Alan, As for the first wife of Peter Waples, and mother of children John, William, Thomas and Joseph, see the will of John Disharoon, extracted in pertinent part below. John Disharoon of Worster [sic] County Stepney Parish, being about or near 78 years of age, made his will 19 March 1754, devising to my two grandchildren namely John Wapells and William one negro boy named Jack between them both and to their heirs and my will is that if please God that before my aforesaid grandchildren comes to age to receive this legacy that the first named above John Wapells shall receive the aforesaid negro Jack from my Executrix into his care untill his brother William comes to age also and that negro shall be their full part of my estate and shall claim no more; to my son in law Petter Wapels one shilling sterling and no more; to Thomas and Joseph Waples; (MD 29:229; Worc JW2:134). Peter Waples is a brother to my ancestress Mary who m. Joseph Derrickson and his first name unknown Disharoon wife is a sister to my ancestor William Disharoon. Peter's brother Paul lived in Baltimore Hundred of Somerset County, where he shows on the tax lists until 1739; that last year his next neighbor was Paul Thoroughgood. On the 1734 debt book for Somerset County, Paul Waples held 500 acres of Piney Point, 50 acres of Swamp in Fellowship and 200 acres of Abigail's Chance, all in Baltimore Hundred. I'm not familiar with these tracts and I suspect they are now in Sussex County, DE. Peter's will of 1785 does not mention a wife. Rufus Waples' Genealogy lists an unknown first wife; Margaret Rowe as second wife; children William, John, Benjamin, Joseph, and Nancy with the first wife; and Margaret, Littleton, Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, and Peter with Margaret Rowe. (Rufus was the great grandson of Peter.) Nancy Thoroughgood is given as the first wife in several genealogies. But I have not turned up any documents attesting to either marriage, or any Thoroughgood or Rowe documents that might hint at Thoroughgood or Rowe families in Sussex around 1700-1750 Nancy or Margaret might have belonged to. The birth dates and order of the children (except for Peter, from the 1850 census) are mostly unattested as well, so the order of the marriages seems speculative, as well as which mother the children belonged to. His daughters married Bartlett, Oliver, Hazzard, Lewis, Hall, and Waples. Hello fellow Listers, Searching for information on SLOOP. Uncertain as to where they lived in Maryland, but some family was also found in Fayette Co. PA. Mary Sloop Lape born 20 Nov 1789 somewhere in Maryland, and possibly a brother, John Sloop also born at the end of the 1700's in Maryland. Also connected in some way, Samuel Sloop born 1804 in PA. All were in Cincinnati Ohio between 1803-1812. I know there was a Michael Sloop in Maryland who served in the Rev War until he shot himself in the foot. But I haven't found much information on him and don't know if he was connected in any way. Any clues or suggestions much appreciated. Sandy
It is a fair statement that virtually all of the families in SW Delaware/SW Little Creek Hundred intermarried extensively and frequently from the last half of the 18th through the middle of the 19th century. After 1850 it only slowed due to population increase and transportation availability. In that period, however, I see through my family tree lots of intermarriage b/w the Wallers, Hearns, and Ellises. Less common are marriages with the Hastings family group near Delmar. I have a marriage in 1842 b/w Aaron H Calloway (b: c. 1817) to Grace Elizabeth Waller (b: c. 1817). I know of 3 children, Thomas, Jonathan & Stephen, by this union and Aaron seems to have had 2 others, Sarah & Luthur, by a previous marriage. Are these meaningful to you? If so, I have some more details. I also have the following Hastings, all born in Delaware (mostly Little Creek, but some in Laurel/Broad Creek Hundred): Mary A (Feb, 1854), Carrie Ellis (18 Apr 1902), Elihu P (30 June 1828), Elizabeth (c. 1912), Elsie Collins (c. 1898), George Darius (3 Apr 1866), Irine [sic] (c. 1907), James (c. 1907), James (c. 1768), James Carlton (c, 1895), Leon L (May 1895), Levin (c. 1894), Ruth (c. 1910), Sallie E (Oct 1892), Victor P (June, 1899). Again, if any are important to you, I can give more details. These may not all be related- I have Hastings on both sides of my family. Also, Beers 1868 Atlas shows locations of Hastings, Ellis, Calloway, Hearn, Waller, etc. family properties. My experience is that these are representative of the families' locations throughout the 19th century. Same is true for family property info you may find in 1877 Barren Creek District and Sharptown District maps. I mention this, because both sides of my family came from this area and throughout this period, marriages on both sides were strongly influenced by who their neighbors were. With a much anticipated break coming, I'm going to delve deeper into my Chandler line