    1. Re: [LDR] Indian parentage...question

    3. The name would be the father's name but if they divorced, the mother might change the name. I am Chickasaw and my g-g-grandfather was named Cyrus Harrison when born. His Mother divorced his dad and she changed his name to Harris.(She wanted nothing more to do with that man) He was the first governor of the Chickasaw Nation. From then on, the name of Harris has been the family name.....to this day.Names can change in Native Americans. A person might have a name as a child and then it can be changed as he grew to be a different person....and another name later in life. The oldest female gives the names to the family. That is the way in the Chickasaws. If in about 1750 if a white man married/lived with a Native American (Indian) and had children....and if his daughter had children, would his grandchildren take the mother's last name because she was considered Native American? If no one knows the answer, or if it varies according to tribe, could someone suggest a resource for me to check out? Thanks very much.
