I attended a Seminar a number of years ago where a speaker on migration spoke about the wheat in the midwest. The wheat in the midwest may have been an entirely different crop from that on the eastern shore. Many soil and weather differences. The sod in the mid west was very difficult to penetrate, thus the term sod busters. The beer industry developed in the midwest because the German's brought in "Black Wheat" which grew well in the mid west. I hope I have remembered all of this correctly. You may want to check with Extension Offices in each state for verification. Of course wheat harvesting changed dramatically after Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper in the late 1800s, which is out of your time frame. 1. Re: [LDR] Sale of Part of Bacon Quarter back to Jonathon Parsons
    2. Mike Hilton .... RE 1626 acres and "growing wheat". This is not intended to sound "know it all", but as a native and former resident of the Great Plains of the US (i.e. Wheat country) I can comment that one farmer or one farmer and five sons would find it very hard work (because of the nature of wheat growing and the fact that they employed only hand tools in the time period you are referencing) to plant, and especially harvest, 100 acres of wheat (let along 1626, which would not have been possible w/o a VERY large labor force). While pontificating, this further....wheat has a more limited time period for cutting and threshing. It cannot be left in the field (the stalks would shortly lose strength and the whole crop would soon be flat on the ground) as corn was sometimes handled, back in the days of hand shucking the ear from the stalk. :-) :-) Joe Lake Thanks for the information, John about the Patented Certificates of resurvey, I know that one of the tracts absorbed into Bacon Quarter was called Deficiency, and 1626 Acres is quite a large amount of land from my viewpoint. Do you know if George Smith Sr. was growing either Tobacco or Wheat on that large of an acreage? Originally, I had no idea that he owned that much land, I thought he had just a couple of hundred acres and was perhaps a small or middling planter as such. It would be interesting if there was a surviving archive of Smith family papers or other family papers and letters from the mid to late 1700s. Do they have many surviving family archives from that time period in Delmarva that you are aware of? I've got a copy of the Nelms Store Accounts and found them to be quite interesting. Then 1747 as patent ># 2559 under Benjamin Aydelott. > ____________ This TRUITTS CHOICE was located about 2 miles west and a bit south of Berlin. Its northern vertex was at about the intersection of Cedar Lane and Evans Road, and it extended south from there about 3/4 mile, roughly an equilateral triangle. What confuses you is that the Certificate 2559 indexing form (image 1 at plats.net) misconstrues the grantee as Benjamin Aydelotte. It was, in fact, patented on 23 May 1747 to George Truitt (son of Job), which is faintly recorded on image 2 in the legend at the lower right, and supported by the assignment made (at the top of the same image) from Aydelotte to Truitt on 16 Jul 1707, two days after the survey was made for Aydelotte. The party creating the file index sometime around 1900 just missed this. It’s one of many kinds of indexing errors in this series. There is still something very fishy here. I think the assignment is a phony, created in 1747 to expedite Truitt’s claim to rights. The reasoning is that this tract appears in the LW&T of Job Truitt. See MD Wills 20:060, made 10 Mar 1729/30, proved 01 Apr 1730. Job granted this, his dwelling plantation, to his son George. Aydelotte may, in fact, have assigned the tract in 1707 to Job, but the paperwork may have gone missing. The surveyor drawing up the certificate rights may have simply re-created the supposed assignment, but incorrectly specifying George - not his father - as the recipient. George may not even have been born in 1707, for all I know. Anyway, that’s what I think is the simple explanation. The rest, as they say, is history. John

    1. Re: [LDR] Capt John Henry
