    1. [LDR] land tract Huntington DELIAH Bowen
    2. I just read a deed February 7, 1810 (Worcester Liber AB folio 99) whereby one Whittington Bowen with wife Delilah sells Huntington formerly possessed by Eli Bowen to Stuart Williamson. And on Plats.net they show a land commission for Huntington "estate of Nelly Bowen" 1811. Has anybody heard of this Delilah Bowen? The only thing I know about Huntington is that John Burbage owned most of it in 1783 and Jesse Jones d. 1800 (whose widow is Polly, probably wife of Eli Bowen below) owned 7 or so acres of it. The more I look at these unattached Bowens the more surprises. Who knew there was a Delilah, wife of Whittington Bowen in 1810! (note there are TWO Whittington Bowen's in the 1810 census. - one probably who has wife Rachel and the other one unknown). Doesn't a land commission mean that there is a dispute? If I have to pay another $35 to find out what this is I will be very unhappy! Thanks all for your patience. Liz I have a will for this Eli Bowen: Eli Bowen 12 January 1810 To wife Polly Bowen - livestock, wheat, flax spinning wheel, cradle To daughter Polly Bowen - two beds, livestock, Negro girl, looking glass, note on Schoolfield Bradford To son Selby - bed, desk, two chests, Negro boy Isaac, all the chairs, plow To brothers George and Whittington Bowen - heifer, ox cart, cross cut saw, hand saw, ax, wedge Executor: William Jones "to keep the property belonging to my son Selby in his hands until he arrives to age and that he bind him out to a trade when he is nine years old and to be bound untill he is eighteen years old, a shoe maker trade." Witness: Stuart Williamson, Josiah Collins, Bowdoin Hammond 19 January 1810 Then came

    2. Worcester Orphans Court records (Donald Heise, Vol. 2, page 284) shows that 12 Oct 1813 Christopher Ball discharged from guardianship to Luther Ball of John and Delia Ball of John. New guardian is David K. Baker of Accomack County. I am fairly certain I had sent you this. It is possible that the Accomack Records may contain more information, but I don't think I have the years in question. However, most county records are available on film through ILL from the Library of Virginia, if you want to look through them. Go to the Library of Virginia website and find City and County records, then select Accomack. When you fill out the request at your local library, you will need to specify the county as well as the reel name and number, as the reel numbers are somewhat generic. The fee is minimal, and you can then sit in your own library to read the records and copy anything useful. This seems to have been an amicable change of guardians, as we later find Christopher P. as surety for David. For some reason, I think I once knew that Christopher and Christopher P. were two separate persons. At least, I think so. Elizabeth In a message dated 7/14/2010 10:53:36 A.M. I know that a Christopher Ball was Luther and Delia's guardian when their father died in 1811. Is this record saying that the original Christopher Ball died and another Christopher Ball gave them the balance due? OR could their guardian changed from one Christopher Ball to another Christopher Ball and it was the 2nd Christopher Ball who received the Balance due? I know Luther and Delia were still minors in 1814. I don't understand the record. Thanks for your clarification. 2. This should be entertaining. I will sit back and see what happens - let's see whether they rip off the $35.00 and say they can't find it or take months to send it to me or lose the order all together....I will keep you all informed of developments. I wish there were private researchers in Annapolis that I could trust to take this on for the same fee but it's too late now as I gave them my credit card number. By the way they do not take AMEX which is the easiest credit card to use if you think you may have to dispute a charge. I was forced to use Visa LOL. ----- Original Message ----- From: Herb Frantz <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 14 Jul 2010 14:14:33 -0000 (UTC) Subject: Re: [LDR] Price increase MSA A CD of a film roll from the MSA now costs $60, not $40. 2. late guardian would, I think, most likely mean that he is no longer the guardian and that this is just winding up his administration of the estate. As to who took over, that should be in those records also, probably elsewhere. Even if they or the guardian were not in Worcester, if the land was still there I think Worcester would still be keeping track of it. Unless it had been sold? When minors reached the age of 14, they were able by law to petition for a different guardian. Probably a most helpful thing would be to find out just what the laws were regarding this sort of thing at that time, and I absolutely have no idea where that information is or might be nowadays. Generally if someone was deceased, the record would say deceased. Usually "late" seems to have meant formerly, whether the party had moved or was no longer in charge or some such thing. One often sees "late of such and such a place" or "late the wife of X (and now she has a whole new surname)". At least, that is how I have been interpreting these things. 1. Re: [LDR] Levi Ball
