Need help from someone who knows about DNA testing. I am so new at this that I do not understand many of the conversations that you all are having. How do I go about finding the nationality of my maternal grandfather's maternal grandmother? What kind of test kit do I order. All persons are deceased. The line goes like this: my great-great grandmother..... my great grandmother ...... my grandfather ....... my mother..... and then me. Your recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Barbara Mc. On Tuesday, January 14, 2014 3:12 PM, Kathleen Ingram <kathlingram45@gmail.com> wrote: Patricia Before you decide what test you want to test your maternal side, ask yourself what you want to learn from the test. Your mother's mtDNA itself will NOT tell you a whole lot genealogically. MtDNA as many know is very deep ancestry. I have tested the whole thing which is called FGS ( Full genome sequence) and I know what I knew going into that test..that my oldest female to female to female only line goes to Cork c. 1840. I do know now one other family who matches me exactly BUT we are NOT cousin in genealogical time. We know THAT because we have tested ( each family) 10-12 of us with little to no "cousin matches". I f you do NOT really care to know your mother's mtDNA haplogroup then since you have already tested at Family Tree DNA I would test the Family Finder. You would then get a great deal of cousin matches back and can put some things together from that. If you DID want to know your mtDNA ( Which is the same as your mother's) as well as testing Family Finder then the cheapest test is that from 23andme. It will show Y DNA and mtDNA and autosomal matches ( at least twice as many as FTDNA) for the same $99. I have tested 13 of my family there. I will tell you that some of those kits I got for free from the very nice many who shares my mtDNA AND the fact that I was a Beta Tester there over 4 years ago. A great test and no, they are not in danger of not being in the business, just under FDNAscrutiny for the health part. There is also AncestryDNA which again only tests the autosomal part for that $99. ( I just went and double checked my cousins to be sure) My feeling is that 23andme is #1 and FTDNA is #2 best test. FTDNA is trying really hard to do just as well and doing a good job. You can always e-mail me privately with questions.. Hi Norah! I've been to the cemetery at Mt. Olivet Church, which is outside of Snow Hill, near the Coulbourne District (both and west of Snow Hill). My PopPop's infant sister is buried in that cemetery so I cruised down last fall for a look. I only know that she is buried there because it was recorded on her death certificate. It is a lovely small church, located on Mt Olive Church Road, just off of Route 12. There are several stones that are small with no inscriptions that I could discern. There are several other stones, well marked and readable, with varying dates from the 1900's and, if memory serves me right, the late 1800's. I contacted the pastor and spoke with his wife. There are some cemetery records but they have apparently walked away or been misfiled or mislaid. So basically what you see in the cemetery is what you get. I don't know if anyone has ever walked the cemetery and transcribed the stones that are legible. I believe there were some Shockley's buried there but who and when, I do not recall. You people on this list seem to know a lot about the DNA testing so maybe you can help me. We are fairly new to DNA and FamilyFinder and do not understand how it works. I have had DNA testing for my Dad (ROBISON) and a cousin from my mothers side (COX) done. I am looking to do the test for my mother, is it the mtDNA test ??? or what test should I do and shall I include FamilyFinder also? As you can see our knowledge of this is minimal. Elizabeth When I asked Vern Skinner ( who had done my Manlove/Townsend/Maloney for me..FOR the Maloney/Jones/Carrow line ) about it, he said "from information that I supplied to MK Miles".He had actually forgotten and then went and looked. He said there is a lot more so I asked him to look for Susanna. We are pretty sure that Susanna is a Manlove as her only 2 sons are named Manuel Meloney and William ( after the Meloney Grandfather). Also WIlliam Maloney the Grandfather or Uncle of Manuel and William Meloney/Maloney witnessed several deeds and had one land transaction with Mark Manlove. So Susanna COULD be a daughter of Mark and a sister or granddaughter to Manuel( Emanuel) Maloney. Others have the family pretty mixed up but Vern has always done great work for me. Better and cheaper than I could drive to DPA and get. I get confused with the films and the DPA folks get tired of helping me I think. Another day another