Terry, The Lecates family had a number of farms east of Route 13 both north and south of Line Road (Boundary between) DE & MD. I think the Nichols farm or farms must have been in the same location but towards the southern direction. There were several intermarriages between the Lecates and Nichols families. Most had to do with the family of Jacob Nichols (born about 1844 in MD). I will send you a file offline that shows more info. The Nichols farm is very close to where Minos and Mary Gordy lived when they had Rosa Gordy. Both families, Wallers in particular, were involved with the Ellis family west of Delmar in Little Creek Hundred, as well as a little south towards Salisbury. I also am interested in anythng you know about Mary Nichols. My gr gr grandmother was a Theresa (Trecia?) Nichols, but I know nothing more and there are not a lot of the Nichols family around the area. You have confirmed what I had figured out by looking at the census'--yea!!! The genealogist who did some Waller research for us in the early 1990's had totally misspelled the LeCates name, and as I researched it years later, I figured the name was LeCates. The way I piece it together is that Rosa's mother was Mary A. Nichols m. Minos Gordy, had Rosa b. 11/12/1869 & a younger sister. Minos passed, Mary remarried to John W. Lecates and they had a son, then Mary died. The story handed down in our family was that Rosa was an orphan; I wonder whether she stayed with the LeCates family til her marriage to George Alfred Waller? Should I look for any Orphan's Court records? I thought Mary was buried in the Nichols cemetary as were Rosa and the first 2 children of George Alfred Waller & Rosa E., but the Mary A.E. Nichols on the cemetary list done by by Mike Hitch does not match her dates. I think I can find the Census records, but if you have that or other records documenting this situation, I would love to have a copy (eg. Mary m. John Lecates). Thanks so much--it is great to have this validated!! My father will so appreciate it. Lloyd- Thanks very much. If by offline, you mean to me directly, my email address is tbphillips@verizon.net. I am travelling, but I have at home the Beers 1868 Atlas of Delaware (Hundreds). I have all the pages photographed and have noticed that in the Little Creek Hundred there is/are LeCates near Bacon, but on the west side, but still east of Providence Road. The/a LeCates married in the early 1800s with the Ellis family (my first interest) and I always assumed it was that Lecates who was involved. I have discovered more recently that I should look a bit to the east of Rte. 13 (as you suggest), because quite a few Hearn(e)s had property in that area as well. I also had a high school friend in Delmar, Keith LeCates, but was not into family history enough to know that he might have been from a family I would be interested in. A Gordy married an early Ellis as well, but it was too tangential for me to look into yet. As to the Nichols family, besides my gr gr grandmother, I have kept a few other Nichols in my Ancestry "shoebox", assuming that because I could see so few, there was a high likelihood of finding a relationship. Interestingly, Theresa also was the gr grandmother of Dr. Wilbur Perce Ellis, M. D., of Laurel, DE, my childhood G. P. All of the references to Theresa Nichols, both before and after marriage, show her as living in Little Creek Hundred, but my impression is that she/they always lived close to the state line. Many of her children lived near Sharptown, just inside DE. One other link to the Nichols family just came up. While on vacation, I am transcribing some notes my sister made with a "cousin" from my parents generation, who lived in Laurel and was one of those people who had an old fashioned interest in family history. I don't know where her records are, but her knowledge was pretty extensive, at least according to the notes. According to Bernice (I think her name was Bernice Brock), Nelly Bly Ellis (you just have to love the names) married a Grady Nichols, but that must have been in the very early 20th cent.
