Erayl said <Zadock Purnell b. abt 1760 m. Ann Selby, dau of Parker & Glyperry Selby son of Thomas Purnell & Elizabeth Marshall I can't place this Parker Selby in my Selbys . . . Parker Selby b. abt 1753, d. 1796 son of ? > I have 15 men by the name of Parker Selby in my database, only one of whom is hanging loose (but can't swear I'm correct on all the placements!) and he even has a birthdate, just no parents. 23 July 1776-25 April 1831, buried at All Hallow's Episcopal Church cemetery in Snow Hill; married (lic) Worc 19 Sep 1827 Mary Bell "Polly" (Trehearn) Atkinson. Anyone know who this one is? I think Parker Selby d. 1796 is the son of Matthew Selby. I have Parker Selby (wife Glyperry) as the son of Parker Selby d. 1773 but I'm not entirely satisfied with that placement. Parker Selby (wife Glyperry) mentioned in his will lot of land formerly sold out of a tract called Bleechinghurst by James Rownd to Ephraim Heather [1721], land that lies between tract called Yorkshire to the southern poplar by the county road near Doctor Wilson's fence being the land sold to William Morris but not yet conveyed to him. I want to know who Parker Selby, Jr. is in the following deed: On 18 November 1790 Parker Selby, Jr. sold to William Furniss of Somerset County for £422.5 part of Yorkshire lying eastward of the county road leading from Snow Hill Town to Greer's Tavern beginning at the original bounder of the tract standing on a small tongue of high lands and it also being the second bounder of Bleechinghurst, to the southernmost poplar standing by Dr. Wilson's fence at the county road, to a small gully where formerly stood a bridge, until intersecting the third line of the deed from Robert Cade to Daniel Selby; witnesses William Purnell, Phillip Quinton (Worc N:386). Paging John Lyon! More importantly, I also want to know where the tract Yorkshire is. And where was Greer's Tavern? And which direction from Snow Hill? Who is the Dr. Wilson mentioned in Selby's will and the P. Selby, Jr. deed? This William Furniss died about 1821 in Worcester County. He had married twice, first to Nancy Riggin and secondly to Nancy Dale. He had five children, Mary (m. Handy Hancock), Sarah, Elizabeth, William (m. Elizabeth Timmons) and Charlotte (m. William Blades). I have nothing on the descendants of this branch of the Furniss family. Anyone know if they moved away from Delmarva as did so many families in this time period? Well, to make sure you don't head too far down this track, the "land records" of the county (that is, the deed books) include any property conveyed in life, whether in-family or not. Many, many deeds are found by which land is either sold or granted by "deed of gift" from father to son (or daughter, or other kin). Relationships have nothing to do with presence or absence among the deeds. But yes, the deeds do not include land passed through probate actions. The problem with probate for chasing down conveyances is two-fold: (1) if the party left a will, he may not have actually named the land bequeathed except as "my dwelling plantation" or some other identifier, which is sometimes harder to unravel than we'd like, and (2) if the party died intestate (without a will), the probate court made "equitable" decisions on who got what - generally according to established rules, but the actual documentation of what went to whom does not usually survive, and has to be looked for otherwise (like later deeds which refer back to the title chain). The "land records" are just easier to deal with for title work, in that virtually everything deeded ended up immediately in the county deed books, identified by tract name, etc. By the way, the "land records" also include other sorts of property, like slaves, personal goods, livestock, etc., often as "bills of sale". And other things like bonds, powers of attorney, and all sorts of other agreements. Lambert of Isaac was apparently really named Isaac Lambert, guessing from Orphans Court. Elizabeth In a message dated 7/19/2010 8:03:51 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: The first Isaac Bowen died by 21 June 1816 when Isaac Marshall became the administrator de bonis non of Nathaniel Bowen's estate (Skinner). He was son of Nathaniel Bowen. He had one son Lambert. The second Isaac Bowen was named in the deed with the children of Elijah Bowen in 1834: "Esme P. Bowen and Mary J. Bowen his wife, Isaac Bowen, Peter bowen, Parker Bowen and Sally his wife, John F. Purnell and Eliza Purnell his wife land that Elijah devised to his wife and then to fall to his son Littleton" (the former sell to Littleton) This Isaac is not named with any wife and he is living in 1834. (JCH 1, 1834-1835 f. 0328). The third Isaac Bowen was this one: On 13 February 1832, Noah Bowen petitioned the court to divide the land left by his father Isaac Bowen. (Worcester Cty, LIB #4, Pt 2, PP1-11, 13 Feb 1832.) This Isaac Bowen was sold Goshen and Mayfields by Zipporah Williamson, widow of Stuart. She was one of the daughters of Rouse Fassitt. This Isaac Bowen is probably the Isaac Bowen with wife Augusta who makes a number of land transactions throughout the early 1800's. Isaac Bowen had a number of other children in addition to Noah. This Isaac Bowen is also the Isaac Bowen, I believe, who was a trustee of the ME Church and was part of the sale of a lot of Yorkshire to the ME Church: Dryden: 26 Aug 1803 Riley Bowen with wife Betty Bowen sold to Purnell Porter, John Scott, Edward Burbage, Jeptha Bowen, Eliza Bowen, Isaac Bowen and Samuel Porter trustees of Methodist Epis. Church 3/4 acres. 27 jan 1806 Isaac Bowen with wife August Bowen, sold to trustees of Methodist Epis. Church of America 3/4 acres now called BOWENS MEETING HOUSE LOT. Does anyone know who the father of this third Isaac Bowen was. *************************************** QUESTIONS about POSTING GUIDELINES, SUBSCRIBING or UNSUBSCRIBING? Elizabeth, would you mind typing in the exact citation for Isaac Lambert from orphans court? Thanks very much. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 12:14:43 -0000 (UTC) Subject: Re: [LDR] Three Isaac Bowens and Goshen and Mayfields Ack. stupid buttons.
