Between 1889 and 1911 twenty-one 3-masted schooner rams (or "Bethel Rams") were built in Bethel (named "Lewisville" until 1880). The history of these rams is contained in the excellent 1961 book "Sailing Rams" by James E. Marvil, M.D. Over the next year, I plan to do further research on what happened to these ships, only one of which is known to have survived. If anyone in this group is descended from a captain or crew member of a Bethel Ram and/or has any photos, stories, or other information to share, I'd appreciate your emailing me at ARHgenealogy@aol.com Many thanks! Dear List, Probably like a lot of people on the list, my software entries are getting a little long in the tooth. I check Ancestry.com periodically and recently found something useful. They now have a "U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989," "Beta" on line. This is an enormous increase in their Directory coverage and for those with urban ancestors the collection is now really useful. Although the entries, if the same for year after year, can be mind numbingly boring -- they can also provide unique insight into exactly where the subjects lived and how their occupations were characterized over the years. I haven't really challenged the collection yet, but I know its got coverage down to cities the size of Jacksonville, FL. George (et al), There are four other volumes in that set of military records of the DE Archives available online. In the link below, simply replace the "2" with a 1, 3, 4, or 5 and you will link to that volume # of the series. http://archive.org/details/delawarearchives02dela I checked them initially the same way you did: by opening in "text" format and searching with the "find" feature. I've found that during the conversion to "text" lots of words become misspelled, unfortunately, so I also downloaded the PDFs of all 5 volumes, and searched each using the PDF search feature. It's great to be able to download the actual book, because you can print out the title page + any pages of interest. Andrew In a message dated 8/13/2012 1:57:23 P.M. A large group on another mail list is tracing a cluster from 1660/80's Isle of Wight VA across several VA counties to arrive in 1740/50's Edgecombe, Granville, Halifax etc NC. Many of the families in the cluster were "on the ground", on this side of the pond before entering VA. Specifically, many come from various MD counties around the Bay. We have encountered an oddity: In 1690 an Isle of Wight VA jury hears the testimony of a John Regon who reports that Daniel Harrison and the woman Sarah that he lives with, that she has a husband in Maryland named Edward Jones. Every generation of this family has an Edward Jones, and we cannot find a Sarah. However, the family is key to the Brantley, Jones, Gant, Williams, Riggan cluster we are dragging If John is testifying, this is probably one of our Eds we have lost. It's a long shot, but has anyone seen an Edward Jones in any of the Eastern Shore loci in the 1680-1720 time period? and if so, who is he interacting with? Pat

After finally breaking through my brickwall with my Thomas Andrew and finding his father William Andrew, I am attempting to go further back. Currently I am trying to follow-up on a family story that has my Thomas Andrew as a cousin to Willis Andrew. The father of Willis Andrew is Richard Andrew (married to Delia Carroll). Richard's father is Edward Andrew, married to Prudence Walker. I'm hopeful that someone has info about Edward's parents and siblings. My hope is that one of his brother's is the father of William Andrew, the father of my Thomas Andrew. Kari Andrew Farnell researching Andrew, Lomax
Mike, I've been puzzling over your query and it finally came to me why Holly Swamp sounded so familiar. I'm thinking this property is around the Powellville area. I say this because Elisha Pennewell sold 30 acres of it to John Truitt in 1769 and the property remained in the Truitt family for several generations. A friend of mine descends from these Truitts and his greatuncle was called "Holly Swamp" because of living on that piece of land. Holly Swamp supposedly stood 6'7", which was a giant in those days.
George Actually its Holly Swamp I have an interest in. Liz mentioned Bear Swamp as a reference point in Worcester. Thanks for the input. Wendy- Yes!, that def is a possibility. Its the "only" actual named Holly Swamp in Worcester area today. Is it same as 200+ years ago??...Thanks for the link to the map, also a great tool! Liz- Thanks so much for your reply. Im just getting back into genealogy after a 5 year hiatus!!...I forget what resources are available to put 2 + 2 together!...I know the Browns, who Marshall Smith sold Garding Spot to in 1780, were mostly located outside of Salisbury, going towards Snow Hill. The Pennewells were also my ancestors. They had a small branch near Berlin, but mostly, they were in the Powellville/Snow Hill area. Your input gives me a starting point. Thanks again! Dear Mike and Liz, I noticed that you may be interested in locating a Bear Swamp. In my research for my Dill ancestors I have noticed that they used that name for their property which was just east of Greensboro, MD near Whiteleysburg, MD in Caroline Co. I do not have that reference handy at this moment but I think that I can find it if it would be useful to you. My Dill ancestors settled here in 1702. With love in Christ, George D. Just chesking - Am I still a member of Rootsweb group?
One description in plats.net said it belonged to Elisha Pennewell. It was located west of Bear Swamp. Also, it was west of the Pocomoke River, so it's now in another county. Elisha Penewell also comes up in plats.netunder Wicomico County, too, but there weren't any scans, and not Holly Swamp, either. Southeast of Salisbury, Maryland, there is a Bear Swamp Road, going from near the airport, running east. Johnson Road coming from the southeast side of Salisbury soon becomes Bear Swamp Road, meandering generally east through mostly unpopulated country, and ends at Rt. 554 south of Powelville.
