Karen, Can you name the source and location for the record of this information? I realize that this question is not easy (or perhaps even possible) to answer, but might anyone have information on a connection between the family of Grace O'Neil (c.1603-1682) and that of Capt. James Neale (c.1614-c.1684)? I have found the following and wonder where (or if) the John Neale mentioned fits into the James Neale family. Any ideas? Karen "On the 18th of July 1654, Lt. Waters William Waters, Gent.[son of Grace O'Neil], was appointed guardian of Margaret Neale [dau. of John Neale & Elizabeth (Southy)], her mother being lately deceased. It appears from old letters that John Pennell, of London, advanced William Waters seven pounds sterling to purchase clothes, and sent him to Virginia at the request of his mother, and that William Waters was a cousin of Capt. Eliza Allen married _Burton_ (http://www.ancestry.com/facts/burton-family-history.ashx) _Hurley_ (http://www.ancestry.com/facts/hurley-family-history.ashx) abt 1818 and when he died married Isaac _Cannon_ (http://www.ancestry.com/facts/cannon-family-history.ashx) in 1833. She had 5 children in each marriage. Supposedly her obituary identifies her parents as John Allen and Rebecca or Margaret _Coulbourn_ (http://www.ancestry.com/facts/coulbourn-family-history.ashx) . She died 4/19/1887 and is buried in the _Cannon_ (http://www.ancestry.com/facts/cannon-family-history.ashx) Family plot outside _Seaford_ (http://www.ancestry.com/facts/seaford-family-history.ashx) ...the farm where she lived with Isaac Cannon. I connect to this line back to the first Richard Crockett. Please let everyone know if you ever "stumble" across where the first Richard came from. The family "ledgend" says French. Others have said Irish. I have always wondered about the connection to Joseph V as my Nicholas was in Vienna MD with his Benton for several years and had always assumed they were "cousins" of some sort but could never figure out the connection. Thanks for this connection. Margaret Maddux of Worcester Co, MD (widow of Bell Maddux) wrote a will dated 18 March 1797 that was witnessed by Boaz Walston, John Walston and William Powell. Margaret's son-in-law, Charles Walston, was named executor. I'm trying to determine which Maddux daughter Charles Walston married. It's possible this wife was deceased by the time the will was written in 1797. Does anyone have any information about this Walston-Maddux connection? Thank you.
Thanks to the generosity and wisdom of a few Roots-Friends I have been able to add another generation to my family history, notably Joseph Venables Crockett who lived c1765-72/1822. He was the father of my gggrandmother, Harriet Crockett Hayman. I have a few more questions about his ancestry and some information to share: The assumption is that Joseph Venables Crockett was the gggrandson of the first Richard Crockett we know of in Somerset County, Richard (bc1643-d1706/1715 SOM); Generation 2=Richard (bc1676-WPJun1727-married Alice Shiles or Waller); Richard 3 (bc1708-WP1765 WORCESTER)m Elizabeth; William (bc1737-1772) m. Margaret; Joseph Venables Crockett (1765-1772/1822). This all seems generally agreed upon. I also found a marriage in Caroline County for Joseph Crockett and Rebecca Blades in 1790. Joseph Crockett's daughter Harriet Hayman named a daughter Rebecca (I have her two daughters' Death Certificates naming her as their mother). Could Rebecca Blades be Joseph Venables Crockett's wife? My questions of the above: Who was Joseph Venables? I found a Joseph Venables born in New Kent, VA c1671 who immigrated to Somerset and was involved in building (according to Torrence). I also have a source that says he married Elizabeth Winder (bc1668) the daughter of John Winder and Bridget Meador. If this Elizabeth Winder married Joseph Venables (Torrence says she did in the section under John Winder), could their daughter Elizabeth Venables, (b1690) be the Elizabeth who married Richard Crockett3 even though it would seem she was ten plus years older than him? Or could the dates be wrong? I have heard also that Richard3 married 1st Elizabeth Winder and 2nd Elizabeth Venables. That is possible as John Winder had three granddaughters named Elizabeth-two Winder and one Venables, although the two Winder have traceable husbands. Richard3 also