No online or print source that I know of, but someone can look at the approximate date in the "Chancery Records" in the Snow Hill Courthouse. There is a lot of very interesting stuff in those records! The Snow Hill Messenger, November 1833, reported a sheriff's sale, stemming from a lawsuit between Joseph C. FOOKES and David & Jesse BROWN. Two tracts, Mills Supply and Safe Guard, as well as the adjacent farm of William DIXON, were involved. The legal notice is brief and I can't sort out the details. Does anyone know of an online or print source for additional information about civil suits in this period?? Thanks. Elaine

I'm researching the history of the George Washington Covington store in Still Pond MD. (This G.W. is NOT Congressman George Washington Covington, who appears to be a 3rd cousin of mine removed by time, and who spent his life in Berlin and Snow Hill). In 1850 16-year old Covington was living in Baltimore with Mr and Mrs Daniel Haines, their daughter, and a Henry J Strandberg and his wife. He had been born 1834 in Middletown Del. area. His father was Nathaniel Covington and mother was Maria Covington. By 1840 a Nathaniel Covington is living in Kent Co. Md. He disappears from the 1850 census. Dead? In the same census 3 Haineses were living with Carl Strandberg (Henry's father) in Chestertown. Carl was a baker, age 74, and a prominent citizen whose son Charles went on to run a large hotel in town. In 1851, according to Covington's obit, he was working in Daniel Haines' store in Still Pond. At some point after that he satrted a drug store in Still Pond. By 1862 he bought property (where the existing store is located). By 1877 it appears he had built the existing general store. (Date of building is somewhat murky). Danl Haines in Balto was born in Delaware and was either 34 or 84 (bad writing). Wife was 35 and 3 year old girl makes me suspect that 84 is a transcription error. So, any clues on Haines-Covington-Strandberg connections?
Freda, Are any of your Mills ancestors connected to my great-grandfather Miles Tindal Mills (1826-1908) of Cedar Creek Hundred? Mary Jane Mallonee Wilmington, DE

I don't know anymore about this topic than was in the newspaper, but I have learned so much about lower Delamrva while "lurking" here on the list most of the time, I thought I should share this in case some of you hadn't seen it or didn't already know about it, especially those who aren't local. Jim, In answer to your question: >>What families are you researching?<< We've corresponded before. I mainly have information on Smiths and Browns and their land transactions with other allied families (including your Laytons). Lisa
Bravo, Jim! If you need any help, I'd be happy to help. Hope you have made reservations in a good nursing home with a mapping room ........ I have just spent the last month transcribing a few of the Griffith and Willey patents and deeds in the area of Dorchester that borders on the NE fork of the Nanticoke and all I can say is I have never seen such weird shaped pieces of property .......maybe because I come from Ohio where things were often laid out in neat grids I have illusions about property lines .......but some of the drawings are amazing and transcribing the perches, and degrees will take you on a merry chase ...........so here's to the rest of your life, you will never want for something to do on a rainy day and we all applaud you Carol -------------------------------------------------- From: "Jim Moore" <moorejl@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, September 26, 2008 2:47 PM To: "DE Gen list" <Lower-Delmarva-Roots-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [LDR] Marshyhope Gazetteer > Folks: After several years of dithering, I'm taking the plunge to buy > deed > mapping software for Greater Bridgeville. Although I am not actively researching this line at this time -- I can only work on so much at once! -- I am interested in your research. My husband is descended from Hannah Mills, granddaughter of William and Jennet, who married Thomas Harney. Thanks for keeping us in mind. Linda
Bob & Jim, Although I am not researching the Marshyhope area, I am interested in knowing what all you find. My paternal grandparents lived there for many years and it was in the Rural Greenwood mailing district. Also, if you see anything about the small community called BURRISVILLE or BURRSVILLE, please let me know. I believe it is very near Marshyhope.
