    1. [LDR] {LDR}Culleney,Messick,TIndal,Dolbee
    2. Mary
    3. Hello, I've written before about my brick wall but thought I might bring it up again. I have the Will written 1817 of John Culleney of Sussex Co., DE. The goods and chattels inventory, 12 day Sept 1825 listed John as Little Creek Hundred. Land was to be divided between three sons Sothey Culling, George Armstrong Culleney and James Ridgway Cullinney and personal estate between three daughters Hetty Messick, Betsy Tindal and Salley Dolbee. Note the three different spellings of the Culleney name in the same area of the Will. He was without a wife at the time of this Will, it seems. He appointed his son Sothey as Exactor. However, the Counties papers have John Culleney goods and chattels, rights and credits administered by Frances Culleny. She was not the mother of the children per other orphan court records. Jeremiah Kinney was the attny for Frances Culleny. Somewhere someone listed John Culleney's wife as Mary Warrington. Land records of Sussex Co 1807-1808 has John and Mary Culleney selling to Joseph Vinson. Does anyone have and information on Mary Warrington probably born in the late 1700s? 1820 Census shows John Culleny(oldest male 45 and up) in Little Creek Hundreds(Laurel) and Sothey Culleny(oldest male 26-45) in Broad Creek Hundreds(Concord.) 3. Help is needed in Accomack County, VA to identify a family with the surname of Gladding, but I have found this family in 1870 Atlantic, Accomack, VA census under Gladden and in 1880 under Gladdin as follows: 1870 Gladden, Erastus 21 Farmer VA Gladden, Samuel 16 Farm Labor VA Parker, Elizabeth 49 Keep House VA 1880 Gladdin, Sam B (S) 26 Sailor VA/VA/VA Parker, Eliz. P. (W) 59 Mother VA/VA/VA I have also found an Accomack County marriage of Henry Parker to Elizabeth (P) Gladding on 10 Jan 1867. I would like to know the maiden name of Elizabeth P. Gladding and her husband Gladding's first name. She would have had to married Mr. Gladding prior to 1849 and he would have died prior to her marriage to Mr. Parker in 1867. (Mr. Gladding probably died during the Civil War.) Any help is most appreciated. Thank you, Sharon

    2. Virginia Stenley
    3. Interested in any information concerning Permelia (Pamelia, Milly, Milla) Johnson, born 1817 in DE, who married James Byard Thomas (1808 in DE). They owned a 2 acre parcel of land in Sussex County that James bought in 1839 from Joseph D. Allen and wife, which was opposite store house then occupied by William W. Evans between County roads leading from said store to Dagsboro and the store owned by L.Lemuel A. Hall. They sold said land known as "Hunting Quarter" in 1852 to William W. Evans after Permelia and James had moved to Accomack County VA c. 1844. Any information on her parents and siblings and the location of their property would be greatly appreciated.

    3. I agree with the facts as you gave them but unfortunately I cannot add any additional facts. I will check my deed and will books first chance and see if I can find anything on the Carlilse line. I have a Solomon d 1774, the son of Charles Townsend and grandson of John Sr. I would like to have the pictures of the stones if you are willing to share. Gwen " While I am checking, let me run this by you, too. I think Elizabeth Deputy's sister, Abigail, married John Clendaniel. Charles might have married Mary Clendaniel. Stephen married Elizabeth Wattson (second?). I do know this Solomon Townsend is mine, however, because in the will and the codicil he names John Carlisle as the husband of his daughter Abigail. In Carlisle's estate, payment to John Chambers in New Jersey is announced under the heading of "Abigail." I have pictures of their headstones in a remote old Baptist cemetery by a guardrail with nothing else around for some a couple of miles. Do you know of a Baptist connection for any of these folks (Chance, Chambers, Carlisle, Townsend)?" Glenn

