    3. I can understand. Rootsweb recently has had some issues. I myself was unsubscribed from the list twice recently. This list a few years ago, was quite active. Yes, in summertime there are many other areas that can occupy our time. All is well in lower slower :) Mike ________________________________ From: Gerry Tostenson via <lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com> To: lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 8, 2014 12:10 PM Subject: [LDR] Being Quiet This is the only list that I am on that seems to worry when there are no postings for awhile. 3. You could check with the Laurel Library. It's the town next to it. I know they have a large genealogy section encompassing the 2nd floor of the library. I'm not sure of the contents. I know they have newspapers on microfilm.  Good luck Mike Adkins ________________________________ From: ARHGenealogy via <lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com> To: lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 8, 2014 12:36 PM Subject: [LDR] Seaford/Sussex County Newspapers 1890-1910 Hello all, Norah's e-mail reminded me that I wanted to ask a question, so here it is:  Does anyone know if there was a newspaper in Seaford during the period  1890-1910, and if so, where copies (or microfilms) would be housed? If  there wasn't a newspaper in Seaford, what paper would have been nearest and/or  most likely to carry Seaford news during that period? Many thanks for any direction! 1. Re: [LDR] tax lists for sussex county DE 1776-1780
    2. ARHGenealogy via
    3. Paula, I believe there are books that have transcriptions of selected of the tax lists, but I don't know of one that is anywhere near comprehensive. I recall that the Delaware Genealogical Society had undertaken a project to transcribe the lists, but I don't know how far it has gotten. The tax lists are housed on rolls of microfilm at the DE Archives. I went through all the rolls up until about 1850 and indexed them three or four years ago. There are very few lists available prior to 1782 for Sussex County. Here is a list of all of them (I found): 4535 000 000 Board of Assessments, Sussex County Roll 001 Entry: 131701 1767 Delinquent List 1770 Lewes & Rehoboth Hd. 1773 Indian River Hd. and Angola Hd. 1774 Broadkill, Cedar Creek, Indian River, Lewes & Rehoboth 1777 General List No date - c. 1780 - North West Fork Hd. 4535 000 000 Board of Assessments, Sussex County Roll 002 Entry 131702 1780 Baltimore Hundred - Delinquent 1780 Broad Creek Hundred - Delinquent 1781 Delinquent List 1781 Lewes & Rehoboth Delinquents The above is ALL of the pre-1782 lists I found. If you can't find any printed material, it may be worth your while to order Rolls 1 and 2 from the Archives, and then take them to a local library with a microfilm reader and go through them. That's what I did--they can be very helpful, and are really fascinating (though hard on the eyes!). I transcribed the Broad Creek portion of the "1777 General List" and can tell you there is a William Brown, but no James Brown. Good luck! Andrew Huston In a message dated 7/26/2014 9:26:55 P.M. They had 7 children that you can see on my Ancestry page. I'm up in the middle of the night- had to walk the dog and need to get back to sleep, so I don't want to get too worked up writing to you about the Ralphs. I can tell you that the Ralphs have been in the area since the 1600s, living in two clusters, separated by about 5 miles. One cluster was/(is?) located between the Jersey Road and Spring Hill Road, about two miles south of the MD-DE line. The other one I know more about. They lived in the area around St. Marks Episcopal Church, where Providence Church Road joins Susan Beach Road, about 3 miles north of the state line. Although I never heard it referred to as such, the area just north of St Marks is noted on the ADC map of Sussex County as "Ralphs". As has been the case for other families in the area, they have spread generally northward, towards Laurel & Bethel, DE. There is a cemetery just south of St. Marks on Susan Beach Road that is called "Ralphs Hill Cemetery". The hill is just a sandy rise of about 4 feet in elevation. Ironically, there are only a few Ralphs buried there. Also as it is the case with other families, Ralphs Hill appears to be the burial ground for area 19th century Methodists and their Episcopal relatives were buried at St Marks. No one I know has any information about the church that may have accompanied Ralphs Hill Cemetery, although the 1868 Beers Little Creek Hundred Map shows a "MP Church" on Susan Beach Road very near the cemetery. I faintly remember the building from my childhood, but was not aware it was a church. Nothing remains of it today. Not surprisingly, the Ralphs intermarried with all of the families in the area, including several of mine (Ellis & Cooper). In the case of my relatives, all of the marriages to the Ralphs of which I am aware were in the 19th century. I can't think of any Ralphs that moved south in the late 1700s or early 1800s, but I have not looked carefully at this. Several Ralphs did move to the midwest in the 1800s and one, Matthias Ralph (grandson of William & Mary) was prominent in Adams County, Illinois. 2. Below are two links concerning epidemics. The first lists epidemics in Maryland and the second is an interesting article about Yellow Fever Epidemics in the US and highlights the Philadelphia epidemic of 1793. However, as mentioned in an earlier communication, most deaths involving multiple family members are not due to epidemics but due to local contagious diseases. This happened to the family of James Wilson Littleton Sturgis in 1839. He lost his first wife and two children all within a month of each other. http://www.mdhistoryonline.net/mdmedicine/index.cfm?action=epidemics http://bobarnebeck.com/history.html --Dave -----Original Message----- From: lower-delmarva-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lower-delmarva-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of lower-delmarva-roots-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, July 19, 2014 3:00 AM To: lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS Digest, Vol 9, Issue 100 LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS Administrivia For information about the Lower Delmarva Roots Mailing List, including list guidelines and instructions for unsubscribing and subscribing, see the LDRoots FAQ: http://www.tyaskin.com/handley/ldrfaq.htm Today's Topics: 1. Mother Susan (Sebo) Caulk widow of John Caulk, died about age 60 in Jan. 1850 of typhoid in Pencader Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. Daughter Mary Frances Caulk died (same place) in April 1850, "of a ruptured blood vessel", but we don't know what the cause of that might have been. Hemorrhage and intestinal perforation are two rare but dangerous complications of typhoid infection. They were of varying ages, up to 18, which I have taken to suggest some commonplace endemic disease in their rural community (Columbia, Little Creek Hundred).
