Hi Freda, I am interested in your Short surname as it pertains to my research of the West line in Sussex County. a year ago I bought the family bible of Joseph Burton West and Mary Catherine Steel. Within the pages of the bible were numerous clippings and greeting cards among which was a letter written by Francis Burgette Short, a Methodist Episcopal Minister living in Portland Oregon at the time(1918). The letter was one of condolence to Joseph Burton West and his wife on the loss of their son, Earl Clifton West, who died in the great influenza epidemic. Do you have any information regarding family connections between the Wests and the Shorts or were they just friends or neighbors? Hi Freda, Walt, and list, My grandfather was William Burton Smith b. 01 Feb. 1885 d. 1960. His parents were John Smith and Martha E. Bishop b. abt. 1862. Martha died when my grandfather was 2 or 3 years old. He and his 3 sisters, Maggie, Mamie, and Sally, were raised by Martha's parents, George T. Bishop b. Feb. 1845 and Mary A. ____ b. March 1840. John Smith remarried and moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. They were born in Worcester County, Maryland (as far as I can tell). Do any of these folks fit into anything you have found? Thanks.
