I'm researching the history of the George Washington Covington store in Still Pond MD. (This G.W. is NOT Congressman George Washington Covington, who appears to be a 3rd cousin of mine removed by time, and who spent his life in Berlin and Snow Hill). In 1850 16-year old Covington was living in Baltimore with Mr and Mrs Daniel Haines, their daughter, and a Henry J Strandberg and his wife. He had been born 1834 in Middletown Del. area. His father was Nathaniel Covington and mother was Maria Covington. By 1840 a Nathaniel Covington is living in Kent Co. Md. He disappears from the 1850 census. Dead? In the same census 3 Haineses were living with Carl Strandberg (Henry's father) in Chestertown. Carl was a baker, age 74, and a prominent citizen whose son Charles went on to run a large hotel in town. In 1851, according to Covington's obit, he was working in Daniel Haines' store in Still Pond. At some point after that he satrted a drug store in Still Pond. By 1862 he bought property (where the existing store is located). By 1877 it appears he had built the existing general store. (Date of building is somewhat murky). Danl Haines in Balto was born in Delaware and was either 34 or 84 (bad writing). Wife was 35 and 3 year old girl makes me suspect that 84 is a transcription error. So, any clues on Haines-Covington-Strandberg connections?
