Georgia, actually they came from Worcestor County, Maryland probably sometime in 1787 to Washington Co. Georgia, Hancock Co. Georgia was carved out of Washington Co. Ga in the early 1790s. Archibald Smith Sr. [1736-1799] was the son of George Smith Sr. [Ca. 1708-1775] & Judith Turner [Ca. 1710-After 1761?]. He named several children in his Will in Hancock Co. Georgia, my ancestor his son Archibald Smith Jr. [ca. 1765-1824] and his wife Elizabeth Vaughan [1770-After 1838] left Hancock Co. Georgia about 1809 for St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, where he lived for several years until moving to St. Landry Parish, Louisiana and from there in about 1824 he moved to Texas with Elizabeth Vaughan and his youngest children, the four oldest children staying in Louisiana. It is possible that your Archibald Smith was the son of George W. Smith {ca. 1770-? ]who was one of the brothers of Archibald Smith Jr. or of one of his other brothers. How far is Telfair County, Georgia from Hancock Co. Georgia? Hope this helps give you some clues.Mike Hilton From: RussellHenderson@aol.comDate: Sat, 17 Jan 2009 08:46:44 -0500Subject: Archibald Smith of GeorgiaTo: jmh963@hotmail.com You recently posted the information below on LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS@rootsweb.com. My ancient ancestors were Henderson and McKendrick in Scotland (depending on whether they were recorded in English or Gaelic records). Several males married Smiths. Of particular interest to me is the wife (and ancestry) of my 3rd ggf, Randall Henderson (b. 1769 Argyll, Scotland - d.1807 Tattnall County, Georgia). She, Nancy C. Smith, was born possibly around 1769 and died in 1861 in Clinch County, Georgia. There is a multi-volume series of books regarding early settlers of Georgia: "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia," by Folks Huxford and after his death by the Huxford Genealogical Society. The scholarship of Judge Huxford has proved to be very reliable. In writing of my ancestor Nancy Henderson in "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume VII", by page 185-186 her brother is referred to as " ...Archibald Smith, an early and prominent citizen of Telfair County ... ". That has been my one clue over the years trying to find which of the many Archibald Smiths is this one and from that, who are the parents of Archibald and Nancy. I've got a lot of Archibald Smiths who it could be, but nothing definitive. Your entry seems to show that you know enough about that Archibald Smith that you know when he was born. Perhaps you know more and perhaps you can help me break through the brick wall of "Who are the parents of Nancy C. Smith with brother Archibald of Georgia?" Thanks for any help, Russell HendersonGainesville, FloridaHere is a transcript of a Power of Attorney from Archibald Smith [1736-1799] of Georgia {Hancock County} to sell part of Bacon Quarter.