moved up the Nanticoke into Sussex County so the marriage of his grandson Joseph Venables Crockett, who apparently inherited his sawmill, in Caroline County would not be unusual. The Venables family in New Kent is discussed in some detail at the following site which is where I found some information on Joseph Venables. _http://www.mcgrawonline.us/FamHistDarrell1.html_ (http://www.mcgrawonline.us/FamHistDarrell1.html) Is anyone else researching these lines? Freda - I'm a descendant of Robert Nairne/Nairn/Nearn through Robert Jr. & Janet Watts. Done what I could and got stumped on the family. I've a guess that Robert Sr. had married a Richie because David Richie left his estate to Robert's sons but have never been able to prove anything. Surname Oliver is a new one by me for Mary, widow of Samuel Layfield. I have recently started working on my GREENHAWK family again. I would like to communicate with anyone who may have information as to where the Greenhawk name originated. The only Greenhawk families I can find seem to have originated in the Talbot County in the mid 1700's but there is very little info to work with and develop a family lineage from so I was hoping someone may have family records, memories or any info to share that would help me. You know, List, this Breviate takes a couple of hours or so to go through, and it's a valuable document genealogy-wise, but it sure reinforced the negative stereotypes current today about lawyers! It's a great site, if they have newspapers in the area and time period you are researching. I found a series of ads in the 1790s in Norfolk VA that showed one of my ancestors was an itinerant dentist, going from town to town and advertising for patients. I also found a number of articles about my father's achievements in high school and college in San antonio Texas in the 1930s, one of which described his costume on a float in a parade. These are real treasures -- it's doubtful the info would come to light any other way. On Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 6:45 PM, Frank Collins <frank.collins@gmail.com>wrote: > www.Genealogybank.com is great. All of the cemeteries in Norfolk are listed on this site with the names of those buried in each. Unfortunately, there is no master list of names across all cemeteries. In my case I focused on Elmwood/Cedar Grove Cemetery and Forest Lawn where generations of the maternal side of my family are buried. Hi Michelle, All I know is that according to the Sept. 23, 1808, Worcester Co., MD settlement of Levi Ball's Estate he had 6 children: John, Samuel, Levi, William, Christopher and Elizabeth. Page 58 of Nottingham's "Soldiers and Sailors of the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the Rev. War" Nottingham's book states "Christopher Ball, John Ball, Samuel Ball, Levi Ball, William Ball and Elizabeth Richardson are the only heirs at law of James Ball and Seger Ball who were soldiers in the Virginia Continental Line in the Rev. War." Levi Ball's inventory and sale of his property lists a Ralph Richardson as purchasing many items. No other Richardson is listed. Based on all this info., I am guessing that Elizabeth (Ball) Richardson was the wife of Ralph Richardson. I say that was because Levi Ball died intestate Aug. 8, 1807 and his probate lists John, Samuel, Levi as giving administration to brother Christopher and Elizabeth Ball, widow of Levi Ball also gives administration to Christopher Ball. According to the record that I fund in a book, Levi's son William is not listed nor is his dau. Elizabeth so they could be dec'd or the book is wrong. I am attempting to find the name of Levi, (Sr.)'s children's mother. I know that after Aug. 1788 in Worcester Co., MD, Levi married Elizabeth Mills, widow of Robert Mills. According to the dates, I don't think she was the mother of these 6 children. Since I have had no luck going through the front door, I am attempting to go through the side door by finding info for Ralph and/or Elizabeth (Ball) Richardson. I know in 1800 Levi Ball lived in Pitts Creek Hundred, Worcester, MD and his neighbors were Gillett Mills, (son of Levi's wife Elizabeth from former marriage), Benjamin Davis, John Parker, Johannes Watson, Wm Aydolott, John Payne, Thomas Taylor and John Selby. I hope I have explained this clearly. Thanks so very much for responding.
