Hi! My name is Irvin Wilkinson. I was born and raised in Cambridge on Maryland's Eastern Shore. My email is iwilk33@yahoo.com. I am searching for the parents of Jedidiah Gray. I have the following information: Jedidiah Gray, son of Joshua Gray and Levina Bailey from Sussex County, Delaware. Jedidiah was traced to Worcester County, Maryland. His DOB is 1750 and his DOD was 1798. Jed's wife was Eleanor (1749-1805). They had 4 children- Litteton Aldridge Gray (1769-1838), Rouse Gray (1776-1812), Anna Gray (1779-1856), and Thomas Gray (1795- 1833). All lived in Worcester County. I hope that someone out there may have some research to help me find Jed's parents. I thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide.
My name is Barbara McCrea from Westmoreland County, Virginia. My great-great grandparents Sarah Jane Taylor Jenkins and Littleton Francis Jenkins lived in Somerset County, Maryland and moved to Virginia sometime between 1850 and 1860. I am trying to find out anything I can on Sarah Jane Taylor's family. It is said she looked Native American. One elderly cousin told me his grandmother told him that Sarah Jane did not like to go out in public because people called her "a squaw". Her daughter, my great grandmother, had black hair and brown eyes, and my grandfather did also. Some records over here in Westmoreland County show her name as Jane and on some documents she is Sarah Jane. Littleton Jenkins was born around 1815 or 1818. Sarah Jane was a few years younger than he was. Are there any Native American families with the surname Taylor on the lower Delmarva Peninsula? Are any of you researching the Taylor or Jenkins families? My email address is rvrvue1890@yahoo.com Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.
4th group - S-Z surnames of testators (674 records) had been added to http://www.sampubco.com and that completed the Northampton County set. search engine is updated, too. W. David Samuelsen SAMPUBCO
Thanks to responders for the suggestions on finding a list of the 140 families Jost Hite brought to the Opequon area. So far I have been unable to find a source which lists all the families in the complete court case of Hite vs. Fairfax. Supposedly the full case is in the British Museum (Add. M.S. 15317) and the M.S. Division of the Library of Congress. I need to find out how to access those two sources. I continue to wonder about the people from N.J. who moved to Orange/Frederick Co., VA in the 1740s. Because the Van Meters, from whom Jost Hite purchased the grant, had moved from N.Y. to N.J., it seems possible that my N.J. families who began purchasing land in Orange and Frederick Counties beginning in 1748, were brought there by the Van Meters and Jost Hite. Johan Casper Stoever's records in Opequon indicate that in 1735 Jost Hite was the sponsor at the baptism of Zachariah Sickles, son of Jacob Sickles. It is the Sickles/Vansickles line that I am tracing. Later, I find both the Van Meters, Hites and my families in Hampshire County. In 1747 some of these people in N.J. had been indicted of high treason for rioting in disagreement with the Proprietors over quitrents and land titles. Many of them could have decided to move on with the Van Meters, rather than stay in East New Jersey paying high quit rents and possibly losing their land. I do not know if some of the N.J. men at that time had military duty in VA, and thus learned of the area. I am tracing this to find the origin and motivation of my ancestors who later show up in northern VA and MD. I especially enjoyed reading the diary of the Moravian missionaries who traveled in Opequon. Another very good description of Jost Hite and associated families can be found in "Historical Sketches - A Collection of Papers Prepared for the Historical Society of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania," Vol IV. I would appreciate any input from those researching this! Carolyn

Carolyn, If you look for Hopewell Meeting, or Quaker genealogy, or just search for Jost or Joist Hite on google, there are articles which list the families. They were mainly Quakers who came from NJ and PA. There is a wonderful book which Discusses all of the families and maps where they lived. It is called Pioneers of Old Frederick County, by Cecil O'Dell. He hired surveyors to go through all of the properties and tells how to find them on today's roads, and he thoroughly researched the families. You can also go to the library of Virginia website digital pages and find the original land patents. I know some of the families were Calvert, Milburn, Bruce, Parrell, Blackburn and Hollingsworth. Googling Hollingsworth should bring you some good information, also. I've spent a lot of time in microfilm looking for Calvert information and found a lot of good info that way. I borrowed the microfilm through my library from the Library of Virginia. Here is a good starter site: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~quakers/ Then click on Quaker meetings and look for Hopewell Opeckon. Good luck!
