The only book I have found on the Nicholites is Joseph Nichols and the Nicholites : A Look at the "New Quakers" of Maryland, Delaware, North and South Carolina by Kenneth Lane Carroll. Easton , MD: The Easton Publishing Company, 1962. The copy I saw was from the Wilmington (Delaware) Institute Free Library D289.6 C23 c.2. It is about 100 pages long and is mostly lists of names but does contain a bibliography which you should find helpful. There was a Virgil Turner in Betterton in the 1940s. I think there were two daughters, one named Jean. If I can dredge up a couple of more memories, I'll let you know. Yes, we are about 2 miles from the spot and I work at the Kent Co News, maybe 2 blocks from the library. Rennie Stavely told Kate that the family lore is that a house next to the graveyard was built where the MH was. So it's off to the land records, the 1930 era aerial photos and the state road plats. There's a bit of a Lost History of Quakers in northern Kent Co. Whack-boing! Below is the link to Old Fulton. http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html The site has a lot of old NY newspapers. Although it does not have newspapers outside of NY, I did find some articles and advertisement that related to people and places on the Eastern Shore. Since is it free, it is well worth the time. I can see why Jim liked the website since his research is in NY. Jim, thanks for providing the website to us. Below is a link to the newspapers covered by GenealogyBank. Quite extensive in comparison, but it does require a membership. http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/newspapers/sourcelist/full/ On Thu, Apr 25, 2013 at 3:52 PM, Lloyd Matthews <lloydwm@earthlink.net> wrote: > >From the note below I can't locate OldFulton.com on-line. Mike, I have subscribed to GenealogyBank.com for several years now. I highly recommend GenealogyBank.com!!! You cannot compare GenealogyBank.com to Ancestry.com. I subscribe to both. Both have their features and advantages. The BIG ADVANTAGE of Genealogy.com is the extensive access to newspaper articles, especially obituaries. Obituarites probably are the best source, next to Wills, from which to glean genealogical information. GenealogyBank.com has been invaluable in my research and well worth the price of subscription. That being noted, GenealogyBank.com does not include all newspapers from all areas. Plus, the sophistication of your search criteria is VERY important but this is NO different from Ancestry.com or any other genealogical site. In short, I have found GenealogyBank.com to be an invaluable research source!! Bruce Bruce L. I have found some great stuff in the newspapers on genealogybank.com. Examples: -- an account of the drowning of my husband's great-grand- uncle when he fell off his company boat on the coast of Ecuador in the middle of the night, while his wife slept nearby. He had moved there from Maryland in the mid1800s to start a shipping business. Before finding this article, I knew only his name. --an account of the trial of my grandfather's 19yo brother who shot and killed a man in his employer's railroad yard after mistaking him for a burglar. He was acquitted. This was evidently a deep, dark family secret, because I never heard of it before. -- a colorful account of a parade in downtown San Antonio in the 1930s in which my teen-aged father played a pioneer on a float. -- an ad from a newspaper in 1790s Norfolk, Virginia, in which an ancestor offered his services as an itinerant dentist. Not only did I not know that dentists travelled from place to place in those days, but I was also unaware that this ancestor had ever been a dentist. --an account of deaths in a yellow fever epidemic in Texas in the mid-1800s that established the cause of death of one ancestor and the existence of a previously unknown daughter of another. I had researched all these people on ancestry.com without finding this info. You have to keep in mind that newspaper articles often get picked up and reprinted far from their place of origin, so restricting your search to the area where your ancestor actually lived may be counterproductive. I found the Texas yellow fever article in a New Hampshire newspaper that picked it up from a New Orleans paper. One thing that may limit the usefulness of the site for 20th century research is a court case about newspapers' obligations to pay freelancers for articles online. A lot of newspapers chose to not put a lot of past issues online rather than sort out what they would owe freelancers for old articles. I learned this from a source independent of genealogybank, but I suspect that it has had an impact on the site. When I went back to try to order a copy of the article on my father's parade, the newspaper was no longer on the site, and I suspect this was the reason. All in all, I think genealogybank is definitely worth the money. GenealogyBank offers a lot more newspapers than Ancestry.com and has much better OCR search capabilities. Mike Abt a yr ago I picked up a subscription to GenealogyBank.com also from Ancestry. It has turned out to be useful for certain periods. They offer an obituary search from present back to 1977. It gives me hits abt 50% of the time. Most of my research is on the east coast (New England to VA) from the 1700s - 1900s. It is pretty good for the 1790s - 1910/1920. As least I haven't found any decent hits after those last yrs. The big metropolitan areas (NYC, Phil, Balto, DC, Bost) had many hits after I tweaked the search criteria several times. For me, it has been worth the fee. Then again, almost anything is more cost effective than driving from NC to MD and PA to dig through archives and courthouses. Though I still have to make those trips every couple of yrs for those hard to find records that can't be seen except by personal eye contact. Hope this has helped. I have used GenealogyBank.com for about 6 months now and am very disappointed. Most of my research in central U.S., 1860-current -- AND, upstate NY & PA vicinity 1750-current. The number of records in their data base is impressive but evidently are the wrong periods/areas for my search.
