You say for "free". How do you access the "free" part? The site is sponsored by the Maryland Historical Society, and can be found at http://mdhs.mdsa.net/mhm/index.cfm What you will find on the site is the ability to access, for free, their "Maryland Historical Magazine" between the years 1906 and 2005. And here's the really good part: it was searchable! I found several items of interest in a couple searches, including a source document called "Commission Book 82", in which I found a fascinating listing of an ancestor, John Newbold of Somerset County, registering his 15 ton sloop "Catherine and Ann", "built in Accomac Virginia", with John Newbold noted as owner and master, on May 11, 1744 [this corroborated info obtained elsewhere, but added the ship's size and origin. Very cool. BTW --- are these Commission Books transcribed elsewhere?] Don't know how long this resource has been available. But I would suggest many on this List will find it very useful. It is free. I just tried it. But you have to give them your email address and then they want your snail info (looks like you can opt out of that, though). It looks to be nice if one has a fast computer and a fast connection but for those of us with old machines who live in the hinterlands, it is very slow maneuvering as in walking to the kitchen to refresh the iced tea while the search selection loads the appropriate volume. Thanks, Cree, for alerting the list to this resource.
