I do have another suspect, one William Miles, born 26 Feb 1755, son of William Miles and Elizabeth Jewett. According to *Thirty-Four Families of Old Somerset Co., Maryland*, by Woodrow T. Why would one son remain in Maryland but the other children come to Virginia? There is also an Aron Miles in Middlesex County during the same time period as my William, but the only record I have for him is that witnessed a will in 1802, so I have not been able to determine his relationship to William. I am currently planning to go to the Library of Virginia in September to look at the tax lists for Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex Counties to try to determine when William may have arrived in Virginia. Do you know of any good online research tools or books for the Eastern Shore or Delaware, as I am currently unable to get up that way. 2. There is a will for Levin Miles in 1796 who mentions brothers Thomas and William and William is the executor. The will was probated in Somerset county - i have a note to that effect but not the text. Then I have this in my notes: 1798 Levin Miles heirs: Huntsmans Folly 288 acres; Addition 56 Acres, Addition to Tilgmans Luck , Hopewell Good Luck Tilghmans Chance 200 aces Chailes 445 acres. Unknown 69 acres total 770 acres $2300 (Somerset county) and this CHANCERY COURT (Chancery Papers) 1810/05/31 3557: Thomas Miles vs. John Cottman, John Miles, Attalanta Miles, Levin Miles, Milcah Miles, Edward Miles, George Robertson, Peter Waters, and John Bell. SO. Estate of Levin Miles. Accession No: 17,898-3557. MSA S512-3673 1/36/3/ Original papers for the probate and the actual will etc. might show whether Wm. William Miles, son of Stacey Miles and Jane Stockdale, was born about 1756 in Somerset County, MD. Stacey made his will in 1770 but it was not probated until 1785. In 1780 Stacey deeded to William the tract Huntsman's Folly which he had devised him in his will (337 acres). In 1787 William received a distribution on his father's estate. I see no activity by him other than what I just mentioned, so he could have removed elsewhere. Stacey also had a son Thomas Miles. I didn't look to see when William sold Huntsman's Folly but his brother Levin was assessed in 1783 with 208 acres of the tract and William himself still retained some: William Miles. 3. Those numbers are the MSA accession number where one finds the original record.  All one sees on line is the person's name, tract owned (if any) and what hundred of which county.  If you check Ruth Dryden's transcription, more information available, such as number of males and females in household.  The actual record indicates amount of horses and condition of the soil. >________________________________ > From: "tarantulac@aol.com" <tarantulac@aol.com> >To: lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com >Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 7:55 PM >Subject: [LDR] 1783 tax assessment question > > > >I found my fouth great-grandmother listed on the 1783 tax assessment as follows: >Usley Chandler  WO  Buckingham & worcester  pg 2  1/4/5/54 > >So it is her name, the county, the district, page number of the assessment, but what do the numbers after that mean? > >I'd appreciate any input on this.  It has me baffled. > >Thanks! > >Teresa A. 3. Christi-I don't have the answer, but do have a candidate who fits the parameters. Huntsmans Folly, pt, 135 acres. SO Great Annamessex p. 101.  Perhaps when William disposes of the remainder of the tract it will say now of [someplace other than Somerset County]. 3. My name is Christi Shea, and I am new to the list. I have been researching my Miles ancestors and have hit a brick wall with the origins of William Miles, who is my 6th great-grandfather. According to the 1810 census in Middlesex County, VA, William Miles was born before 1765. His will was probated in Middlesex in 1813. I have a deed for William Miles that indicates he purchased land in Middlesex in 1797, but at this point I don’t know if he had been in Middlesex for a while, or if this is when the family moved to Middlesex. However, I believe William was originally from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Eastern Shore of Maryland, or Delaware as in William’s 1827 account, there is a line item that says “Thomas Miles’s acceptance on the Eastern Shore due 12 July 1814”, and in an account found in a Middlesex County Chancery Cause, the estate made payments for passage and expenses to the Eastern Shore and Delaware on business of the estate. The family may have lived in Mathews County prior to moving to Middlesex, as his estate made payments to the Clerk of Mathews on multiple occassions. His family information is as follows: William Miles born before 1765, died 1813 in Middlesex County, VA 1st Wife unknown: she is not named in his will or accounts Son: John Aaron Miles, born abt 1784, died 1814, married 1) Judith Jackson 21 Dec 1807, 2) Sarah LNU Son: Thomas, born abt 1795, died 1832, married 1) Anna (Boss) Wake bef 1 Jan 1819, 2) Mary LNU Daugther: Sarah born abt 1781, married David Wilson Daughter: Jane S. born abt 1785, died 1851, married William Harrow 30 Dec 1801 Daughter: Elizabeth (Betsey) born abt 1791, died 1845, married Jeremiah Jackson 21 Jul 1809 Daughter: Ann (Nancy) born abt 1792, never married Daughter: Priscilla born 1795-1804, married 1) George Dudley 23 Mar 1820, 2) George Muse 30 Jun 1832 2nd Wife unknown Daughter: Maria born abt 1804, married 1) William S. Berry 18 Apr 1825, 2) Samuel Cole 18 Oct 1837 Daughter: Mary (Polley) born 1808, died abt 1824 I'm hoping someone may have information regarding this William Miles. Any assistance or direction you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully, Christi Shea

