    3. Anne, I can't quote you any references; I just know from 40 years of researching local history.  As to specific locations for properties, only two people on this list could help you and one hasn't been on the list for a long time.  Your thought on the Wallers' location is still accurate.  Mardela is in Stepney Parish.  Old Spring Hill Church, which is right on Route 50 in Hebron, was a chapel of ease for the parish, so that would be where they went after c1771.  There was a previous structure for that congregation in that locale, which was served by the Rev. Alexander Adams during his tenure as Rector from 1704 until his death in 1768 or 9  I don't remember offhand.  Usually, one rector served a whole parish and went from the main church to the chapels of ease, with the records being kept at the main church, which was St. Bart's or Old Green Hill as we locals call it. 3. Anne, Have you beeen to plats.net that the State of Maryland maintains? I find 23 records of land in Worcester County, owned by various Wallers --namely a Nathaniel Waller, and a Thomas Sr. and Thomas Jr Waller. Some of the records contain scans that can be read online, or downloaded and saved. I just took a sample of one of these records. This was in 1748, Thomas Waller, and part of the description specified that it was "on the Borders", wherever that is. If you haven't used plats.net before, here's the URL: http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagser/s1500/s1529/html/0000.html Then choose the county. On that page, select [Name of County] County Land Survey, Subdivision, and Condominium Plats. This should be the top selection. On the next page, select Advanced Search. From there, you can input the surname (or part of it), or you could also input part of the name of a plantation or tract. Then look for those records that have Direct scans. Records that can't be read online (no scans) can be ordered. There used to be a password, but it hasn't asked me for it any time in the last couple of years. But the password was never a secret: plato. 3. Hi, Recently you outlined an area of Stepney Parish for me upon my question. As I look at a 1742 map of the peninsula (John C Lyon's map), I see that would cover a pretty large area. It looks like it would include the Green Hill Church (now St Bartholomew), MD, and if you are correct, to Laurel, Delaware. Do you have any maps or descriptive references stating this geographical designation by any chance? I have supposed ancestors [Waller] who had property named both Stepney & Parish and do not know where to begin how to find those actual property pieces, as well as most of their children of the 1700's+ were listed in the Stepney Parish Register (Ruth Dryden). It is confusing because I thought my familiy's land was around the MD/DEL line between today's Mardela & Delmar, which seems a bit far from old Green Hill Church, if that is where Stepney Parish Records came from. I would be grateful for any assistance on this. 3. Anne, In the 1870 Census most of the Lecates/Legates families were listed as Legates. There were 6 Lecates and 21 Legates listed in all Census. All were in Delaware and Maryland. All on those in southern Sussex County were listed as Legates. It was probably the Census takers. After that they divided in into Lecates and Legates but some people used both over the years. I answered the other questions about Rosa Gordy in a previous note. If you have questions on a specific person, I can probably help. Mary Nichols Gordy married John Watson Lecates on 2/5/1875 in Wicomico Co, MD. Mary had Isaac M Lecates in 1878 in MD. She is not shown in the 1880 Census and therefore died between 1878 and 1880. Rosa is shown with John Watson Lecates in 1880. Rosa married George A Waller on 12/11/1889 in Delmar, Sussex Co, DE. They had a son Uriel W Waller in 11/1892 in MD. It appears that when a son (George W Waller) was born in 5/1900 that Rosa died. I have Rosa's death as May 13, 1900. I have a Family Tree for LeCates on ancestry.com. I UNDERSTAND MT OLIVET HAS BEEN DIFFERENT DENOMINATIONS OVER THE YEARS BUT I WOULD THINK THE OWNERS OF CEMETERY PLOTS RECORDS SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH THE CHURCH. BY THE TIME I RETIRED AT AGE 57 I WASN'T ALLOWED TO DRIVE ANYMORE BECAUSE OF BEING LEGALLY BLIND AND AS SOON AS MY HUSBAND RETIRED WE MOVED UP HERE TO PA SO I NEVER GOT MUCH CHANCE TO HAVE SOMEONE DRIVE ME AROUND. MY SISTER IN DELMAR TOOK ME DOWN THERE ONCE TO THE COURTHOUSE AND TO SEE FAY BROOKS AT THE LIBRARY (NOW DECEASED). FAY WAS AN AWESOME GENEALOGIST. It is a lovely small church, located on Mt Olive Church Road, just off of Route 12. There are several stones that are small with no inscriptions that I could discern. There are several other stones, well marked and readable, with varying dates from the 1900's and, if memory serves me right, the late 1800's. I contacted the pastor and spoke with his wife. There are some cemetery records but they have apparently walked away or been misfiled or mislaid. So basically what you see in the cemetery is what you get. I don't know if anyone has ever walked the cemetery and transcribed the stones that are legible. I believe there were some Shockley's buried there but who and when, I do not recall. 1. Re: [LDR] Taxes in 1706
    2. Jane McDonnell
    3. Could it have to do with Queen Anne's County, since he specifically referred to "Queen" and the county was formed in 1706? I don't know about the four years, but Maryland was the first proprietary colony, owned by an individual. Taxes were paid to him, for administration of the colony, and not to the King. England made its colonial profits primarily by trade taxes. The concept/collection of taxes fluctuated constantly in the colonies. Perhaps because Maryland was established as a Catholic refuge there were specific agreements about exemption when the Anglican church was made official? Also when the puritans took over and had nothing to do with the Anglicans or Catholics, or when the Quakers were dominant there may have been alternate tax laws. Also in some colonies, like New York, settlers were exempt for a number of years (10, I believe, in NY) and I assume that meant for products as well as poll taxes. JD

    3. Hi all, I am trying to track down any evidence to support a comment a local bigwig made about Chestertown. He was a little vague, but in essence the assertion was that the early residents, lets say prior to 1730, had to pay no taxes "to the queen" the first four years they were in Maryland. I think this is bull. But at the moment I'm digging for sources. Later I will ask him for a cite. Thanks -- COD Whack-boing!
