Surely the earliest Levin on Delmarva was the Quaker Levin Denwood of Accomack and Northampton (b. 1603, per Torrence), whose son Levin came to Monie in Somerset ca 1665 with other Quaker exiles from VA, inspiring in-family namings of Levin Covington, Levin Gale, etc. It appears in many, many Somerset famiiies. I have Levins in my ancestry in colonial New York and New England, too. It's not that rare. Not like Affradozy and Zorobabel, which are pearls of great price. John

    2. The name Levin appears in my early Dorchester County Bramble family along with the name Levi, which could be a shortened version. The Brambles were supposedly from England. dorera@bcctv.net Regards, Doris ----- Original Message ----- From: "mike hilton" <jmh963@hotmail.com> To: "mike hilton" <lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 10:15 PM Subject: [LDR] The Name LEVIN I've noticed in the Delmarva Region that the name Levin, has been used since the early 1700s and was wondering with whom the name Levin originated? 3. John, Thank you the more detailed and annotated LW & T and Land Patent/Sale info. You pointed out one particular detail that had escaped my thought processes. The Patent for Bacon Quarter being dated 1685/6. All sources I have access to up to this point had this listed as 1668 ( a transcription error??), which if I went by his @ DOB of 1658, couldn't have been correct. I NEVER had put the two side by side in my brain. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! This fact puts into context more of the idea that Peter's Father (John) probably arrived into Northampton Co. in the timeframe of the 1653 date AND may have never Patented land in MD. I will go looking in Northampton. I am again amazed at the depth of your knowledge of all things LAND! The time and energy you have put into this work astounds me. I hope one day to be on the Shore when you give one of your presentations, so I can meet you and shake your hand. 3. Peter Parsons, planter Spittle Fields 100 North side of Wicomico Creeke . land formerly surveyed for Maj. Gen. Richard Bennet on east side of a creek called Back Creeke branch [no date] ... Next, re Peter Parsons: By Patents 15:418-419 and 18:035, he transported himself into Somerset in 1672. By So Deeds MA:778, on 09 Mar 1685/6 Richard Stevens et ux. Abigail Stevens sold Peter Parsons 200 ac of the 800 ac GODDARDS FOLLY (Patents 19:566 + CB#3:284). On 13 Nov 1685 Peter Parsons had survey made on the 200 ac BACON QUARTER (Patents 22:233 + NS#2:269), patented on 01 Jun 1687 (actually after his death, following:) By the LW&T of Peter Parsons - MD Wills 4:246 and So Wills EB5:019, made 05 Nov 1686, and proved 28 Mar 1687 - he bequeathed his 200 ac dwelling plantation [evidently GODDARDS FOLLY] to eldest son Peter Parsons and 200 ac of "The Forest" [evidently = BACON QUARTER] to his second son John Parsons. So the sense is that all early Parsons in Somerset descend from Peter, not John.

    2. Blox Daugherty
    3. It is crucial that you realize that the spelling of the last name means essentially NOTHING. DeHority is a relatively unique spelling that in today's world would make your searches a piece of cake, because the database would be relatively small, but that's not the way it was in 1800's. I would steer you in the direction of the Orphan's courts, and then every spelling of the last name that you could find in any record. Because, that's your best shot. If it remotely could "sound" like Dehority, it has been written as such. Blox Daugherty ps: I have found ancestors under seven different spellings to date, sometimes the SAME PERSON will appear in four records with four different spellings. Nobody could "spell" Daugherty" in 1800's, and in fact, very few folks off the street can "spell" it today.