topic for me..I stumbled across the Miles Files and found lots of updates. My 6th great Great GM Susanna Manlove was there with 3 husbands. Joseph Hickman, William Townsend and Richard Meloney/Maloney. Did not know about #1 and found that 2 of the Townsends married and had more Townsends. Which is surely why I get so many Townsend cousin matches. I asked Vern Skinner who did that part for me and he said it is good. The Sussex County Orphan's Court Proceedings, which he abstracted are considered good and recommended by the DPA. So Miles Files were updated 10/2103. Do they do that often? Guess I need to look. My original DAR Patriot William Keys and many others signed up in Christiana, they called it Christeen Bridge. His Regiment served with the Maryland troops and he was away until 1783. The MD and DE troops served at Camp Ashley River opposite Charleston SC to keep the British away from the city. They were ill clothed and fed and supposedly only duty soldiers could wear clothes, they passed them around. My John Carrow served in the MD Militia in 1776 and then donated corn inn Duck Creek DE. They lived in both places. He was harder to prove for that reason but shows both MD and DE. I can wear both pins because of that. The Miles Files are updated fairly frequently, and are generally quite accurate. Of course, with all the people marrying people to whom they are rather closely related (many of whom have the same first names as well), errors are always possible. Sometimes, information is submitted to Barry and MK from persons who have done extensive research of their own. Elizabeth In a message dated 1/14/2014 7:19:40 A.M. Joan I do not see ANY John Bennett's listed from Delaware. All that means is that none of his descendants have ever attempted to "prove" their relationship to him.Caleb and Joseph is all there are. They are from New Castle. If you know what he did and have a paper trail to him it is not a problem. I could send you the practice PDF and you could play with it. None of my ancestors that I proved in the DAR were from Virginia, just Delaware and Pennsylvania. No burned courthouses there. Joan, I proved ALL 5 of my ancestors as New Patriots. It is not so difficult. You find their service and prove yourself back to them. They do not need to have been a soldier, just to have done something to support the new nation. Like: jury duty, serve in an office( like constable), donate goods or money to the cause, even pay certain taxes to support the war effort. Unless they were a British sympathizer it is not hard. I even have one ancestor who had dealing with the British. Jonas Edenfield who was called the "Pirate of Bombay Hook" for selling beef and rum to the British Men O' War off the Delaware coast. He supposedly rowed around the creeks doing that. Hopefully they can't throw me out of the DAR For Jonas. NORAH, I HAVE SOME RELATIVES THAT STOPPED OFF IN THE SNOW HILL AREA ON THEIR WAY FROM ACCOMACK TO SUSSEX COUNTY. THERE ARE TOWNSENDS AND LOTS OF SHOCKLEYS A BIT NORTH OF SNOW HILL. I DON'T HAVE THEM IN MY TREE, BUT THEY ARE ALL OVER THE RECORDS. I BELIEVE SNOW HILL WAS THE PO ADDRESS FOR A REALLY LARGE AREA, IF THAT AFFECTS THE RECORDED LOCATION AT ALL FOR THE TIME YOU ARE LOOKING AT. IS THERE SOMETHING SPECIFIC I CAN KEEP MY EYE OUT FOR? WHAT ARE THE DATES FOR SAMPSON? I TOO WOULD LOVE TO SEE MT. OLIVET'S CEMETERY'S RECORDS! A FEW OF THE MIGRATING FAMILIES STOPPED IN THE MANOKIN AREA TOO. JD
Lol--the 1778 roster of loyalty oath signees for Caroline County has not one of my Nicholite (or otherwise Methodist--pacifist, anyway) Nichol line--though my Nichols cousins are well-represented! No worries; I have plenty of Revolutionary vets in other quarters... ONLY POSSIBLE SOURCE I CAN THINK OF WOULD BE THE CEMETERY RECORDS AND/OR THE HUDSON TATNALL LISTING. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THEM, SEND ME THE NAMES AND I WILL LOOK. AND DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS AS TO WHO MIGHT HAVE THE CHURCH RECORDS FOR MT OLIVET CHURCH ON SNOW HILL ROAD, ALMOST TO SNOW HILL? I WOULD LIKE TO FIND THE CEMETERY RECORDS . SOMEBODY HAS TO KNOW WHAT PLOTS ARE OCCUPIED OR OWNED. MY GGGRANDPARENTS ARE BURIED THERE IN THE BACK AND THE WOOD MARKERS ARE GONE SINCE THE 1920'S OR SO. THEY DISAPPEARED OFF THE CENSUS AFTER 1880. HE WAS SAMPSON C. SHOCKLEY AND I WAS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY HIS PARENTS. IF THERE WERE SHOCKLEYS BURIED IN THE SAME AREA IT MIGHT BE A CLUE. ANY INFO WOULD BE WELCOME. Elizabeth Yes I see the DAR Is doing that. I should read up on it as I am the Registrar for my Chapter. Not sure how it would work and only the Y I would think, at least for now. As you said, still need a man for some things, Y testing is one.
