    3. This is the first time I've been able to contribute to this list. I hope what I have is helpful. I am descended from John Hopkins, born 1706 in Somerset Co. Md., died 1786 in Mispillion Hundred. He married first Rachel Townsend; after Rachel's death c.1734 he married Jane Fisher. John's mother was Jane Cannon of Somerset Co. (c.1673-1735). Jane's parents were Stephen Cannon (b. 1640, Yorkshire(?); arrived in Va. 1646; d. 1708, Somerset Co.) and Judith Bloyce (1647-1744). Stephen and Judith only had daughters, but he had two brothers, Edward (1635-?) and Thomas (1637-1684). I haven't researched them, but they may be a good place to start. My ancestry.com tree is public (http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/40214368/family), and I'm always open to collaboration, especially on my Mispillion family! Cheers, Tom McCuin Alexandria, Va. 1. [LDR] Witness to a will: Any age implications?
    2. In perusing the Sussex County wills on Ancestry.com, I found Joseph Huston (presumed son of my Paris Huston) as a witness to the will of Daniel Baker on 21 March 1810. According to later censuses (the 1850 and 1860 censuses had Joseph being born in 1800) and inferences from other facts, I had calculated that Joseph had been born between 1794 and 1800. If that were true, then Joseph would have been between ten and sixteen years of age when he witnessed the Baker will in 1810. Clearly, he wouldn't have been ten, but could he have been sixteen (or eighteen) when he witnessed the will? Or would he have had to have been twenty-one? If anyone knows if there were "age rules" on witnessing wills, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thank you! Andrew H.

    3. Just passing along, FYI (more information is at the link below)... Book Review: Without Indentures: Index to White Slave Children in Colonial Court Records (Maryland and Virginia). By Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D. Published by Genealogical Publ. Co., 2013. 283 pages. Reviewed in Eastman's e-newsletter: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2013/10/book-review-without-indentures-index-to-white-slave-children-in-colonial-court-records-maryland-and-.html One example cited in the review is from Somerset County, Md., making it seem relevant to this list. A brief excerpt from the review: "The children were kidnapped. "Indentures were contracts of servitude between a purchaser of ship’s passage for an immigrant who worked off the price with years of unpaid work duty, earning only freedom after a certain number of years. Children who arrived by ship into colonial ports alone and without indentures were brought into the courts and sentenced to years of bondage duty. "Dr. Phillips has compiled an index of over 5000 names of children collected from the Court Order Books of colonial Maryland and Virginia."

    2. Nancy, it would be helpful for readers not to duplicate what you already have done. What have you found so far (Census? Estate records? Land records? Court records? Marriage records of children? Death records? Gravesites? Obituaries?), and can you hint what in particular you are looking for? What exactly do you mean to specify by saying "early family" -- do you mean eldest children or do you mean ancestry of each person in this couple? Is this query on behalf of a client? 3. Anne, I believe it was 1898 that death certificates were required in all counties; Baltimore was doing it since around 1875 I think.  To my recollection the form always had a place for parents' names but I have not had occasion to see the very earliest forms.  The problem is, that this information was not always filled in or the provider did not know. >________________________________ > >Does anyone know the year in which Maryland began to put the parents of the deceased on death certificates?  Information on a 1930 death certificate shows parents and where each was born.  I have asked the Archives, but no reply yet. > > >Anne Harris > >
