    1. [LDR] Levi Ball & Seger Ball Rev. War
    2. Clare Pebworth
    3. Stratton Nottingham's book "Soldiers and Sailors of the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the Rev. War" states that James Ball and SEGER BALL were soldiers in the Virginia Continental Line in the Rev. War and their ONLY HEIRS at law were Christopher Ball, John Ball, Samuel Ball, Levi Ball, William Ball and Elizabeth Richardson. I can find nothing about SEGER BALL. Does anyone know anything about him??? Doris LeClerc Ball and George L. Ball's book "The Ball Family of the Potomac 1654-2004" states that the children of James Ball and Sarah (Jones) are: James, John, Matthew, Daniel, Gerrett, George, William, Christopher, Joseph, Lydia. NOTE: There is no Levi listed as a child of James Ball but a Levi Ball is listed as an heir of Seger Ball and James Ball. There is a Levi Ball listed in Peden's "Rev. Patriots of Worcester and Somerset Co., MD" as a Private, Worcester Militia, Wicomico Bn., Capt. James Patterson's Co., July 15,1780 (Ref: M-258). Took oath of Allegence in Worcester Co. in 1778 (Ref: J-1814) (Box 4). What confuses me is that Levi Ball died Aug. 8, 1807 intestate and a Worcester Co., MD record states: John Ball, Samuel Ball, Levi Ball request that THE ADMINISTRATION OF THEIR FATHER, LEVY BALL'S ESTATE be granted to their brother Christopher Ball. Elizabeth Ball, widow of Levi Ball requests that the administration of her husband's estate be granted to Christopher Ball. Bonds: John R. Slocomb and Joseph Stevenson. (Another record lists John Ball, Lawrence Ball and Levi gives administration to brother Christopher Ball.) Can anyone straighten this out for me. Who are Seger Ball's heirs? Who is Seger Ball? Who is the father of Levi Ball who died in 1807? Thanks so very much for taking the time to help me straighten out this mess. Clare

    1. [LDR] John Franklin, Jr. of Worcester Co., MD
    2. Hi- I just subscribed to this list, in digest mode. According to the will of John Franklin, Sr. of Worcester Co. (d. 1810), his son John had children Stephen, Hannah, Maria and Tabitha. I've accumulated some circumstantial evidence that this Maria was the wife of Uriah Cramer of Bass River, Burlington Co., NJ but have not been able to confirm the connection. I also believe that John Jr.'s wife was named Ellen and that their daughter Tabitha married William Hawn of Philadelphia (c. 1797 - 1852) but cannot prove those connections either. John Jr. seems to have died between 1800 and 1810, but I can't find any estate proceedings for him. I suspect he died before 1806 and that the orphans court records from 1800-1806 were destroyed in the 1834 fire, because they're not with the others posted on the LDS website. Can anybody confirm that? The families in this area seem to have belonged to Buckingham Presbyterian Church. I found an email in the archive for this list that had some baptisms from the 1820's, a couple of deaths and a list of members. Are there any other extant records of that congregation from before 1830 or so? Maybe from c. 1800? I welcome answers to any of the above questions as well as any information about John Jr., his wife and his children. Also, I've worked my way through a lot of records relating to the Worcester Co. Franklin family and I have a pretty good handle on its first few generations, so if anybody has any questions about that, feel free to ask away! Thanks!! Gary L. Maher New Jersey / USA

    1. [LDR] Caroline County Will
    2. Hello list! I am in need of some direction and advice. The problem: Elijah DEAN died c. 15 Apr 1805 in Caroline County. His will is included in FamilySearch .org Maryland Register of Wills Books 1629-1983 Wills 1803-1825 Book C pages 79-82.    Unfortunately, pages 80 and 81 are missing from the images.   It seems that they were not microfilmed with the rest of the will book. I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed.   Caroline County Register of Wills or Maryland State Archives or other?   As I can easily get to Annapolis, I am loath to hire a genealogist for these 2 pages. Thank you, LeeAnn

It was located west of Bear Swamp. Also, it was west of the Pocomoke River, so it's now in another county. Elisha Penewell also comes up in plats.net under Wicomico County, too, but there weren't any scans, and not Holly Swamp, either. Southeast of Salisbury, Maryland, there is a Bear Swamp Road, going from near the airport, running east. Johnson Road coming from the southeast side of Salisbury soon becomes Bear Swamp Road, meandering generally east through mostly unpopulated country, and ends at Rt. 554 south of Powelville. 3. Of course, I understood that this was a transcription of part of Marvil's book. The shipbuilding project is a wonderful idea. I hope you publish it online where people can read and enjoy it. 2. Tom, Thanks for the input! Dr. Marvil's book doesn't say too much about Captain Kendall M. Lewis (1772-1862); here is what it does say: "Captain Lewis built the first dock at Bethel and sailed many ships in the Nanticoke. One of his ships was the SAILOR which is mentioned in another part of this book. Captain Lewis was the father of H. Clay Lewis of Laurel, and the grandfather of Dr. Warren Lewis of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the inventor of Lewisite gas in World War I." In the section on the SAILOR, it says: "In 1840 Kendall Lewis laid out twelve lots on site of present town (Lewisville) which is now called Bethel, (Biblical name for sailor's retreat). Kendall Lewis also built a wharf on the shore of Broad Creek, probably at the site of Lewisville Marine Railway shipyard." There is also an image of a portrait of Captain Lewis in the book. Although Lewis died 27 years before the first Bethel Rams were built in 1889, he can certainly be considered their granddaddy! Andrew In a message dated 8/18/2012 8:58:08 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, rgcs5106@comcast.net writes: Good evening All; I have read with great interest the exchange on the subject of the rams that were built in Bethel Delaware. Bethel was indeed called Lewisville. From the research that I have done, Kendall Major Lewis was the gentleman that founded the town by investing and beginning the shipbuilding that made the Nanticoke Famous. Mr. Lewis was from the family of Lewis' that lived in Hurley's Neck in Dorchester County. According to what I have found in my research, Kendall Lewis was not of age when his father Levin Lewis passed. His older brothers one of which was James Kendall Lewis who built the brick home in Vienna told him that if he did their bidding, when he become of age they would give him his portion of their fathers estate. Well the time came and Kendall asked for his portion of what he was entitled to and he was denied his inheritance. Kendall went from Dorchester County to Georgetown just outside of Washington D.C. Long story short, he married into a wealthy family became a Captain owning several vessels plying the Bay and the coastal waters. As you well know the rest of the story Kendall ended up in the area of Bethel still sailing and owning several vessels and started the shipbuilding that made Lewisville a.k.a. Bethel famous. On a side note, I posted asking for some information on the family of Walter Abner Gibbs from the Wilmington Delaware area. I am looking for descendants of his that may be able to help me in the research that I am doing on his trap (furbearing animal) research, development, manufacturing. Mr. Gibbs' company was sold to the Animal Trap Company in Litiz PA. I wonder if Mr. Gibbs' son William was part of this process as I have also found but need to get and copy several photos of Animal Trap Company personnel in the Griffiths Neck/Bestpitch Ferry area of Dorchester County and was told that they too did research and development of traps on those marshes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
