Hi Jay, I have some information on Ricard Little West and family as well as photos of their headstones in a cemetery in Lewes, DE if you would like to see them.I have, for example, Richard Little West's parents as Robert West(8/15/1763)-(5/3/1833) and Naomi Thompson(9/19/1765)-(9/29/1804). They also had James T. West, Lewis West and Margaret who married Elisha D. Cullen. I have the will of James T. West where his estate is divided into equal shares for Lewis, Margaret and Richard Little West. The estate entered probate in 1822 and was settled in 1830. If my records are correct, Robert's father was Lewis West and the line goes back thru Robert(d1742) and Thomas(d1708) but Evan Ruben has better records than do I. Richard Little West married Clementine LaFetra and had a number of female children of which I know little. They also had had a son, James Thompson West who died in infancy. I hope this helps. Robert, Naomi, Richard Little, James T., Margaret, Lewis, Clementine are all buried in the Presbyterian Church cemetery in Lewes. I can send you the headstone photos if you wish. Walt... I am so glad that you notified us of the 1913 farm journal for Sussex County. I had forgotten how much information this book contains. Some may have overlooked the directory thinking it just pertained to farmers or those who lived in the country. No so! I will be glad to look up and surnames for our members and hopefully they will know which hundred their ancestors lived. If not, I will scan through the pages and let you know what is listed. Actually this Farm Directory shows almost as much info as the census. That is, name of wife, number of children, how much land the man had, either owned or tenant. Not all of our ancestors were listed and I really don't know why. I will be glad to look up names if you need me to. Ken -- Deputy was a "flag stop" a little less than a mile west of Ellendale (roughly paralleling current day State Route 16 from what I can tell). There is no trace of any structure today to my knowledge. Flag stops were common on the peninsula and in many rural areas in the 19th century and early 20th century. They were normally little more than shacks and did not constitute regular stops. Timetables would normally list such a station with the time trains were expected to pass by, and you (or the station agent if there was one) would "flag" a train down. The train would then stop, allowing you to climb aboard and buy a ticket from the conductor. Similarly, if someone on board the train wanted to stop there, he or she would inform the conductor who would signal to the engineer to stop. The concept is similar to modern trolley or tram systems -- unless the driver/engineer sees someone waiting or knows someone wants to get off they keep on going. A great resource for local railroads is Rails along the Chesapeake : a history of railroading on the Delmarva Peninsula by John Hayman. It was published in 1979 and has been out of print for close to 30 years. Most of the local libraries however stock multiple copies. It has maps, timetables, locomotive rosters, etc -- everything for the local train buff. Jim
