    3. Jean, Your assumptions are mostly correct. The archives built their card files from the data that they have available. If someone gives them a family bible, they note the relevant marriage, birth and death records and make up cards for them. If they review a land record and it mentions that John Smith had a daughter named Nora Jones (names just made up for an example) then a marraige record is set up on a card indicating that Norah Jones married ___ Jones and that it was before the date of the record. They note on the card where the record that the info was contained in is stored. If requested, they can then bring out the record so you can review it. It is a good idea to check the original record, because as in all things, people sometimes make mistakes. It provides a shortcut in researching names because it points you to relevant records. Unfortunately, it is best viewed (in my opinion) in person because of the possible variations in spelling etc. Also, I don't know if all of the records that the archives has have been added into the card file. THey have marraige, birth and death cards and they also have land record cards and names mentioned in genealogy books in the archives. The section I was searching was marked "after 1850." The cards had county, reference #, name of groom, name of bride, date of marriage, and source. I saw reference numbers of an orphans court proceeding which indicated there had been or was a marriage, (the one I saw had ante 1873 as the date of marriage, (meaning before 1873 when the orphans court proceeding occurred). On other cards I saw references to volumes of marriage records and licenses. One source said Bible notation and there was a reference number given. I don't know what to think of the reference number but I assume there were either microfilm or original records of the Bible notation at the Archives. Most of those that claimed a volume number as a reference, gave "return" as a source. In Maryland return means something similar to certificate; I am familiar with return of a birth in Md records. Unfortunately I didn't have time to actually follow-up on the reference numbers and see the orphans court proceeding, the Bible notation, or look at any of the marriage returns found in volumes. I guess that will mean another moderately lengthy trip for me. Maybe I will wait for the next conference. 3. Jack, You input was very interesting and I am sure that everyone will be pleased with knowing how they obtain some of their records. I am going to the Delaware Archives on Friday and hope to find some additional information on my family.
