Just a simple guess from a simple mind- maybe Husband. Then it would read "Between Edmund Howard, Husband, and Margarett, his wife......and Henry Scholfield of Somerset County in ye Province afd (aforementioned?) of ye other part..." Quoting a deed of this date, “Between Edmund Howard H and Margarett his wife . . . . . in ye Province of Maryladn on ye one part Gent: and Henry Scholfield of Somerset County in ye Province afd of ye other Part. . . .” I presume that “Gent:” stands for Gentleman. But what would the “H” after a name stand for? I’ve read and reread and even traced out the letter and it is an H. Honorable perhaps? Any knowledge in this area would be greatly appreciated.
