    1. Re: [LDR] finding a land grant in Maryland
    2. Teresa, Your hunch is right, that the actual grant document must be obtained at the MD Archives. The land grant documents have not been uploaded to _www.mdlandrec.net_ (http://www.mdlandrec.net) . They were seldom recorded as deeds. I say "seldom" because while I have never seen such a record in deeds, there may be some there that I just have not seen. What others have pointed to as available on _www.plats.net_ (http://www.plats.net) are related to the first-title land grants --listings with liber:page for grant documents --listings for Certificates of Survey (some were not actually patented from the original Certificate; some may have been resurveyed and even renamed before a patent issued from the Proprietary or State) --in many cases the listing for the Certificate of Survey has a link at far right to uploaded images from original or from microfilm --- but these are copies only of the Cert of Survey, not the grant/patent issued. No images have been uploaded for earlier than the 1680s. Since as suggested above, the grant may differ in minor or very major respects from the original Certificate of Survey, you will find the grant document necessary. One reason a grant may have issued later than the Certificate's date is lack of payment of the surveyor's fee or other fees. But another reason is if an owner of a neighboring tract objected that the survey included some already-claimed land (often termed an "elder survey") which may have been surveyed already but not necessarily already granted. So in your search on plats.net, don't limit yourself to the date you have, which would deter locating a resurvey. Also be aware that the MSA has often separated the CoS document from the grant documents where a tract was surveyed (say) in Somerset County but the location of the tract was set off to Worcester County when it was created. So where there is a possibility that a land tract's geopolitical history included traveling into newly formed Counties, do a search in the known locations. And since the persons who entered the data made many typographical errors, and the CoS document may spell a tract-name or owner-name variously, try spelling variations (such as "Walter" which could be a mistaken reading of "Waller" -- and vice-versa). Thanks for John Lyon, Mike Hitch and others who have taught so well how to navigate these property records. Good hunting, Judy ******************************* Teresa writes: Per the Deed that I transcribed, this particular piece, called Parish, was 100 acres, grant date of March 2, 1730 to a Thomas Waller of Somerset County in the Province of Maryland. It also states in the Deed that this grant is found in Land Office Liber PL N 8 folio 137. I tried to enter that into the Maryland Land records and got zilch. Tried the PL 8 in the unpatented listing in Maryland Land records and still nothing. I'd like get my hands on this but I think I'm having a bad case of operator error. Or is this a case of having to go to the Maryland Archives (cringe) and gain a copy there?
