    1. Re: [LDR] Whittington Bowen -- Clarifications (Tennant family)

Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I seem to have become befuddled following this thread on the Tennants as to when and where the suspicious Tennants sought were. So for what this is worth, out of the land records, it seems that two (probably) Anglican ministers appear in Worcester in the late 18th century, with no prior MD records under the name: 1. The Rev. Charles Tennant: Wo Cert 895: 1763. Rev. Charles Tennant survey of 10 ac FAIR MEADOW Wo Cert 79. 1765. Ditto, survey of 12 ac ADDITION TO FAIR MEADOW. Wo Deeds F:073. 27 Jan 1764. Edward Pettit et ux. Massey Pettit sold Charles Tennant ("clerk" [ = cleric]) 190 ac of PINDERS NEGLECT, 50 ac of VENTURE. Wo Deeds F:085. Same date, Charles Tennant sold 5 ac of PINDERS NEGLECT to Elisha Evans. In 1768, a Charles Tennant witnessed the Worcester will of John Houston, Sr. (MD Wills 36:377, Wo Wills JW3:176), who lived and had several properties on Broad Creek near modern Laurel, DE. 2. The Rev. William Mackey Tennant, who, I suppose, looks like his son, though I haven't looked for Charles Tennant's estate (there's no will, anyway): Wo Deeds H:643. 09 Aug 1771. William Mackey Tennant ("Minister of the Gospel') bought a lot in Snow Hill from John Bell, "where Bell now lives". Wo Deeds H:561. 27 Apr 1771. 198 ac [sic, as my data read, but might need re-check] of PINDERS NEGLECT, 50 ac of VENTURE, 10 ac of FAIR MEADOW, 12 ac of ADDITION TO FAIR MEADOW were deeded (gift) by William Mackey Tennant et ux. Ann Tennant to Ann Tennant and Martha Tennant Wo Deeds I:563. 25 Aug 1774. Interest in 198 ac of PINDERS NEGLECT, 50 ac of VENTURE, 10 ac of FAIR MEADOW, 12 ac of ADDITION TO FAIR MEADOW sold by David Rogers (physician of Fairfield, Connecticut) et ux. Martha Rogers (sister of William Mackey Tennant) to Isaac Murray (planter) Wo Deeds I:578. 20 Mar 1775. Interest in same sold by Simon Kollock et ux. Ann Kollock (so, inferred as sister of William Mackey Tennant) to Isaac Murray. Other than the Snow Hill lot, these tracts were just SE of Berlin. The spouse of Samuel Hopkins, a primary interest of mine, had a spouse whose given name was spelled "Tenot" in his 1741 Sussex Co. DE will. The only connection I have ever been able to concjecture for that spelling of her given name was "Tenant". However I never found a "Tenant" surname connection to support my conjecture. Maybe there's a better conjecture :-) Where DID the name come from in the above reference, and where did the Tenants (surname) live in the period (roughly) c1680-1710? Thanks for any fill in, if available. Joe Lake *************************************** QUESTIONS about POSTING GUIDELINES, SUBSCRIBING or UNSUBSCRIBING?