    2. I have seen children as young as 2 bonded out. In a message dated 8/7/2013 9:14:57 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, tarantulac@aol.com writes: As I have chipped away at the brick wall in my Chandler family lineage, I have come across something that has me perplexed. Per the Worcester County Register of Wills, Inventories, Volume 9, dated February 23, 1778, the deceased, William Chandler, has the following listed as Nearest of Kin: William Chandler, Ufamey Chandler. The administratrix for this estate is the deceased's wife: Ursula/Usley Chandler. She later gets called before the Orphans Court, about 1782, because she has not bonded her sons, Custis and Solomon Chandler (which begs the question: at what age were children normally bonded out?) A William Chandler was one of the persons who put up Bond for the estate of William Chandler. So could William and Ufamey be the parents of William? I found a William and Euphamey Chandler in the Miles Files but the dates do not jive at all. Any thoughts? Many thanks! Teresa A. 1. Re: [LDR] Md Archive records
    2. Cindy and David Steinhoff
    3. Good morning, I am a recent subscriber to this list and haven't delved back into its archives. So I am not aware of any prior discussion on the topic of the message below. Please excuse if I am repeating anything that has been discussed before. I use the Maryland State Archives site off and on, enough that I am fairly familiar with it, but not enough to call myself a regular user. My recollection from when I was last in the church records section of the Maryland State Archives site was that the section functioned as a finding aid to paper and microfilm records physically located in the Archives in Annapolis. I went back into the site last night and am certain that is still the case. Here's an example that demonstrates one of the ways I used the web site last evening. After moving about several different pages at random, I landed on this one: http://speccol.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/speccol/catalog/religion/cfm/dsp_churches.cfm . It's a good one to bookmark, as it gives a general explanation of what is contained in the church records section of the web site. It allows you to link to 3 other screens that point to church records by county, denomination, or church name. I tried all 3, but will use "county" as my example here, as follows: Clicking the link to counties gets me a list of all counties in Maryland. I chose Worcester, which takes me to a list of churches in that county. It's not complete, but is a list of churches for which the archives has information available in at least one format: online, paper, or microfilm. There are links to the church's own web site in some cases (though some of those links are dead) and a street address for the church. The other 2 pieces of information available here, though both are not always available for every church, are the number for records of any WPA survey done regarding the church and the record number for a finding aid to the church's own records available at the Archives. The WPA number is not linked to anything; you would need to use that to retrieve this record at the Archives. (And BTW, I was unsuccessful in using this number to search in the "Collection No. Search" box.) The column labeled "MSA Accession No." is the link to the finding aid for ch! urch records maintained at the Archives. Click on that number and you go to a brief description of the records for that church. There are up to 2 links included in this brief description, depending on formats available for that church at the Archives. One links to materials about that church physically in the Archives collection and another to microfilm records for that church housed at the Archives. Clicking on either of those links gets you to a list of what the archives owns, but the records themselves are not online. You use the information presented in the finding aid to request access to the microfilm or physical records at the Archives in Annapolis. Another important piece of information listed in the finding aid is any restrictions placed on the use of the records. I hope this helps. 1. [LDR] Kent County Md. Ancestors: Militia at Caulks Field Battle
    2. Craig ODonnell
    3. To continue the conversation with myself here <chuckle>. There are several lists of the militia, with some small differences, published in various sources. The people planning the reenactment are working on getting a "best possible" list, so what I have posted is not definitive. Sorry about the formatting. The message didn't leave here that way <chuckle>. I will arrange somehow for a correctly formatted list to be placed on the Web. Kevin Hemstock of the Kent County Friends group is working on the roster, trying to locate any further information on the participants (the officers and privates both: officers have probably left more clues because they were prominent citizens). Contact Kevin through the Friends website if any of these folks are your ancestors. To the extent possible we would like to find tombstones for participants too. Kevin tells me, for example, that Thomas Eunick wound up in Dorchester County where he died, burial spot unknown. So this truly is something that could involve all the Shore counties. We all expect it will take some time to get the word out, so that's why I'm giving out a heads up.0 Updates on what's discovered will be on the Friends website and there will be information in the Kent County News in the next couple months through to August 2014. See http://www.myeasternshoremd.com/news/kent_county for the main news page. *To contact the Friends of Kent County War of 1812 go to www.kentcounty1812* .org. -- ... 3. I was not able to respond to your email sooner because I have just returned from travelling. I have Taylors and Jenkins in my lines. My Taylors were from Accomac and Somerset Cos in the 1600s and early 1700s. The Jenkins were in Kent Co DE and Caroline Co MD until the early 1800s. I have no info on any of the Jenkins/Taylors that you mention, but if I can help you in any way, please let me know.