    2. My inclination is to believe that Capt./Col. John Henry actually moved to Dorchester in the late 1750s, when he probably settled on WESTON (though I haven’t checked Dorchester Deeds for his purchase date). In 1760 he held warrants in Dorchester which he applied to HENRYS ADDITION TO WESTON, surveyed for him on 29 Apr 1761 (see Dorchester Patented Certificate 1440), adjoining his part of WESTON. His Dorchester homesite was precisely pointed out from across the River in now-Wicomico in one 1769 Somerset survey: see Somerset Patented Certificate 1042, GREENFIELD, for Henry Steele of Dorchester, which describes its first bounder as “a cedar post on the east side of Nanticoke River, in the marsh near the side of the River, opposite the door of Col. John Henry's dwelling house”. This very site can be seen on the 1877 Eastern Shore atlas map of Drawbridge District in Dorchester, labled as “F[rancis] J[enkins] Henry’s” residence. John Henry had been Surveyor of Worcester from its creation in 1742 until at least1755, but there are a few surveys recorded for him up until 1760 - maybe just late filings. I therefore suspect that his son’s biographer was a little imprecise, and that Governor John was actually born in Worcester, where his dad was still busy. As to where Capt. John Henry lived in Worcester, it’s probably precisely discoverable by careful sifting of the various properties he owned. But it’s a messy question without deep digging. In 1734 John Henry was taxed on 100 ac of PHARSALIA, near Spring Hill in now-Wicomico, which had been in his father’s hands. Another inclination might be REHOBOTH on the Pocomoke, where his mother had lived. But he made big acquisitions elsewhere, and my next (and perhaps best) guess for his ultimate dwelling land would be the 1793 acre plantation SECURITY (Somerset Patented Certificate 2122), patented for him in 1744 over in Worcester, “on the SW side of St. Martins River, at the head of Duck Creek out of the River”. This one seems right for the landed gentry, and his brother Robert Jenkins Henry relinquished his interest in it to him by Wo Deeds C:204, in 1754. John "Miller's Choice" <milchoice@yahoo.com> wrote: >Sorry, Marjorie; I have no idea where he lived.  He owned quite a bit of land per his will: > >John Henry made his will 21 April 1781, devising to son John tract Henrys Addition to Western, Cow Quarter and Marsh Meadow; to son Francis Jenkins Henry lands in Worcester County; to son Rider Henry tract Spring Hill, tract Gillys Delight and lands in Dorchester County, Pasture Neck where Benjamin and Joseph Cox live, Henrys Addition to Pasture Neck, two lots in Vienna Town, Lots 6 and 35; to son Robert Henry tract Riders Forest, and tract lying on Chickason in Indian Town, 450 acres of Harwell, Holly Swamp, Hog Range, Addition to Holly Swamp, Security, Greens Lott purchased of John Cope; five daughters Charlotte Winder, Kiturah Henry, Dolly Henry, Nancy Henry, Sarah Henry; to Esther Mahoon who has long lived in my family; a cypress swamp called Second Choice to the sons of David Johnson who surveyed it with me; friends Henry Steele, James Morris, Charles Morris to advise family (EB1:147). >  >  According to a biography of Gov. 1. [LDR] Benston [Benson]-Freeman Marriage Bond, 1822/1823
    2. Dave & Jane Kearney
    3. LDRooters, I've pasted below my transcription of the marriage bond between Googe [George] BENSTON [BENSON?] and Elisabeth [Elizabeth] FREEMAN, dated January 16, 1822. I transcribed the record from a collection entitled "Delaware Marriage Records, 1744-1912" provided by Ancestry.com. The underlying record is marked as Marriage Records, Vol. 41, p. 221. The Genealogy Trails website, genealogytrails.com/del/sussex/sussexmarriages-B.html, carries an index listing for what seems to be the same bond under the heading, "Sussex County, Delaware Marriages 1645-1899, FHL Film Number 0006416-0006422" (submitted by Barb Ziegenmeyer). In the transcription, I've designated the handwritten entries on the bond form as **XX** (with XX as the handwritten entry). Bear in mind that what one sees in handwriting is in the eye of the beholder. Another reviewer might read the entries differently. I've marked one word that I think might be "and" in brackets, with a question mark, because I am less certain of my interpretation. The form includes a couple of "ink blots" - I've shown what I think I see underneath the blots as ^^XX^^ (with XX as what I think I see underneath the ink blots). At least one of the two ink blots appears to be intentional, blotting out "three" in the year 1823, with "two" written immediately afterwards. I'm not sure if the other blot is intentional, or simply a blot. The apparent change of the bond's date from January 16, 1823 to January 16, 1822 raises some questions. The bond was made out to "Calob Radney," as "Governor and Commander in chief of the State of Delaware." This would be Governor Caleb RODNEY. According to Russell Pickett's "Delaware Governors" website, Caleb Rodney assumed the governor's office on April 23, 1822 upon the death of Governor John COLLINS, and served until January 21, 1823. www.russpickett.com/history/delgov2.htm#crod2. Thus, Caleb Rodney was not yet governor on the "corrected date" of January 16, 1822 shown on the bond, but was (barely still so) governor on January 16, 1823 - the bond's "original date." I imagine various ideas could be considered to explain the two dates, and