    2. These people are a nightmare. As for the Nottingham book, that information is from the orders of 1832-1836, at which time many of the people you really want are already dead. Sadly, they were fond of recycling names to confuse the issue. Also, the Seegar (or whatever) was not necessarily FROM the Eastern Shore, but he did have heirs who lived here. So, that information isn't really a lot of help. To add to the confusion, Hannah, widow of one of the Levi's, married James Ball of Samuel 18 Nov 1816. This James (19 Oct 1820) left his estate to Hannah for her natural life, and then to his two "cousins" Nancy & Levi Ball (this is at least the 3rd or 4th Levi, I am losing track of them!). There is not much on these people in Accomack records, so I would guess that their land was on (or across) the MD/VA state line. The Invy record for James mentions Jesse B. Ball and Levi Ball (guardian David K. Baker) as per statement Lemuel P. Spence, recorder of wills for Worcester County. So, it looks as if this James of Samuel had a son named Levi as well as one named Jesse, unless they were his stepsons which is also possible. In Nov 1824, there was a deceased Thomas Ball, whose administrator was Christopher P. Ball. Buyers included a James and a widow who seemingly had no name of her own. Christopher Ball Will Date: Probate Date: BALL, Christopher 21 January 1840 w. 8 August 1843 p. To my son, Christopher P. Ball, land where I live, 100 acres. To my daughters, Sophier/Sophia R. Ball, Lydia D. Ball and Elizabeth Ardis. Son of James Ardis mentioned. Witness: Jessee Wilkerson, George W. Davis and William C. Slocomb. f. 237 LPS. Elizabeth Ball Will Date: Probate Date: BALL, Elizabeth 8 Aug 1807w. 12 May 1809p. To son Samuel Mills, land left by my father. To grandchildren Mills Houston and Betsy Houston. To son Gillett Mills, EX. Wit; William Houston, Thomas Harris, Samuel McMaster. 1806-13, 163. John Mills Will Date: Probate Date: Mills, John Sr., 24 Nov.1799w. 24 Dec.1799p. To the Pitts Creek congregation, one acre for Presbyterian public meetings. To son John Mills, the plantation, 99 acres called HILL'S SECURITY, CHERRY STONE, that bounds Thomas Hargis. He is also the EX. To son Levin Mills, part of CHERRY STONE that bounds Samuel McMaster. To daughter Elizabeth. The balance to be divided equally between all my children. Wit; Hugh Wilson, Levi Ball, Gillit Mills(gave bond). 1799-1803

    3. Hi Elizabeth, You always come to my rescue and I thank you. Yes I have bits and pieces that I have gotten from books. I live in Fla. so I can't storm the Archives. I got my info from Worcester Co., MD Orphans Court Proceedings Vol. 1 1777-1800; Vol 2 1800-1816; and Rev. Patriots of Worcerster and Somerset Counties, MD 1775-1783 as will as Nottingham's books in VA. According to Nottingham's Soldiers and Sailors of the Eastern Shore of Va in the Rev. War Christopher Ball, John Ball, Samuel Ball, Levi Ball, William Ball and Elizabeth Richardson are the only heirs at law of James Ball and Seger Ball who were soldiers in the VA Continental Line in the Rev. War, can this mean that only James and Seger were in VA and not the others named? In the Rev. Patriots of Worcester and Somerset Co's Jacob Ball; Ens. John Ball; Pvt John Ball; Levi Ball; Samuel; Ball and William Ball are listed as serving from MD. Elizabeth Mills was not Elizabeth Richardson. In Levi's Estate's 1809 distribution Ralph Richardson received $129.16 from Christopher Ball, adm. of Levi Ball's Estate. Since Elizabeth did not receive the distribution, I "assume" she had died by 1809. According to Worcester Co. Orphans Court Records Vol. 3 1816-1823, Ralph Richardson and David K. Baker were Test. for the balance due Luther and Adelia Ball from their father John Ball's Estate. I sent to Wash. DC many times for something on Seger Ball (spelled many ways) but have received nothing. No one seems to know anything about him. I would like to know where Nottingham got Seger's name. I have posted and posted for info on Seger but have never received a response. Somebody must know something. Sorry for my rambling. 1. Re: [LDR] Levi Ball
    2. Not necessarily - they could have been his brothers. Do you have a distribution? Was any of this in the Orphans Court records? Heirs at law could even have been cousins, for all we can tell without some more information. This Elizabeth who married Mills and then Levi may even have been the Elizabeth Richardson (or not). What I would do if I were you, would be to storm the Archives and refuse to leave without the entire probate file for Levi, not just the bits and pieces that you seem to have (unless they don't remember where they put it). Elizabeth In a message dated 7/9/2010 9:18:39 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I know many of you have researched the Ball family. I am not attempting to conect us to Mary Ball. I'm just trying to research OUR family. There was a Levi Ball who died in 1807 in Worcester Co., MD. Does anyone have him in your line or research? Did he own land in Worcester Co.? I know that he married Elizabeth Mills, widow of Robert Mills after Aug. 1788 in Worcester Co. Please decipher this for me. Levi Ball died intestate. The settlement of his estate says: John Ball, Samuel Ball and Levi Ball gives administration to brother Christopher Ball. Elizabeth Ball, widow of Levi Ball gives administration to Christopher Ball. Administrator, Christopher Ball. Bonds, John R. Slocomb and Joseph Stevenson. JBR349. Is this saying that John, Samuel, Levi, and Christopher are children of Levi Ball who died in 1807? I'm confused because Stratton Nottingham's Soldiers and Sailors of the Eastern Shore of Va in the Rev. War states: Christopher Ball, John Ball, Samuel Ball, Levi Ball, William Ball and Elizabeth Richardson are the only heirs at law of James Ball and Seger Ball who were soldiers in the VA Continental Line in the Rev. War. I cannot find anything about Seger/Segar/Seeger, etc. Ball. I would appreciate any directions.
