barriers--to protect the mainland from storms. Our ancestors had better sense than to construct homes and live on them. But out in California, it is no different than those folks who construct homes on the side of cliffs and in canyons and then wonder why their homes topple into the sea during a mudslide or burn in an annual canyon fire. We are more "advanced" than those who came before, but seemingly have a lot less common sense. And here in the heart of Delmarva, note that when one looks at the position of historic homes, they are a good distance from the rivers--not perched right on top of them. I've gotten damage reports from my relatives in South Jersey -- pretty much directly in the storm's path but closer to the Delaware than the shore. No real damage, just soggy. It seems that the big damage, although intense, was in a relatively narrow band that could be adversely affected by the storm surge. It just so happens that NYC, Hoboken, etc. are in that band. As a hurricane/tropical storm, I don't think it came anywhere close to Carol in the 50s. I think the biggest change over the years on these "barrier islands" is that more and more people live there year-round. I hope something is being done about getting them help first, before dealing with the summer-only places.