various methods explored to determine which date, if either, might be the bond's "correct" date. Caleb Rodney was Delaware's 24th governor. He was born in Lewes and was a merchant in private life. The Delaware Governors website indicates that Governor Rodney was a Federalist and an Episcopalian. He was the brother of Daniel Rodney who was Delaware's 20th governor, a relative of Caesar Rodney who was Delaware's 4th governor, and an uncle to Congressman George Brydges Rodney. Caleb Rodney married Elizabeth WEST. According to Pickett, the family names of Caleb and Elizabeth's sons-in-law include LYONS, HALL, LAYTON, and LANDRETH. The transcription follows. I would love feedback from anyone tracking any of the possible lines here. Georgia, actually they came from Worcestor County, Maryland probably sometime in 1787 to Washington Co. Georgia, Hancock Co. Georgia was carved out of Washington Co. Ga in the early 1790s. Archibald Smith Sr. [1736-1799] was the son of George Smith Sr. [Ca. 1708-1775] & Judith Turner [Ca. 1710-After 1761?]. He named several children in his Will in Hancock Co. Georgia, my ancestor his son Archibald Smith Jr. [ca. 1765-1824] and his wife Elizabeth Vaughan [1770-After 1838] left Hancock Co. Georgia about 1809 for St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, where he lived for several years until moving to St. Landry Parish, Louisiana and from there in about 1824 he moved to Texas with Elizabeth Vaughan and his youngest children, the four oldest children staying in Louisiana. It is possible that your Archibald Smith was the son of George W. Smith {ca. 1770-? ]who was one of the brothers of Archibald Smith Jr. or of one of his other brothers. How far is Telfair County, Georgia from Hancock Co. Georgia? Hope this helps give you some clues.Mike Hilton From: RussellHenderson@aol.comDate: Sat, 17 Jan 2009 08:46:44 -0500Subject: Archibald Smith of GeorgiaTo: jmh963@hotmail.com You recently posted the information below on LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS@rootsweb.com. My ancient ancestors were Henderson and McKendrick in Scotland (depending on whether they were recorded in English or Gaelic records). Several males married Smiths. Of particular interest to me is the wife (and ancestry) of my 3rd ggf, Randall Henderson (b. 1769 Argyll, Scotland - d.1807 Tattnall County, Georgia). She, Nancy C. Smith, was born possibly around 1769 and died in 1861 in Clinch County, Georgia. There is a multi-volume series of books regarding early settlers of Georgia: "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia," by Folks Huxford and after his death by the Huxford Genealogical Society. The scholarship of Judge Huxford has proved to be very reliable. In writing of my ancestor Nancy Henderson in "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume VII", by page 185-186 her brother is referred to as " ...Archibald Smith, an early and prominent citizen of Telfair County ... ". That has been my one clue over the years trying to find which of the many Archibald Smiths is this one and from that, who are the parents of Archibald and Nancy. I've got a lot of Archibald Smiths who it could be, but nothing definitive. Your entry seems to show that you know enough about that Archibald Smith that you know when he was born. Perhaps you know more and perhaps you can help me break through the brick wall of "Who are the parents of Nancy C. Smith with brother Archibald of Georgia?" 3. Thanks for the infrormation John about the name Levin. I was curious because I have not run across that name previously and thought it might have been a name particular to the Delmarva Region. Most of my ancestors that settled on the Eastern Seaboard settled in the area between North Carolina and Maryland in the 1600s-1700s with some Dutch ancestors settling in New Amsterdam & Fort Orange and then moving south as well as my share of Pennsylvannia Germans and French settles in Louisiana. 2. Howard Hitch
    3. John or Mike, I would appreciate any help. I am trying to find out how I can locate exactly where a piece of land called Carters Lott might be so I could visit with some of the Timmons family. It was sold to Wm Timmons in 1686 and is located in old Somerset and was near or in what was known as Bognernorton which I think was Snow Hill. The Land Records show a George Carter as Grantor and Wm Trimmings(Timmons) as Grantee. Later, Wm Timmons widow split it between two sons and in 1723 they sold it. I have also found some references to Bognernorton as a Quaker area. Wm and Priscilla came to Somerset in 1880 and appear to have been indentured briefly. I know someone has a copy of a map which shows the relative location of some of the early land holdings in Somerset. Again, I would appreciate any help.
