    2. Walt wondered >>Tax lists for years between 1801 and 1803 show a tax distinction between old and young men. Does anyone know at what age that distinction is made?<< Walt, you did not say what County or State lists you are looking at. In general each State had its own legislation as to what was taxable and what information was to be gathered, and usually also legislated what was to be collectible by Counties. And in some places two or more different sets of tax assessments were made by Counties - in VA, typically one for specified personal property and the head tax, and one for real estate assessments. You put me in mind of the PA Septennial taxes, which listed men of Militia age. This could well be the distinction indicated in the lists of your query. But you would have to try to research the specific legislation. Good hunting, Judy</HTML>

    3. Hi, The tax lists I was referring to were of Dagsboro and Broad Creek Hundred in Sussex County, DE, where younger men were taxed at $200 and older men were taxed at $134. Thanks, Walt West Frostfreedet@aol.com wrote: > Walt wondered >>Tax lists for years between 1801 and 1803 show a tax > distinction between old and young men.
