Looking for any information on my great-grandparents: Kendall Melvin Lewis was born in Vienna Maryland c.1833 and died November 28 1878. He married Rebecca Anne (or Anne Rebecca) Wallace October 28, 1851. She was born 2 February 1831 in Chestertown MD?, and died April 11, 1888. She was buried near the Fire Tower on the south side of Maryland Route 14 between East New Market and Shiloh. Re-portedly he is buried there as well. They had five children who lived to be adults: Lena Fooks Lewis (married James L. Christopher); Annie Emily Lewis (married Mitchell Reid); Edward Thrugood Lewis (married Mary H. Bennett); Daniel Jefferson Lewis (married Cora Moore) and Robert Kendall Lewis (married Annabelle Whaley Jones and later Rena H. Waters). Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Teresa, Your hunch is right, that the actual grant document must be obtained at the MD Archives. The land grant documents have not been uploaded to _www.mdlandrec.net_ (http://www.mdlandrec.net) . They were seldom recorded as deeds. I say "seldom" because while I have never seen such a record in deeds, there may be some there that I just have not seen. What others have pointed to as available on _www.plats.net_ (http://www.plats.net) are related to the first-title land grants --listings with liber:page for grant documents --listings for Certificates of Survey (some were not actually patented from the original Certificate; some may have been resurveyed and even renamed before a patent issued from the Proprietary or State) --in many cases the listing for the Certificate of Survey has a link at far right to uploaded images from original or from microfilm --- but these are copies only of the Cert of Survey, not the grant/patent issued. No images have been uploaded for earlier than the 1680s. Since as suggested above, the grant may differ in minor or very major respects from the original Certificate of Survey, you will find the grant document necessary. One reason a grant may have issued later than the Certificate's date is lack of payment of the surveyor's fee or other fees. But another reason is if an owner of a neighboring tract objected that the survey included some already-claimed land (often termed an "elder survey") which may have been surveyed already but not necessarily already granted. So in your search on plats.net, don't limit yourself to the date you have, which would deter locating a resurvey. Also be aware that the MSA has often separated the CoS document from the grant documents where a tract was surveyed (say) in Somerset County but the location of the tract was set off to Worcester County when it was created. So where there is a possibility that a land tract's geopolitical history included traveling into newly formed Counties, do a search in the known locations. And since the persons who entered the data made many typographical errors, and the CoS document may spell a tract-name or owner-name variously, try spelling variations (such as "Walter" which could be a mistaken reading of "Waller" -- and vice-versa). Thanks for John Lyon, Mike Hitch and others who have taught so well how to navigate these property records. Good hunting, Judy ******************************* Teresa writes: Per the Deed that I transcribed, this particular piece, called Parish, was 100 acres, grant date of March 2, 1730 to a Thomas Waller of Somerset County in the Province of Maryland. It also states in the Deed that this grant is found in Land Office Liber PL N 8 folio 137. I tried to enter that into the Maryland Land records and got zilch. Tried the PL 8 in the unpatented listing in Maryland Land records and still nothing. I'd like get my hands on this but I think I'm having a bad case of operator error. Or is this a case of having to go to the Maryland Archives (cringe) and gain a copy there?
Teresa, from the MdLandRec home page, go to plats.net, pick Somerset County, then Somerset Co. Land Surveys, Subdivisions & Condo Plats. Select "advanced search". Enter 1730 in the date field and Parrish in the description field and voila!! This works well for most Somerset County patents, can't speak to other counties but I assume the process works just as well. You can use a name also in the description field, whatever info you have. And if you just enter a year, you'll get a list of every one from that year and you can browse them. Happy Hunting......... Lynne Rentschler
I've been trying to work my way through the Maryland Land records online and still cannot find a particular land grant. Good luck! A few times AT the MD Archives I have not been successful finding a deed. The very helpful counter person I consulted also was not successful at first, but after playing with the numbers found the deed I was seeking. I think it all depends on the inputter who had a great new idea for entering the data. So, try the letters and numbers assoc/w the record in various permutations. I just looked through the index too, and didn't see a grant to Thomas Waller in 1730. Who was the grantor? I also looked through the Rent Rolls, and I didn't see a "Parish" listed. Roy, What you may be looking for is found at familysearch.org. Go to records for Delaware, click on Delaware Vital Records 1680-1962. Then click on bible records and finally, click on the last choice which is the "Bible records c 1680 -2000 index. This sounds like what you were describing. Dear List, When Family Search first put up their new digitzed records, the files were in a "beta" version that had quite a few glitches. That might explain finding something a while back that is now in a different place. I'm not sure if everything is straightened out, but my own problem was resolved recently after nearly a year of waiting.