which now has cropped up in Worcester County, MD in the late 1700's and into at least 1800 when Custis Chandler, his wife Nancy and an alleged sister to Nancy who was named as Lydia Rodde (numerous variations on the spelling of both the first and last name of Lydia) sold 50 acres in Maryland that was located on St. Martins Neck for 40 dollars. I hope to figure who the father of the two daughters were as I presume they inherited the 50 acres from their father, or perhaps a doting uncle. It would be nice to nail down another one of these women that married into our Chandler line. >From thence it will be off to get a better handle on William and >Ursula Chandler, the parents of Custis and a heretofore unknown >Chandler, Solomon, >son of William and Ursula. The odd thing is that there were Chandler men with the name of William and Solomon in Accomack County, VA, but the timing is way off. I find no Chandlers with a William that would fit in with this particular group. And then there is the whole DNA thing that sorta, maybe fits us in with the Accomack County Chandlers. I WILL figure out these Chandlers! In the meantime, I'll enjoy a cup of hot cocoa, homemade cookies and Christmas carols on these cold nights. Teresa A. HI, I HAVE MY LINE BACK TO ELIJAH HASTINGS SR (1743-1843) BUT I HAVE NOT GOT HIS WIFE BETTY'S MAIDEN NAME NOR CAN I CONFIRM WHETHER HIS FATHER WAS JAMES AND IF OBEDIAH, JOSHUA ETC WERE HIS BROTHERS BUT I THINK SO. ELIJAH'S SON JONATHON MARRIED SALLIE CALLAWAY IN 1814. SALLIE WAS THE DAU. OF CLEMENT CALLAWAY THE SON OF MOSES CALLAWAY SHE WAS A SISTER OF JEMIMA WHO MARRIED JAMES HANES. I DON'T HAVE MUCH INFO ON THE HANES OR HAINS EXEPT WHAT I FOUND ONLINE IN FAMILY TREES AND WHAT I LEARNED TODAY ON THE LDR EARLIER. I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR INFO ON AN ARCHELUS HASTINGS WHO EVIDENTLY LIVED IN THE 1700S. I HAVE A FELTY HASTINGS WHO MARRIED MARTIN HASTINGS DAU. MARIA AND ELIJAH'S WILL SAID SOMETHING ABOUT HE WAS THE SON OF WINDER, SON OF ARCHELUS HASTINGS. SO THERE MUST HAVE BEEN AN EARLIER WINDER THEN THE 2 IN THE EARLY 1800S AND I CAN FIND NO RECORDS OF A ARCHELUS OLD ENOUGH TO BE FELTY'S ANCESTORS. ANY INFO ON FELTY S LINE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. AS FOR THE CALLAWAYS THEY INTERMARRIED WITH THE HASTINGS A LOT. IF YOU LOOK AT DEL SCANNED MARRIAGES YOU'LL SEE. I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR THE PARENTS OF NUTTER HASTING. NUTER'S SON THOMAS NUTTER HASTINGS MARRIED ELIZABETH HASTINGS THE DAU. OF MY GG GRANDFATHER FREDERICK HASTINGS SR. NUTTER MUST HAVE BEEN RELATED AS HE MOVED INTO MARYLAND BY THE 1870 CENSUS AND WAS LIVING NEAR FRED SR. I BELIEVE NUTTER MARRIED PRISCILLA CALLAWAY AS WELL. MOSES HASTINGS SON JOHN MARRIED ESTHER HASTINGS , THE SISTER OF FREDERICK HASTINGS SR. SEE WHAT I MEAN? ITS LIKE SHUFFLING A DECK OF CARDS ANY HELP SORTING THIS BUNCH WOULD BE A BLESSING. OH, AND SALLIE CALLAWAY HASTINGS AND JEMIMA CALLAWAY HANES HAD TWO SISTER. BETSY AND EUNICE. BETSY MARRIED A DAVIS SO I HEAR AND EUNICE ( UNICEY) MARRIED AN ELLIS. ANY IDEA WHICH DAVIS AND WHICH ELLIS? FRED HASTINGS MARRIED A GRACE DAVIS AND THEY MAY BE PART OF THE SAME DAVISES. YOU KNOW, FIRST COUSIN MAYBE..... GRACE'S DEATH CERT. IN MD LISTED HER FATHER AS DANIEL DAVIS AND MOTHER UNKNOWN. GOD BLESS YOU FOR ANY HELP IN SORTING THIS TANGLED WEB. Here's a definite I found on-line under Terms Used in 17th Century Wills: Yeoman: Yeoman in the plantagenet period, meant a knight's retainer. There were also Yeomen of the King's Chamber, who were minor court officials under the Chamberlain. At that period, there was a class of freemen called Franklins, and under the Tudors the name of yeoman gradually became attached to them. Broadley speaking they constituted a stratum of cultivators of the soil, either freeholders or tenants, who differd from the minor gentry more by way of life than by any economic category. The yeoman would put his own hand to work that the gentleman would employ servants to do, and his wife likewise; but many a young man of gentle and even armigerous family was styled yeoman, as long as he lived like one (i.e. until he inherited his father's estate). Below the yeoman class came the equally ill defined stratum of husbandman, whose landholding was normally smaller. The standing of the yeomanry is reflected in the later use of the word for the local volunteer force, mounted on their own horses, as distinct from the (infantry) militia. His son Theophilus Simonton (II) had died in 1751 in Lancaster co PA (empty Will packet), we think that is when the Simontons, Allisons and Thorntons realized they were not owners of the land they had been working. After Theophilus Simonton (I) died, 1754, all of the Simontons, Thorntons, most of the Allisons, moved to then Rowan co NC, now Iredell co NC. Mary Smith Simonton sued Patterson, cannot find documentation about this. Think they thought they were buying the land, but did not actually own it.
