B everly, I am not sure if there is a connection here as everyone seemed to have at least 2 husbands/wives... I have a H enrietta Waller married to William Killem b. Nov 7, 1775 both from Maryland. Her parents were Esme and Sally Elzey Waller. If you think this might be your connection, please e-mail me personally. Comparisons among the colonies of the time do seem like they can be helpful in a number of ways. Of possible interest to some, David Hackett Fischer discusses how "sexual offenses" were treated in colonial Maryland and Virginia, with comparisons with New England, in his "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America." See pages 298-306. He states, "Sexual relations between men and women tended to be less strictly regulated in the Chesapeake than in Puritan New England. They were also regulated in a different way." Fischer indicates that, "[i]n Somerset County, Maryland, more than a third of all immigrant brides were pregnant before they married." Page 298. He offers evidence that "illegitimate births" in Somerset County in the 1600s were "very common," with an annual rate of 118 such births per 1000 total births in the County for the period 1688-94. Page 299. Fischer cites Sheri Keller, "Adultery and Fornication in Massachusetts and Maryland, the 1600s" (paper, Brandeis, 1987) as a source he drew on for Maryland fornication cases. Page 299. I just had to comment on the thought in this e-mail, "No deficit spending allowed." Wouldn't that be a refreshing idea for our federal and state governments today? Beverly, I have some info on these two in my KNOWLES files, but i did not research these two, so any info I have is unsubstantiated. I have that Marvel Knowles is the son of Richard J. Knowles and Prudence Marvel. The info i have has some different dates for these two, so take it all with a grain of salt. Unfortunately no info on her parents, though. I will send you a pdf of their family info to your personal address. Anne On Aug 23, 2010, at 10:26 AM, Beverly Wilson wrote: > Does anyone have any information about a Hettie B. The concern of the Somerset court was really a little less beatific: they were making sure that the county (and the taxpayers) wouldn't be stuck with a kid on the welfare rolls. They wanted someone else as designated stuckees for these little accidents. The annual county levies included all the regular costs of doing business (road building and maintenance, ditto for the courthouse and jail, etc., salaries or other specific compensations for officials, from the Justices and Clerk down to constables and ferrymen, and so forth), and episodic costs associated with whatever else came up. Among these were "objects of charity" needing county support due to.(e.g.) catastrophic illness or accident. Someone was found to take care of these parties and compensated by the court for their requirements. Some citizens, by reasons of age or infirmity, also petitioned the court to be removed from the tithables list (tax liability), and there were other petitions by slave owners that a slave was no longer useful for the same reasons and therefore did not represent a useful tithable for whom they should be charged. Annually, the total budget B was determined and a count of all remaining tithables T made. B/T established the tax liability for taxpaying citizens, each of whom was assessed for his N tithables (remaining males over 16 in household and slaves). The Court did what it had to do to keep the taxes down. Their procedures for dealing with illegitimate children was just part of this process. No deficit spending allowed. Mary Jane: Bible is not in my line, but I noticed that Shockley is in yours. My paternal grand mother was Elizabeth B. Shockley, born Dec 1864 in Milford, died after 1920 in Wilmington. Her first marriage (around 1884) was in Milford to Frank Paisley. Her second marriage (circa 1906) was to William Needham in Wilmington. William was my grand father. I think Elizabeth (whom I have a picture of, or maybe one of HER mother - it has a revenue stamp on the picture from 1863 - prior to her birth - most likely her mother?)......anyway, I think Elizabeth's father was William H. Shockley, North Street, Milford, born April 20, 1825, married 11/4/1851 to Catherine (Twigg?) in Milford...they had 4 children that I can find: George born abt 1860, Elizabeth in 1864, William J in 1867, and Jeanette in 1875)....that is about all I know other than William H was listed as a Shoemaker. If this has anything to do with your line of Shockley's from Milford, I would be extremely interested in getting some more information.....all my line of Needham's have passed way, so Ancestry is my only source of information. The normal first questions we have at these consultation sessions are "Who's the ancestor you're interested in?" and "What properties of his [patents or other records of ownership] do you know?" Even if you can't answer the second, using the database we can usually help put you in a better position to focus your research in land (and other) records. There were certainly Wallers in the area ("Salisbury") you're asking about. We can show you which Waller properties there were, by which Waller they were owned and exactly where they were. Even if you haven't connected your ancestor to his parentage, this sort of exhibition usually presents you with candidate relatives and narrows your search window. Waller genealogies should be consulted, too. The Wallers were a well-known and well-landed Somerset family from early times. In 1666 John Waller had his 300 acre WALLERS ADVENTURE laid out on the south side of Little Monie Creek. His descendants acquired many properties through patent, deed or inheritance across the generations. The bulk of these came to be in what's now northern Wicomico County (from Salisbury north and west to the State line) and the abutting parts of southern Sussex. Almost 150 old Somerset surveys mention Wallers. Though many of this total refer to Waller neighbors, the database we're using captures not only ownership but citations such as "near Waller's mill" or the like, often helping to guide research or aid in understanding. The point, though, is that the overall picture we have can trace movements of many specific Wallers though several generations. The brief consultation session gives you an opening window into all this, but it's only a part of building an overall profile of your lineage. Being armed with this data will likely lead you into using mdlandrec and plats.net (and other sources), for which the morning lectures - esp. the "Primary Land Records" session - are designed to help orient you.