    3. Gwen, Thanks for the reply. I did notice a number of Lofland/Loughlans tied to the family, and you are correct that marriages in successive generations would be unlikely. It seems that Jacob, the son of this Solomon, married a Lofland. However, I must say that my research in DE is probably less extensive than yours. I do not, for instance, have any clue about who this Solomon (d1775) married. Of his six children, William would be named for Solomon's father and Abigail would be named for a sister. "Abigail" persists for a few more generations. While I am checking, let me run this by you, too. I think Elizabeth Deputy's sister, Abigail, married John Clendaniel. Charles might have married Mary Clendaniel. Stephen married Elizabeth Wattson (second?). That's not much help. I guess the other thing is that the marriages I saw for various Solomon Townsends don't fit this scenario well timewise. Do you know of a Baptist connection for any of these folks (Chance, Chambers, Carlisle, Townsend)? Anyone, please chime in. 2. Jim Moore
    3. In her Sussex Co will probated 29 Sept 1796, Rachel Prider gave to her friend Solomon Layton "...all the lands that I now own and for my daughter Polly (Smith) to live on said land with said Solomon during her natural life as one of his family..." Scharf says "Prider" is a corruption of "Rider." "Doublin" was granted to John Rider in 1720, containing 543 acres. In 1776, this land was resurveyed for James Prider. James was on the assessment roll of NW Fork 100 in 1785. These are the only two references I have found for a "Prider." Can anyone give me insight into the Prider/Rider tribe and the connection to Solomon Layton? Thank you. Jim Moore Wilmington DE

    1. [LDR] White, William T. from Accomac Co VA
    2. Hi, Upper Shore Genealogy Society meeting-bring a friend: Sept 21, 2008, 2pm, Dept of Aging, Kramer Bldg., 104 Powell St., Centreville, MD "Unearthed Cast-Iron Casket Is William T. White" In the Spring of 2005 in Wash. DC, a construction crew was digging to install a new gas line. The location was in the Columbia Heights area near George Washington University. THey unearthed a cast-iron casket dating to the late 19th century. THe 150-year old casket with the body intact was turned over to the Smithsonian Institute to learn the boy's identity and trace his genealogy. Finally in Sept. 2007, his identity was made from DNA samples. He was William T> White, about 15 years old, from Accomac Co., on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Debra Hull-Walski and Randall Scott led a group of experts from the "National Museum of Natural History" to learn everything possible about this 15 year old boy, his life and ancestry. They constructed a 788-person family tree - many from the MD counties of Caroline, Queen Anne, and Talbot as well as Virginia's Wastern Shore. The diagram stretched the length of a wall. His roots in America go back to 1600 to Anthony West, who was one of the settlers of Jamestown. VA. Could this be your ancestry? WHat did WIlliam look like? Why was he buried there? For the rest of the story, be sure to attend! Presenting the program will be Debra Hull-Walski and Dave Hunt from the Smithsonian. They will do a slide presentation with the full details of the projest fromt he beginning to now. ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. 3. Hi Mr. Wiggins: Reading my LDR e-mails today, I noticed your surname. Just two days ago, I was contacted regarding my search for my Roberts ancestor (Alexander Roberts b ca1812 VA). I was told that the maiden name of his wife was Mary "Polly" Wiggins, and I'm wondering if she could possibly be in your line. As a side bar, I think it's interesting that their daughter, Barbara Roberts, married Joseph Okey, who I believe to be descended from the Sussex Co. DE Okey's, through his father, Burton. Would love to hear from you. Laura Logan Frazier _________________________________________________________________ Get ideas on sharing photos from people like you. 3. Gwen, I know you were reaching out to Ken, Gwen, but you got Glenn. I believe we are cousins through the Townsends, but I want to run my thoughts by you to see if there is anything you can add...or subtract. I assume your Elizabeth Townsend Deputy is the daughter of William and Elizabeth Costin Townsend. William, then seems to be the son of John Townsend and Elizabeth Danford. Stephen Costin and Comfort Furness were the maternal grandparents. Siblings for Elizabeth Townsend Deputy seem to be Stephen, Costen, Solomon, Charles, and Abigail, as listed in William Townsend's will of 1728 Jan 4. I am concerned with the brother Solomon, and wonder if I have the right one among the several Solomon Townsends who roamed the area. I think this one is the one whose will was written 1772 Jan 4 with a codicil written 1773 Mar 23, and proved 1775 July 29. If so, then his "six children" would be Jacob, William, Solomon (died between the writing of the will and the codicil), Luke, "Abigale" who married John Carlisle, and Pheby who married Joseph Morris. My connection is Abigail and John Carlisle's daughter "Abegal" who married first Spencer Chance and second John Chambers. Spencer died in Maurice River Township, Cumberland County, NJ, and that is where the son of former Sussex Co, DE, resident William Chambers married her. I welcome any thoughts anyone has on the family structure.
