I don't have a proof document that Richard Crockett married Elizabeth Venables but I think that is the case. The speculation probably arose since a son was named Winder Crockett. When we don't have a ready record of a wife's surname, most of us jump at the surname used as a child's given name, thinking that must be the wife's surname. In this case, it was the wife's mother's surname. The Winder family was very small and (to my knowledge) the only other Elizabeth Winder was the daughter of Capt. John Winder son of Lt. Col. John d. 1698. That Elizabeth Winder married Christopher Dashiell and Walter Jacobs. The only thing I could find connecting Crockett to Venables was Benjamin Venables and Robert Crockett were named as next of kin on the inventory of John Crockett on 15 July 1749 (40:414). Benjamin Venables was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Winder Venables and thus Elizabeth Venables' brother. Robert Crockett was the brother of the dec'd John, both being uncles of Richard Crockett d. 1765. My research on these families was conducted well over a decade ago and there might be something that has come to light since that time. I haven't looked. The above next of kin relationships were discernable; I have some nok in my own lines which I have never deciphered. The two which come immediately to mind, since I've toyed with them for a quarter century, are: How is Mary Waggaman nok to George Austin d. Worc. 1766? How are John Henry and Margaret Wilson nok to Capt. John West d. Som. 1716? And so it goes. We all just keep picking away at the clues, trying to identify our kith and kin. Becky Mary Waggaman was nee Woolford and the widow of Henry Waggaman; George's wife was Priscilla unknown. The greatest creditors were Levin and Mary Gale, so Mary wasn't a creditor. Incidentally, George named a son Harris Austin, who was given his paternal grandmother's surname. I see a relationship (but not at all what I would call close) between [Rev] John Henry and Margaret Wilson but neither to Capt. West who married Katherine Revell of Randall. ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, June 23, 2010 10:19:52 PM Subject: [LDR] Winder-Venables-Crockett I am trying to connect John Winder (d1698) with Joseph Venables Crockett (bc1765-1822). It's proven that John Winder's daughter, Elizabeth, married Joseph Venables. My connection is that their daughter, Elizabeth Venables married Richard Crockett (1708-1765). Their son, William (d1772) was the father of Joseph Venables Crockett. Joseph V. Crockett is named in Elizabeth Crockett's will probated 1794 as executor and heir (grandson). There was some speculation that Richard Crockett (1708-1765) married 1st Elizabeth Winder and 2nd Elizabeth Venables. Has anyone researched this connection?
