    1. Re: [LDR] Indian parentage...question
    2. If the lady or ladies in question were living in the "English" community, I should think they would follow those customs. In Accomack and Northampton early court records, one finds instances of male Native Americans coming to court to get "Englished" names. In some Somerset records one can find persons of either gender (and who knows what sort of ancestry) whose race is listed as "chestnut". I had previously only considered chestnut to be either a type of tree or a particular horse color, and haven't a clue what was meant by whoever was writing these things, but it is interesting. As for the daughter's children in your example, I would rather have thought they would have their father's last name, not that of their grandfather. If they returned to the Native American community, they might have done anything about their names, but possibly would not have continued to use the "English" names. You might find some clues by searching Aminidab Haw. Elizabeth In a message dated 9/14/2010 10:25:58 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Can any one answer this for me? If in about 1750 if a white man married/lived with a Native American (Indian) and had children....and if his daughter had children, would his grandchildren take the mother's last name because she was considered Native American? If no one knows the answer, or if it varies according to tribe, could someone suggest a resource for me to check out? Thanks very much.
