Can anyone help identify where "Holly Swamp" in Worcester Co. might be....In 1780, Marshall Smith sold to Levy Brown, a parcel called the "Garden Spot" in the nothernmost part of the "Holly Sawmp"...In 1802, Marshall Smith bought "Pleasant Grove" in the "Holly Swamp" from Geo Selby, son & heir of Parker Selby...In 1780, Marshall Smith was a planter of Worc Co., MD....the Marshall Smith of 1802, was from Sussex, DE. Possible its the same or separate Marshall Smith's. Curious where "Holly Swamp" is located. Thanks! Mike Adkins
Mike, there is a Holly Swamp in southern Worcester Co on this map, east of Pocomoke City about midway to the Bay. You've got to really zoom in to see the tiny labels. One description in plats.net said it belonged to Elisha Pennewell. It was located west of Bear Swamp. Also, it was west of the Pocomoke River, so it's now in another county. Elisha Penewell also comes up in plats.netunder Wicomico County, too, but there weren't any scans, and not Holly Swamp, either. Southeast of Salisbury, Maryland, there is a Bear Swamp Road, going from near the airport, running east. Johnson Road coming from the southeast side of Salisbury soon becomes Bear Swamp Road, meandering generally east through mostly unpopulated country, and ends at Rt. 554 south of Powelville. Liz- Thanks so much for your reply. Im just getting back into genealogy after a 5 year hiatus!!...I forget what resources are available to put 2 + 2 together!...I know the Browns, who Marshall Smith sold Garding Spot to in 1780, were mostly located outside of Salisbury, going towards Snow Hill. The Pennewells were also my ancestors. They had a small branch near Berlin, but mostly, they were in the Powellville/Snow Hill area. Your input gives me a starting point. Thanks again! Mike: Nice to know you are still out there. I am cleaning up my inbox today as I have been offline for a few months as my mother board died and has been longer than that since I actively pursued genealogy research. Do you know any more about Marshall Smith??????? Because his grandchildren ended up living with Littleton Smith in Putnam County, OH . . . I know there is a connection. Just wish I knew what????
