!In my early genealogical research, I found reference to a "Fooks" Book that is supposed to be in a library on the Eastern Shore or in Washington DC, (maybe the DAR?), but was missing. It is supposed to have Dykes/Dikes genealogy included in it. Does anyone know anything about this book? Thanks for any help anyone can give me! Laurie Dykes-Martinez
I assume the book you are referring to is "Fooks Family" by Herbert C. Fooks. It was reprinted in 2001 by the Lower Delmarva Genealogical Socity. "The Lower Delmarva Genealogical Socity has had an index done and it is included in this book." I have a copy of this book. Looking for descendants of my gg grandfather Sothey KING of Delaware. His first name is often spelled as "Southy" but he signed it "Sothey". Will be willing to share the info that I have on this family which is through my maternal line from Sussex Co., DE Thank you.. Michelle Burris Kenerly (originally from Bridgeville, DE).
Jim Thank you very much. You have made my day! DE death cert for James H Brown gives date of death as 20 Jun 1898. While I think this is "our" Mary, I feel very sure this is the right James H Brown. Elaine Thank you for finding my errors. You are correct that Nancy married James HOPKINS. Thomas Hearne FOOKS died in 1863 not 1843. He served in the 6th DE Infantry from Nov 1863 until Sep 1863. About Julia and Mary Ann - as for a few other members of the family, I have found independent proof that Mary Ann was married to Hiram H. JAMES and Lot RAWLINS: 1) will of Thomas FOOKS, Sr. (1853) naming "my daughter Mary James, wife of Hiram James; 2) estate of William JAMES (1844-45), brother of Hiram and husband of Sally FOOKS, mentions Mary Ann frequently; 3) will of Sallie HEARNE Fooks (1854) lists Mary Ann, widow of Hiram H. JAMES; 4.) will of Priscilla W. FOOKS (1862) lists Mary A. RAWLINS 5) De Marriage Record (Ancestry database) marriage of Mary Ann JAMES to Lot RAWLINS, 15 Dec 1857 6. Sussex County, De Marriages (Ancestry database) marriage of Mary Ann FOOKS to Hiram H JAMES, 17 Nov 1835 Mary Ann could have married a 3 rd time as she was in her 40’s when lot died but I have pursued that marriage. Julia is not listed in the wills of her parents. My death date for Julia needs verification. Hearne, Brief History , p 221 (in my edition) . Quote of Prof. James Henry Morgan, Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA.: [no date given] … through Sally Hearne and Thomas Fooks, and through their daughter Mary, who was my grandmother, and who, with her twin sister Julia A., was born Sept. 25, 1815. Jim, Do you have any information on Charles Rawlins, b. 1824 who married Sabra Hall? Their children were: David Lot Rawlins, b. 1850, d. 1884; Sallie Rawlins, b. 1852; Charles Henry Rawlins, b. 1856; and Edward Rawlins, b. 1862. They lived in Bridgeville, DE. I am mostly interested in the Hall side of the family. LeeAnn: Mary's dates are 1815-1890, while James H Brown's are 1816-1898 from tombstones >From DE death certs, there is a Mary Brown in Seaford 100 who died 19 Nov 1890. DE death cert for James H Brown gives date of death as 20 Jun 1898. While I think this is "our" Mary, I feel very sure this is the right James H Brown. I come at this family group from the LOT RAWLINS (30 Jun 1787-7 Feb 1861) side. Mary Fooks was Lot's third wife. As noted above, Mary first married Hiram James of Concord. Then she married Lot. After Lot's death in 1861, Mary married widower James H Brown (1816-1898) of Seaford. Much has been independently verified. The shooting occurred on 26 Jul 1862. The gist of the story is that Sarah (age16) was home from boarding school and visiting Uncle Isaac. Priscilla, who the newspapers say had some history mental instability, found the gun in Isaac's unlocked desk. She shot Sarah and then herself 3 times. Sarah survived but Priscilla died 5 days later after making a will. I have looked for, but not found, a Coroners Inquest. The incident does not appear in any of the family histories. You mentioned that Sarah died in a mental hospital in Pa. From my research that would seem to be Norristown State Hospital which was in existence at the time. Do you know if her records might be available? I am taking a genealogy writing course at OLLI at Duke and am writing about these people and this incident. I have done as much in depth research as I can from NC with a few trips to DE. If you wish I will forward my electronic files to you off list. Just let me know what you want. I have the newspaper articles, wills and estates, and a few death certificates as well as census information. I would appreciate anything any one can contribute to my project. At first it seemed like an interesting but tragic as I do more research these people are coming alive. My husband is descended from Sally FOOKS James Jones' daughter Lucinda A. JAMES. Thanks for all this information. I have a few questions where my database has something different. You're much more current on this family line than I am but before re-entering your data just want to be sure I'm understanding. JAMES. Henry Washington Cottingham and Sarah Priscilla Bacon were 1st cousins. Henry's mother Levenia C. Fooks and Sarah's mother Jane "Jincy" Fooks were sisters. Their parents were Thomas H. Fooks, Sr. and Sarah "Sally" Hearn(e). I did not know that Priscilla W. Fooks shot her niece. That's very interesting. I have Priscilla W. Fooks as Priscilla Ella Fooks born 17 September 1826 in Delaware and died 31 July 1862, but I haven't found her death record. Has anyone found it? I think she married a Hudson who was a Dr., but I don't know his first name as I haven't worked on this particular Fooks much. I have that they had a son Thomas Hudson. Can you shed any light on this Jim Moore? Thank you! Lavinia was my 2nd cousin (5x removed). I continue to watch the pattern of this family, some remained in Worcester Co, Md and many were in Delaware. So even though Lavinia is a bit 'removed,' it is useful to see where the dots on the map land. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Moore Sent: Saturday, February 08, 2014 12:41 PM To: lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LDR] Subject: FOOKS, Sussex Co., DE 1862 Sarah Elizabeth Cottingham (13 Sep 1839--18 Jan 1918) married Henry White Baker 22 Feb 1866. Elaine This family is fascinating. My husband (the Fooks descendant) want to know about the bordello piano player. I have more Priscilla's as well and would like to explore that in the future. Terri I have Henry's parents as Alfred COTTINGHAM (1808-1871) and Lavinia FOOKS (1812-1892). Is this correct? I also have a good number of siblings and entries from the Philadelphia City Directories.. Let me know if you want any of this.
