Hi Paul, I don't have any information on the graveyard you mentioned but I ran into two Hitchens headstones in the Westwoods area near Gumboro when I was there last year taking cemetery pictures. They are: James D. Hitchens, Sr., 1/28/1937-12/16/2000 Bryan K. If anyone corresponded with Bill often and would like to send a card to his wife or sister please send me a e-mail to grwint@comcast.net . Bill was my cousin, our mothers were Messick sisters. I can get you the address, but do not want to post it totally public. His wife is in Ga., away from any family and his sister is the last in her immediate family, both parents and siblings now gone. So, if your inclined it would probably comfort them to know folks care. I also want to thank Shari for the post and those who expressed their sympathy, on behalf of the family. I am saddened to hear about the passing of Bill Short. He and I used to converse via the "list" and I enjoyed what he had to say about "Slower Lower Delaware" and his memories of Cannon, Delaware. Elizabeth & Shari, Yes, Bill will be greatly missed. I knew that he was very ill, and I hoped that he was getting better. Rochelle was keeping me informed about his health and I really enjoyed their emails. Bill and I were distant cousins through the BURROWS/BURRIS family and both were born in Cannon, DE. Quote: I cannot express enough the value of this resource...both from a macro-historical level of....Unquote. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I for one furriner am green with envy at the opportunities you close-ies have to observe, learn, and use. Have any of you figured out how to run a camera over the shoulders, etc so we could buy copies? Having been close for years to good libraries, the dearth of them (and the convenience as well) is real cause for mourning. There is, as yet, no substitute, so we furriners try to egg you haves into something to share with we have-nots. We don't mind paying the traffic. We might would even donate copies to small impecunious county libraries we live near. One can never have too much information for us masses. We gobble it up like smoking opium! Mike Hitch, I know what a real surprise it was to me to finally puzzle out an Old German handwritten document re a 1700s citizen---didn't get absolutely all of it, but enough to understand what it was saying, and yes, the flavor is definitely there, and unique as well. Thanks, guys! PS: the internet was a truly marvelous invention, and we appreciate it no end, too! Thanks to all those who've made it a terrific place to spend time, and the back o' me hand to those who gum it up! Cheers especially who tell where they found information. The LDR list is a terrific, live, active place; special thanks to those who make it so. Ruth

We thought this very odd because in all correspondence etc. he was listed as coming from Monie in Somerset County (where he was born in 1894) or Crisfield, where his family lived until his father died in 1899. Has anyone ever heard of "Carrie"? Thanks very much... Thanks, Carol-- That's just the answer I thought I'd get if I asked MSA; I was hoping somebody had some inside info on the actual "problem".... Thx John - As having seen the database in its early stages, I cannot express enough the value of this resource...both from a macro-historical level of the Old Somerset region and a micro-historical level at the family history perspective. I remember finding things in the old warrants/surveys/patents that were very personal like old ORIGINAL letters vouching for properties, depositions, references to neighbors and special property boundaries (trees, stones, cannon balls, etc) and landmarks, etc...and a lot of the humorous names for land plats! [The funniest of the latter IMO is the land that bordered MT PLEASANT of my 5x g-grandpa Benjamin Hitch called FAT ARSE QUARTER]. These records really bring a uniquely human perspective to what otherwise might be 'dry history' and provide a unique understanding of the local region and its inhabitants and how they lived 200-300+ years ago. And that was 6 years ago when I was involved - you have taken those records and worked tremendous amounts of hours to make them presentable and organized in such a way that everyone can benefit and you should be commended for same. What might have taken a 'layman genealogist' days, if not months, of digging to find in those original records (if, indeed, it could even be found), can now be accomplished in minutes. Heck, one of the greatest accomplishments in my estimation is just reading and translating the 17th and 18th century writing! Congrats and thank you for letting me participate in the workshop. Now, if you'd just write that book or publish the database in some form...I'd pay top $$$ for it knowing how valuable it truly is....! Thanks again and I hope to see/meet the folks on here at the workshop!
