So sorry for leaving out the dates for the Col. He was born 1697 and died in 1775. A little late for the Revolutionary War to have served and I can't think of another war that someone from Worcester County would have served in. -----Original Message----- From: Frostfreedet@aol.com Sent: Monday, June 04, 2012 11:27 AM To: lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LDR] Col. To Gerry: I agree with Judy that the dates would be helpful. If you can't find the person that you are looking for in the 'regular military', I suggest that you try checking him out in the Militia records. I believe they will be found in the National Archives Records (Administration) in Wash., DC Happy hunting, Michelle ----- Original Message ----- From: <Frostfreedet@aol.com> To: <lower-delmarva-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 04, 2012 12:27 PM Subject: Re: [LDR] Col. Tom, the description of circumstances was great, but some dates would help: about when did Joseph W. Bradshaw die? When was the lawsuit filed or resolved? Are you talking about 1920s, 1870s . ? . . . and where was Gibbs living when he filed suit? Cheers, Judy Tom writes: I need some help. I am doing some research on Walter Abner Gibbs. Good Afternoon all; I need some help. I am doing some research on Walter Abner Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs owned marshland here in Dorchester County and leased marshland from my great-great grandfather Joseph W. Bradshaw. Mr. Gibbs did research on muskrats, sold them live across the country and developed and patented traps through his research here on the marsh. Mr. Gibbs is said to have lived in Holly Oak Newcastle County Delaware according to a Chancery Case that I have come across where he sued the children and grandchildren of Joseph W. Bradshaw for not renewing the lease on the marsh he originally leased from the deceased Joseph W. Bradshaw. Mr. Gibbs manufactured his traps in Chester Pennsylvania. From the land records that I have worked on, Walter A. Gibbs and his wife Sylvia had a son named William who lived in the same area as his parents to whom they sold the marshland owned here in Dorchester County. I would like to find the family of Mr. Gibbs and ask about his trap company and his work here on the marshes of Dorchester County. Thanks for any and all help. Hello, I am searching for my great great grandmother's family that lived in Accomack County, Virginia. My great great grandmother was Sarah R Allen, born 1 November 1837. She is listed in all census documents after marriage as being born in Maryland. She spent her married life in Baltimore, Maryland with my great great grandfather, John Alexander Morris. They were married 12 July 1853 in Baltimore, Maryland. I do not know Sarah's parent's names. The connection I have discovered comes from Sarah's uncles who were all Methodist Episcopal ministers. One of these uncles was a pretty well known minister of the day who was minister at the Seaman's Bethel in Baltimore. I suspect this is where John and Sarah met as John's sister was married to a ship pilot. John lived with his sister prior to marrying Sarah. This uncle was Edward Evans Allen, born 15 Aug 1804 in Accomack County, Virginia. His father was Edward Allen. His other three brothers that I know of and were all Methodist Episcopal Ministers were Thomas D Allen (1801-1835), George B Allen (1830-1881) and William Allen. One of these men could be Sarah's father or there may be a fifth brother. I do not know. It is more likely there is a fifth brother based on the documents I have. The information about Sarah's uncles was included in a letter to Sarah and John's son from a relative on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that dates to the 1920s. I have since found a biography of Edward Evans Allen in Methodist Episcopal Archives that substantiates all the information from the letter. In the letter and biography all of the brothers are mentioned with a birthplace of Accomack County and there father being Edward. I find it interesting with all the information my great grandfather gathered, he never mentions his mother's parent's names. I have looked at the 1850 census records for Sarah Allen and of course there are several in Maryland. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. George Garmer Baltimore, Maryland

Jay -- in many cases, it would probably refer to small smelting operations. "Bog iron" production was fairly common on a small scale near to where small pockets of this low grade, but usable ore was found. These kinds of operations were common well into the early to mid 19th century in DELMARVA and throughout the colonies.
